Trileptal for mood stabilization

Common Questions and Answers about Trileptal for mood stabilization

trileptal

Avatar n tn Trileptal is gradually replacing Tegretol which is less in use now as Trileptal is much safer but has the same effect on mood stabilization. You should ask your psychiatrist about that. If you have any more questions about benefits issues ask me as I volunteer and do advocacy in that area. I'm sure there's a way you can find coverage. And if you are unable to work because of your disability apply for SSI/SSDI now not later so you can be eligible.
574118 tn?1305135284 It depends on the specific person but Seroquel does have strong mood stabilization effects. It was complex for myself as a person with schizoaffective disorder or people I knew with bipolar with psychotic features as there a mood stabilizer and an antipsychotic was neccessary. With straight bipolar Seroquel being an FDA approved mood stabilizer should work at a therapeutic dose. You can see if at a proper dose you can tolerate the akathesia.
Avatar f tn Any recommendations for a good mood stablizer other than Lithium, Lamictal or Depakote, or are those the only mood stabilizers there are? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
585414 tn?1288941302 Its important that when people run out of standard mood stabilizers that some of the remaining choices do have potential side effects of concern, especially personality alterations. That's why some of them aren't often used. I've been through every mood stabilizer. Could detail but it would go on for pages. But after the common ones proved intolerable Keppra caused suicidal ideations. Trileptal caused an agitated mixed state.
Avatar f tn It may affect you less but you need full mood stabilization not just control of depression to fully recover. As I said you might ask for a consult to a mood disorders specialist and then your psychiatrist could follow up on what was reccomended.
Avatar f tn Except for Lithium, which is highly effective but an old line medication that will cause weight gain and cognitive confusion and if taken over time a potential for kidney damage (has happenned to 5 people I know) all the mood stabilizers were other medications first, usually anti-convulsants, then used experimentally for mood stabilization.
1108262 tn?1273179266 DOES ANY ONE TAKE TRILEPTAL FOR BIPOLAR ??? IF SO HOW MUCH AND FOR HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN TAKING IT??
585414 tn?1288941302 I can honestly say I feel a bit crabby but if that worsens into any personality alteration then I will have to change it but one cannot tell with any medication from the first day. I have a follow up appointment with my psychiatrist as I do notice some mood stabilization (in a good sense) and since its a brand new medication he should be the one to note that. As well I'll have a follow up with my neurologist who prescribed it of course.
Avatar n tn Abilify is specifically FDA approved for both mood disorders and psychotic disorders. If a person has a mood disorder that would have any type of psychosis as part of it they would most likely need an antipsychotic. Otherwise there are a wide variety of mood stabilizers although only a psychiatrist would understand the clinical specifics.
1100992 tn?1262357216 if you compare tegretol with depakote or lithium the 3 most famous classical old drugs for BP and mainly for mania then tegretol is the least harmful and this i read everywhere. So if you consider an MS then tegretol is your best bet. Sure you will need from time to time to do some blood tests (not with trileptal) but at least it won't make you put excessive weight or hair loss like depakote or the other known side effects like lithium BTW egyptian doctors write it all the time.
Avatar f tn We have some helpful websites linked up on the welcome page that have detailed information about mood stabilization and mood disorders in general and you might want to look them over and then discuss the information with your psychiatrist and besides every day coping solutions if things aren't working out you could speak to them about available options as regards medications.
1255505 tn?1272819115 They are finding that the anti-convulsant used for my physical disability is showing mood stabilization properties and they may potentially document that. The connection between mood stabilizers and anti-convulsants is known but there hasn't been specific research that was able to prove why but of course manic episodes and seizures both involve over activity in the brain. There are other medications that are used off label for mood stabilizers besides anti-convulsants with varying results.
Avatar f tn I think Geodon is for BP patients who have equal mania and depression or more on the manic side (as opposed to Lamictal which is used for greater depressive BP). Trileptal is very similar to Tegretol - in fact, I think they are the same molecule but varied somewhat. I've read a statement from a Psychiatrist that Tegretol is always more successful for them than Trileptal is. Go to Bipolarworld - the Dr. in charge of that wrote a abstract of his experience using Tegretol vs Trileptal for BP.
Avatar f tn ve been taking Trileptal 300mg and Lexapro 10mg for over six years now and I did well for a while but about seven months ago started loosing my grip on the situation again. Please reply!
Avatar m tn Which mood stabilizers don't require monthly blood testing? Which of these is best to use?
Avatar f tn in 2000 i was diagonosed with biopolor disorder i had my assorment of drug theropy i ended with a cocktale of trileptal, trazadone and lexapro when i found out i was pregnat in 2004. They took me off all my meds and have been med free until about 6 months ago when i went completely off the wall...They then put me on lexapro and ativan.. I went to a psychiotrist 3 weeks ago who took me off both of those meds and put me on Seroquel 150mg and trileptal 1200mg.
1212999 tn?1272305203 I've been taking these two for 2 months. 1800 mg trileptal 10 mg abilify. i'm doing a lot better (rages getting under control, manic moods lowered) but i'm still so depressed. my irritability is still off the charts. do you think adding another med will be the most likely next step or will my doc just keep raising my dosages?
397118 tn?1219762250 HI EVERYONE I WAS WONDERING IF ANY BODY CAN HELP ME WITH QUESTIONS ON TRILEPTAL, I BEEN REALLY TIRED AND I WANTED TO KNOW IF YOU GUYS KNOW IF HAS ANYTHING TO DO WITH TRILEPTAL?
Avatar f tn I take Tegretol but not specifically for mood stabalising even though it does seem to help/assist the other med's I take. I take Tegretol for "Palinopsia" which is apparently a mixture between epilepsy and migraines. Tegretol was originally designed as an anti-convulsant/anti-epileptic but had been found to have mood stabilizing features as well.
574118 tn?1305135284 Things like topiramate (brand Topamax) and oxcarbazepine (brand Trileptal) are off-label, but the anticonvulsants in general are known for mood stabilization properties (oxcarbazepine is very similar to carbemazepine, but with fewer side effects, and a lack of license might be a monetary thing, not a clinical one).
574118 tn?1305135284 People some time mean AC as MS yet they are meant usually for epileptic i.e. used for BP off-label (e.g lamictal). Whereas AP for schizophrenia mainly also for BP off-label so usually used for BP in psychosis. The only MS i know of in books is the lithium. So why people can't be more clear saying instead of you should use an MS just say you should consider lithium. Some articles (medical) say there is no agreement on the meaning of an MS.
915369 tn?1355314810 Yes it still can be difficult for me as the main mood stabilizer I take Clonidine is in patch form so by the last day it runs out and there is some hypomania but that new anti-convulsant I am taking for dystonic spasms has been noted as having mood stabilization effects in me so now its far less of a problem as that is taken daily like all medications. However, before that I would have to talk myself down.
1029865 tn?1252418538 I'm on 2mg of Klonopin a day, but I use it as an anti-anxiety. Before I was diagnosed with BP, and was only taking that medication, it had very negative effects. Combined with actual mood stabilizers though, it works great.
Avatar m tn I know a few people who have been classified as that and its a hard one as nothing works for them, they go through hell although one of them found CBT helped her control her mood states with some work.
Avatar f tn From what I am aware of benzodiazepines only have a mild mood stabilization effect (I have had them prescribed for anxiety issues but they never had a full mood stabilization effect) and lithium is a first line mood stabilizer and generally would be the one choice used before the other but you could speak to your psychiatrist about this.
925572 tn?1246540031 Trileptal is clinically similar to Tegretol but because of the way it was updated its safer and doesn't require bloodwork. For some people its a good mood stabilizer. It depends. My experience wasn't favorable but I know for some people I know it was and it would work as an adjunct to Lamictal. The side effect profile is reasonably similar to Tegretol and its effectiveness about the same. You could look it up more on the websites we have linked up or the medication website itself.
