Type 1 diabetes insulin

Common Questions and Answers about Type 1 diabetes insulin

diabetes

Avatar n tn I know I am insulin dependent because I cannot take my pump off except for the rare few minutes or so without my sugar sky rocketing. Now would u still call this Type 2 Diabetes or Type 1? Hearing the words Juvenile Diabetes associated with Type 1 throws me off obviously because I was not diagnosed as a juvenile. But also the words Insulin Dependent are associated with the Type 1. So I DO fit into that category.
Avatar f tn I recently was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, will I ever be able to eat whatever I want again? If so, how long do you think that will be, I miss my chocolate!!

Avatar n tn Hi Dalki, Yes, in time your doctor will likely know for sure which type of diabetes you have. In addition to Type 1 and Type 2, there seems to be a type 1.5 ... tho' there's some thought that 1.5s are just in the early stages of Type 1. We DMers (folks with diabetes mellitis) and our docs often call that a honeymoon phase. I hope you're feeling better now that your bloodsugar has begun to come down. Things may remain volatile for a while, so try to be patient with yourself.
Avatar n tn My godchild is Type 1 Diabetic she is 5 years old and she is on humalog and protafyn. Her sugar spikes a lot then it is high in the 20 reading and then she is low. What is the cause of the spiking. She does not take any sugar onl 1 canderel tablet.
Avatar f tn My daughter was diagnosised with Type 1 Diabetes Aug 2008. We have learned how to inject insulin and check her blood sugar numbers. We keep her on a pretty strick diet to ensure that we keep her Blood Sugar Numbers between 80-180. The past two days she has been very low. We have tried to make sure that the insulin that we give her is only enough to cover the food that she has eaten. However, just today, she woke up with her blood sugar #s at 64. She ate about 32 carbs for breakfast.
Avatar n tn I also noted the JAMA reminder/caution that food does not cause Type 1 diabetes. Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease. This study and others looked at the impact of specific foods/timing of introduction in at-risk children. Please know that Type 2 is a completely different disease than Type 1. Type 1 is autoimmune, and researchers are striving to find out what triggers (or doesn't) trigger the disease. Type 2 has completely different origins.
Avatar m tn YA SHE IS ON INSULIN SHE TAKES TOO MUCH Care of herself but doesnt knw why she gets tht mch pain???
Avatar n tn My 20 year old son has recently been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. He had trouble controlling it for about 6 months-- up to 500, etc. He is extremely responsible and tests often and takes 4 insulin shots a day. Here is the question: He has had a spinal fusion due to very severe scoliosis. He is a chef on a cruise ship and stands for 12 hours at a time. About a month ago he started taking vicodin for back pain.
Avatar n tn I understand that people with uncontrolled or long standing type 2 diabetes can progress to "type 1" diabetes where the pancreas can no longer make insulin or no longer make enough insulin (even with drug support to increase insulin production / increase tissue sensitivity to insulin).
Avatar n tn I have a friend whose husband has type-1 diabetes. He is in his early thirties and had a job for 3 years in which he had to drive around town. His blood sugar dropped one day when he was off work and he had an accident and lost his drivers license.
Avatar m tn Vitiligo is unlikely to be cause by insulin but could be related to type 1 diabetes, both being autoimmune in nature. I would suggest consulting a dermatologist for suggesting an appropriate management plan. Hope this information is helpful. Take care!
Avatar f tn You don't say what you were using before Lantus. If the change has resulted in better control of your blood sugars, that could be why you are gaining weight. (Assuming, of course, you haven't increased food or decreased exercise). Unfortunately, some type 1's do develop insulin resistance after many years especially if during that time you ate carbs pretty freely and bolused for it. Insulin resistance leads to weight gain.
1411765 tn?1281652371 There is a substantial number of adults who are misdiagnosed Type 2 who are in fact Type 1 or LADA which is a slow onset type 1. Some of the indications that this might be the case would be a person who was put on oral meds and they did nothing or they worked for awhile (months to a couple years) then stopped working, necessitating insulin use.
Avatar n tn I am the mother of a newly diagnosed (1 week ago) 17 year old son with type 1 diabetes. He is a distance runner in school both cross country(5K) and 1600 m in track and field. We need some suggestion on how to procede with training; ie, eating before and after practice and actual meets, will he need to inject insulin before a meet? Any information will be helpful. Thanks!
Avatar n tn Congratulations!!! I too am a type 1 diabetic and my son just turned 1 last month. I had a pretty healthy pregnancy but it was very hard work. As the person above told you call your doc immediately and ask for a Rx for prenatal vitamins. Also, one of the most important nutrients for your baby is folic acid or folate. This is especially important for diabetics!!! The best sources are spinach (I know yuck...
Avatar f tn Hello im 13 years old and i have type one diabetes and normally if i want to do exercise to help regulate my blood sugar i go jogging or biking but just make sure you dont overdo it because it may result in low blood sugar.
Avatar m tn I am 21 years old, had a had a baby a year ago and was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes almost 1 month and a half ago. And I have definitely noticed a significant amount of weight gain. I am still trying to get a handle on my diabetes. I am using FlexPen and take 2 shots of 24 units a day. I am starting to get depressed by all the weight gain and even just the daily fight with my Blood Glucose.
Avatar n tn My 15 year-old daughter was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes at the age of 12. She currently wears an insulin pump. The last 2 months she has experienced very high blood sugars (300-600) around the time of her period. The blood sugars remain high for approx. 48 hours despite our best efforts (insulin every 2-3 hours and lots of water) to bring them down. After a couple of days she is back in the normal range. The pump is working fine and she has not had ketones either time as well.
996946 tn?1503249112 In Type 1, the pancreas is still working. The small part of it that produces insulin gets destroyed by the immune system, but the rest is untouched.
Avatar f tn Also you need to be careful with portion control even for the whole grain carbs - probably limiting 1/2 - 1 cup of these / meal. 4. Instead you should focus on eating plenty of non-starchy veges, lean proteins, nuts, non-sweetened dairy. Avoid tropical fruits and grapes (which are very sweet), and instead eat fruits like apples, pear, and berries. Limit the portions of fruit. 5. Always make sure you eat fat and protein with each meal as this will slow down the carbs being absorbed.
