Avatar f tn I have type 1 diabetes, and have had this challenging disease for 30 years. I am believing that I may be having the first signs of some nerve damage and am wondering what doctors/specialists I sure see. Right now I have a family practioner, and have had this same doctor for years....any suggestions on where to go next? I have excellent insurance (not always the case) and want to take care of this before the situation gets worse? Help.
Avatar n tn My daughter has had type 1 diabetes for over 20 years and has diabetic retinopathy. After a series of bleeds and resulting laser surgery, she suffered a detached retina in one eye and underwent a total vitrectomy. Three days later, she could see nothing - the result, probably of an infection. She was treated with antibiotics and steroids, but her sight never fully recovered and now a fluorogram confirms that she has lost blood supply to approximately 25% of the retina.
Avatar n tn that specializes in high risk pregnancies. I have type 1 diabetes and have had 4 healthy pregnancies that all ended up with healthy children. The relationship with my Dr was very close and I felt very comfortable asking him anything. Did your doc tell you anything else like if there was something you could do to prevent it? Have you thought about a second opinion? I know it is scary but you are your best advocate! Do some research, talk with your Dr and get a second opinion!

Avatar n tn I would have been surprised if it were diabetic retinopathy since I have only been diagnosed with type one diabetes since 2006. It was strange because I was 55. I presented at the hospital with classic signs, no history of diabetes in the family and no problems with weight. The c petide test clinched it. I was told that as long as a followed the three musts, insulin, diet and exercise, I should not have any problems for years as long as I control my sugars which I have done.
Avatar n tn I would recommend that you connect up with your local chapter of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) who sponsors this forum. JDRF was founded by parents of Type 1 and is aimed at finding a cure for diabetes & its complications. ALong the way, they are an enormous support network for newly diagnosed, or newly-scared and stressed folks with diabetes.
Avatar n tn Is there a cure for retinopathy? I have type 2 diabetes and was diagnosed with retinopathy with follow up test, the doctor said it was not getting any worst. I watch my diet and excercise. On some test it don,t show up. Does this mean I do not have, and I rid of it.
Avatar n tn I know too much about diabetes and its complications, that made things even worse. I just searched and searched the journals about type 1 diabetes and got scared by the poor prognosis. I'm a christian and I just can't understand why god gave me such a disease, I blamed god for that. Type 1 DM is very rare in Chinese, the incidence is around 0.14/100000 per year. Why am I so unfortunate?
Avatar m tn Hello, the nurse is wrong! In order to control your diabetes you need to know what your blood sugar is doing. So you need to buy a meter and test strips. there are cheaper brands. Then you test your fasting (ideally it is < 95), and you test 1 1/2 to 2 hrs after eating and ideally it is < 140, or even better < 120.

Avatar n tn I have gone to 3 different opthomologists for my floaters and all have said that my vision is fine and that they are normal. I have type II diabetes. They have all said that I don't have glaucoma or any signs of diabetic retinopathy. I am 33 years old. This last episode of "seeing stars" has concerned me, though. In October of 2007, I had what my opthomologist called an "optic migraine" but haven't had one since.
Avatar n tn I am not a physician, but a mom of a child with type 1 diabetes, and the daughter of someone with type 2 diabetes. I can tell you from experience that people with diabetes, whether type 1 or type 2, usually heal a lot slower that a person with out diabetes. It took my mom over 2 years to have a wound heal because her diabetes was not under tight control. My daughter, who is on the pump and in good control, takes a longer to heal than her friends.
