I think Geodon is for BP patients who have equal mania and depression or more on the manic side (as opposed to Lamictal which is used for greater depressive BP). Trileptal is very similar to Tegretol - in fact, I think they are the same molecule but varied somewhat. I've read a statement from a Psychiatrist that Tegretol is always more successful for them than Trileptal is. Go to Bipolarworld - the Dr. in charge of that wrote a abstract of his experience using Tegretol vs Trileptal for BP.

Trileptal and Seroquel but they are not working. I am taking myself of the trileptal now. i am off the seroquel completely now. Like you said I have grown immune to them. I have an appt to see my psych doc soon. I had printed out a list of meds so hopefully we are able to get the right ones.

I talked this with my social worker but because of the severity of my mania I think she wants me to be on a higher dosage or atleast a different kind. I tried to tell my psych doc (I probably didnt explain it very well) she just lowered my dosage. I am just, I dont know. I want to be able to be aware just in case anything was to happen to my family or if I need to be on the move if i need to escape or anything. (fire, breakin, etc.) Can anyone offer any advice or ever felt this way?

I am manic and am starting trileptal tomorrow. I know it will take weeks to work. What do i for with my manic self in the mean time? Should i go to a crisis center or just ride it out?

s common or uncommon but its not rare. Trileptal is similar clinically but better in one way in that the blood test is not required. I found that lithium worked well but had some trouble tolerating it for other reasons that were physical but did very well on Lamictal especially on rapid cycling. Each person reacts diffferently though. Speak to your psychiatrist about what is going on and if other options might be considered.

But after the common ones proved intolerable Keppra caused suicidal ideations. Trileptal caused an agitated mixed state. Now at this point in time having run out of options I could see a mood disorders specialist (which was suggsted in the past) but I've been through their lists of what they've used and have been on what's available. But as for those of you who know me there is an over riding physical disability which is advanced tardive dyskinesia.

I have more depression than mania. I was on Depakote 1000 mg a day . I felt pretty good but gained so much weight , which caused me to have prediabetes .I was changed to Lamictal which caused huge allergic reactions ! I just started Trileptal 300 mg twice a day. It's causing anxiety , but I also take Ativan . I seem to have more energy . Has anyone gained weight on this , and how does it work on the depression side of Bipolar 2 ?

I know lamictal has very low side effects for me, but I need something in addition for mania. I use Abilify which is supposed to be weight neutral, but I gained 35 lbs when I first took it. Now I have a solution to prevent weight gain no matter what I am on. I am on a grain- free diet and I rarely get hunger pangs. If I do, it is because I am truly hungry and need to eat. I have to try to eat enough calories in a day. Give it a try.

This sounds like a bad plan. If you truly cannot stand tegretol, but you've been having mood episodes (especially manic ones), you need to start a different mood stabilizer, preferably before or while stopping the tegretol. And are you having major side effects, or are you just upset that you're still getting depressed? Major and/or intolerable side effects are the only good reason to quit fast. If it's not working well enough, a dose increase or adding something else could work.

t confuse that for Lamictal worsening mania. If at a full dose the mania starts to get worse speak to your psychiatrist about it then. Remember Lamictal is a first line FDA approved mood stabilizer. If the potential of worsening mania at a higher dose were that much of concern it wouldn't have gotten through the studies and been approved for this purpose. Relax and give it some time....

Yes right now I am taking lithium and trileptal. I was on lamictal and trileptal but had to switch to lithium as my insurance allowance for medication has run out and lamictal and trileptal costs about $500.00 per month. Befor the month is out I'll have to go to lithium and depakote until I can figure something else out.

I was on oxcarbazine for eight years. It's a really good drug. It's stabilizes mania. I just went off it in favor of topomax but I would recommend it-I had no side effects.

Ok its going on 3 weeks now, done the seroquel thing, now I am on the generic for Trileptal-oxcarbazepine. Not feeling this either....I am so angry at the moment and EVERY things getting on my nerves....not to mention I was taking Chantix to quit smoking...then I found out that it contributes to mood swings and anger issues.....so I stop taking it...but it's not helping.... my question is why am I taking something for epilepsy.... I am ANGRY, i'm not having seizures....

CrazyMeds suggests Trileptal as a better choice, but this is an off-label use of Trileptal). Seroquel is an atypical antipsychotic. If weight gain worries you, Geodon is an atypical antipsychotic that is supposed to be weight neutral. Abilify is a third-generation antipsychotic, and also used a fair amount.

I take 40mg of fluoxetine/Prozac and being an antidepressant I hear it makes mania in bipolar disorder much worse. I am currently being assessed for bipolar disorder but after starting on the antidepressant for a few months now I haven't noticed a significant change in mania symptoms whilst taking it compared to when I took no medication. Is it possible to have bipolar but not having worsened symptoms due to antidepressants?

So I have been diagnosed by two different psychiatrists the first said bipolar II the second cyclomania. Also been diagnosed with ADHD but cannot take meds for it because of bipolar. Or maybe I am just bipolar and was misdiagnosed...anyways I have irritability, anger, mild depression, hypomania, am very figity, have sleeping problems...

Yes I took Trileptal (the brand name of what you are taking) years ago. It didn't work out for me but not for the reasons you said. Some people have found it tolerable and effective. It is clinically related to Tegretol which requires regular bloodtests to monitor for loss of white blood cells (which does not often occur but still must be tested for). It rarely happens with Trileptal, unlike Tegretol but it can on occasion.

Mood stabilizers vary in effectiveness on both mania and depression. Lamictal from what I believe is better on depression than mania. Depakoate is better on depression. Lamictal in high doses can enduce mania as it did in me so it had to be discontinued by my psychiatrist. However, that was over time. Generally I found it safe and effective. Tegretol is hardly used in the United States anymore due to drug interactions.

am BP II.....was afraid of hypo mania and went to my pdoc 20 days ago.....he raised my lamictal to 200 mg and put me on trileptal 150 mg........after 17 days my mood curve started to go down and i felt depression creeping and tried to fight it back but it defeated me two days now,today am kind of dead,,,,,,,,closing on my self do not leave bed only for bathroom.my social life is vanished,i cannot explain it to people coz they wont understand it and i do not like their sympathy..................

Due to the severe burning sensation I have in my hands from my current MS flare up, my neuro has put me on Trileptal. I have read great things about this med in regards to TN but not much about peripheral nerves. Anyone have any experience with this med for burning sensation NOT on the face? Hope you all are well!!

The pain was an 11 on the 0-10 scale. Since the pain has only calmed down to a 7, my neuro added trileptal with the neurontin. The trileptal is being titrated and I'm at 750 mgs per day right now. Can anyone tell me at what dose of trileptal you got some relief from the constant crawling, burning, crushing type pains? Also does the side effect of nausea and just feeling crappy all over from trileptal eventually subside. I also have MS. Thank you.
