636562 tn?1223667445 Chlorpheniramine maleate and hydrocodone bitartrate are used together in an oral preparation to relieve coughing and upper respiratory symptoms associated with allergic rhinitis or the common cold. Hydrocodone release from the Tussionex® oral suspension is controlled by the Pennkinetic® system. Chlorpheniramine release from Tussionex® is prolonged by use of an ion-exchange polymer system. Chlorpheniramine is well absorbed from the GI tract.
Avatar n tn This cough syrup combines an anti-histamine (chlorpheniramine) with a codeine-like cough suppressant called hydrocodone. Tussionex stops coughing well, but it carries a risk of potential side effects, including drowsiness, constipation, lightheadedness, and vomiting. The hydrocodone component is also an addictive medication and should be used with caution.
Avatar m tn Each teaspoonful (5 mL) of TUSSIONEX (hydrocodone and chlorpheniramine) Pennkinetic Extended-Release Suspension contains hydrocodone polistirex equivalent to 10 mg of hydrocodone bitartrate and chlorpheniramine polistirex equivalent to 8 mg of chlorpheniramine maleate. TUSSIONEX (hydrocodone and chlorpheniramine) Pennkinetic Extended- Release Suspension provides up to 12-hour relief per dose. Hydrocodone is a centrally-acting narcotic antitussive. Chlorpheniramine is an antihistamine.
Avatar n tn For OTC cough syrup, I use Delsym (Dextromethorphan polistirex) or Mucinex (Guaifenesin). I've never had a problem with either, and I'd consider myself fairly sensitive to cold medications. When I need the big guns, I get my PCP to prescribe Tussionex (chlorpheniramine and hydrocodone) aka. "Liquid Gold". I love this stuff. It's expensive, hence the name. But you WILL stop coughing, and you WILL sleep!
Avatar m tn Well, tussionex is part hydrocodone which is a semi-synthetic opioid and part chlorpheniramine which is a type of antihistamine. So some people can be more sensitive to the hydrocodone (vicadin) part of the cough syrup. It is a fairly addictive drug and some people have genetics (an enzyme called cpy 2d6) that increases the duration the hydrocodone is elevated in their blood. This leads to exaggerated effects or feeling of euphora and other symptoms.
Avatar n tn Had all the allergy shots available on the planet (allergies to dust/dust mites) and today, I read about Tussionex. I control my blood pressure very well with Adalat once a day. I'll be seeing my GP on April 8. I pray that Tussionex (taken only 8 hours or 12 hours prior to my show/s as opposed to taking the narcotic regularly - that's scary) would be permissible for me even when taking Adalat.
Avatar f tn Your body is known to hypersensitive to quinolones to which levaquin belongs to. Tussionex contains hydrocodone which may also be responsible. But it is difficult to tell, which one is the offending drug. The spectrum of these reactions can vary widely; reactions may present as typical allergic symptoms (eg, itching, urticaria, rash, edema) after a single dose, or may manifest as breathlessness due to bronchospasm.
Avatar n tn After having an endoscopy and going to several gastroenterologist and ENT specialists I found that the only drug that helps is Tussionex which is a narcotic that combines Hydrocodone and Chlorpheniramine. The problem is ofcourse that no doctor will give that on a daily bases for the rest of my life. If anybody know about any other any other non addicting drugs that may be related or not to Hydro that would give the same relief?
1003776 tn?1360197582 I have struggled with addiction for 10 years now and it all started with Tussionex. I had a really bad case of bronchitis and it was prescribed, THEN I got bronchitis all over again but this time it was worse, so it was prescribed again. After that, it was on!! I was Dr. Shopping for tussionex. I tried the methadone but coming off of the methadone is hard as hell too. I think Suboxone is the best. That is when Ive had my longest sobriety is when I was on Suboxone.
Avatar n tn sober 20+ years in 12 step program. Take Tussionex for chronic cough, 1 tsp. per day. I don't abuse it by taking more. But, if I don't take it every day I start to feel like I am getting the flu. Is that withdrawal, just the level in my blood is dropping off after 24 hours? Would appreciate anyone's input, especially if you have experience. Thanks and bless you all. One day at a time, because that's all we've got.

Avatar f tn I am hopefully going to start treatment AGAIN for tussionex withdrawal and treatment. Pray for me. Any suggestions or any other people out there like me? I am so alone.
Avatar n tn I have a bottle of Tussionex since the last time i was pretty sick. It was filled may 15 2008 and Im not sure what the expiration date is on it. would it be fine to take?
Avatar f tn Last night and today, I have relapsed yet again on Tussionex. For the past two weeks, I have felt nothing but excruciating pain in my heart from so many losses. My divorce, my ex boyfriend and my recent ex boyfriend. Then, I used last night. I took a tablespoon of the tussionex and I felt numb. I felt happy. I felt like I didn't want to kill myself. So I took two teaspoons today. The pain is still nagging at the back of my head.
Avatar f tn Both Demerol and high dose hydrocodone products like Tussionex ( a syrup with 10mgs per teaspoon) or any form with 15mgs and up are both on the verge of being in the next class of stronger opiates. Then low dose formulations of oxycodone such as Percocet where it only contains 5mgs of oxycodone and 325mgs of tylenol is often prescribed where some doctors feel that its about as potent as a higher dose of hydrocodone like Vicoprofin, tussionex, 10mg Lortabs or Norcos.
Avatar f tn However, in the US, all opiods have another type of pain med with them. For example Lortabs are hydrocodone and acetaminophen. Tylenol-3 - acetamenophin and codeine. I didn't know that opiods cause the release of histamine. No wonder I itch like crazy when I take them. I just knew that the itching was a side effect. I wonder if you could use an opiod cough med for pain? I know a lot of people use the pain meds for cough.
Avatar f tn until I was diagnosed with arthritis in my lower back - well as luck would have it I was prescribed Vicodin with has the same crap in it as the cough medicine Tussionex had. Well long story short I have finally come to my senses and gave it all up. I can do it...but man oh man this withdrawal is really terrible....

Avatar n tn ve been given every cough suppressant from tussionex to robotussin with codine, to no avail. The cough only stops for a few hours once i'm so exhausted that i fall asleep for a few hours. I've had a CT (for elevated DDimer) and a chest xray within the past week, both clean. I'm now to the point where my normal breaths wheeze on the way in and out, and even if i try to breath through my nose, i still make wheezing. I'm clear so far as pertussis.
Avatar f tn ive been presribed vicodin and tussionex alot lately? it was a miracle i got pregnant, because of my past with cervical cancer surgerys i have an incompitent cervix.in less than 5 days they are taking my cervical cerclage out and i may go into labor. will the hydrocodone be in the babys system and can they take my baby if it was prescribed?
Avatar m tn Thank you for your reply. I have an appt. next week with the gastroenterologists to explore the reflux issue. I think it could be more sinus related but I really don't know right now I take both zyrtec and singulair in the evening. I think I will also try the Mucinex to see if that helps. I do get some relief from taking Tussionex cough syrup. Kind of strange but opiates tend to thin the mucus production and it seems to numb my throat where I don't feel the PND or whatever it might be.
Avatar n tn If you prove not to have asthma, aren’t smoking and didn’t have whooping cough, you should contact your doctor and request a prescription for a strong cough suppressant You could try an over-the-counter cough suppressant with “DM” and if that doesn’t provide relief of the cough, then call or visit your doctor to make sure that nothing more serious is causing your cough (you may need a chest X-ray to do that) and get a stronger cough preparation such as Tussionex.
10444775 tn?1410183637 Hi, I read a lot of your posts on here and I understand what you are feeling...I have a question that I hope someone can answer. My family doctor has been giving me hydrocodone 10mg. 1 tablet twice daily (60 monthly) for several years now. Well, about 6 weeks ago I was in a car accident and it broke my neck and crushed 2 vertebrates-which I had surgery on. And also, from the accident, I have 6 more fractures in my neck that has to heal on their on.
Avatar m tn Bad depression the kind where you need someone to sit with you for safety. Not taking hydrocodone is extremely difficult because with out it I am in 8-10 on the pain scale. I have had 6 spinal surgeries and I have no hope for any other surgery. I use meditation to get through the pain. Some days its just PAIN and nothing works. I am only66 I am wondering how hydrocodone works on my depression?
