Common Questions and Answers about Trileptal and trigeminal neuralgia

trileptal

738075 tn?1330575844 Hi again, my dear. I should have looked to see that you lived in Santa Cruz. Sorry 'bout that. You're pretty! And thin! And look like a fun person. So sorry this trigeminal *&@^()# is in you picture at the moment. I have had it - but for very short bouts. And long periods in between. Hope you get some relief soon. And don't get it again- EVER!! Has anyone had "chopsticks being jabbed into their eardrums" type of pain from this?
Avatar n tn I have been diagnosed with trigeminal neuralgia. When I first started taking trileptal the pain completely went away and I was sure I was cured. But only within three weeks I was woken up with the same pain again, though not as severe as before. The pain has made all my top left teeth extremely sensitive which is normal with the condition but now, the left side of my palate is also swollen. I am not sure if this has anything to do with the neuralgia or not.
Avatar f tn One of the causes of Trigeminal Neuralgia could be tumors. The Trigeminal nerve and its branches touches many parts of the face including the sinuses. (Google Gray's Anatomy (bartleby.com) for good diagrams of where the Trigeminal Nerve is). I personally have not heard that TN loosens teeth -- although pain in the teeth and gums (because of all the areas the nerve touches) is common.
Avatar f tn My sister in law is diagnosed with trigeminal neuralgia ... she is currently on Pregalin 75 for 6 weeks ???
2047903 tn?1330187549 My neuro ordered the typical blood tests for the disorders that mimic MS: lupus, Lyme's, B12, sarcoidosis etc. All have come back negative. So I guess the UBOs in my periventricular and deep white matter, subcortical, as well as the brainstem and cerebellum are a mystery. Today is the day I " up" my dose of Trileptal to get relief from this trigeminal neuralgia. Looks like a groggy weekend is ahead!I just wish I had some closure on what is going on right now.
Avatar f tn I have typical Trigeminal Neuralgia and had a Gamma Knife treatment 6 months ago. I was told to begin weaning off my medication (Trileptal). Since reducing the medication by 150 mg, I am once again experiencing TN pain triggered by chewing, talking, washing my face, etc. Is this normal when weaning off anti-seizure medications used for TN?
Avatar f tn I am currently getting many other treatments for my migraines which work fairly well. And currently my trigeminal neuralgia is down to a dull roar, but it was at pain levels of 10 at times. I took Trileptal which gave me the worst migraines that I have had. Had to stop it, but it took care of the terrible mouth pain. What about you?
Avatar f tn i believe that i have trigeminal neuralgia but i do not know what tests are done to confrim this . can you tell me what tests have to be done so i can ask my physician to ruin these tests or demand they run them ? i have been so sick for so long . i literally have been to 25 -30 doctors to find out what is wrong with me . and every test comes back negative except that a test came back positve for fungal aspergillosis .but they do not say anything about treating it .
Avatar f tn Which medication are you on? All of the anticonvulsants can cause side effects, but some people report they get used to the drugs after a few weeks. Be aware that the drugs used to treat TN can cause depression -- as if dealing with the diagnosis isn't depressing enough! They can also make you drowsy. My doctor suggested I take a NoDoz with the daytime doses. But talk to your doctor, because caffeine can be a trigger for some people. People describe a "brain fog" feeling.
Avatar m tn Hi, Thank you for your question. Trigeminal neuralgia may have a triggering factor like recent history of tooth extraction, touch, cold breeze or hot sensation etc. which you need to evaluate and avoid. Drug of choice for trigeminal neuralgia is carbamazepine but as the dose may vary according to severity therefore I would advice an oral medicine specialist consultation or at least a physician to confirm this diagnosis and get you treated accordingly.
2047903 tn?1330187549 I called my current neuro to see if it was a side effect/reaction to Trileptal which I take for trigeminal neuralgia. I finally got a call back from him 3 days later. He says it could or could not be related to the medicine, but basically said to deal with it because the medicine seems to be helping some. My MRI showed lesions and the report states the lesions are consistent with MS. I have symptoms but they are subtle (except for the trigeminal neuralgia...that is far from subtle!
233622 tn?1279334905 I TOOK MY MEDICATION FOR TRIGEMINAL NEURALGIA AND I AM ACTUALLY GETTING SOME RELIEF! I AM SO AMAZED,, AND HAPPY!! I WAS TOLD IF IT IS TRULY TN THAT I HAVE THE MEDICATION WOULD WORK QUICKLY. I GUESS THAT IS ONE MORE QUESTION I CAN MARK OFF OF MY LIST! AND I WAS SUCH A CHICKEN THINKING ABOUT TAKING THIS MEDICATION..............
Avatar m tn I am a sax, flute, clarinet player with Trigeminal Neuralgia. Very annoing to have daily pain when practicing my proffesion. Have been taking Carbamezapine and lately Gabapentine, which both cause Erectile Disfunction. Have read that Oxcarbazepine does not have this side effect. Have not convinced my neurologist to let me switch meds. What success have people had using Oxcarbazepine for TN, and does it also cause ED? I don't want to use either carbamezapine or gabapentine if possible.

Avatar f tn I've had TN now for 46 years. At age 9 I was the youngest to have it, but now there are babies with it (so sad). Docs tried lots of things, and every drug. By the time I was 16 they created Tegritol (carbomezapine) . By the time I was 21 they had perfected decompression surgery, which didn't work.
645390 tn?1338555377 Usually it goes away in about 2-3 days, but not this time. I think it is trigeminal neuralgia, have had it off and on for many years, but it has taken a huge change for the worse lately. I thought it was improving, but I was wrong. It is the right side of the middle of my face, and gives off shooting pain towards the middle of my cheekbone, and then also above that going towards my eye. My skin hurts SO bad.
Avatar m tn When she was almost done with the medicine she started having facial pain on the same side of ear infection. Has had MRI and taken meds for the neuralgia to no avail. Seeing Neurologist tomorrow. My question is why did an ear infection cause this? Could it be a vascular compression problem? That would be the easiest to fix with long term results.
233622 tn?1279334905 Apparently my last neurologist over-dosed my on both Tegretol and Neurontin and I am currently being weaned off of both and they are trying small doses of Lyrica (which I had horrible side effects with after taking 5- 75mg doses...not a large amount). What I would like to know is that if I am having side effects from the Tegretol, why would they now try this Trilepital? For you it looks like the cat's meow so to speak honey!
Avatar m tn Thanks so much for your input - there is a good acupuncturists here and will pursue and not sure why my neurologists hasnt suggested the nerve block (I've seen 3 of the best in town and after 2 - 3 weeks they all seem to give up and say take the klonopin.) That just seems like a cop out.
1175164 tn?1274116632 I have had Atypical Trigeminal Neuralgia for almost four years. I also have Anesthesia Dolorosa. I was wondering what everyone's triggers are. I seem to have some that are not "textbook" like you read everywhere. For instance, I find that if I am anywhere with a lot of noise or external stimulation, I get triggered. Please share what you experience. Thanks!
Avatar m tn My wife has been taking Tegretol 200mg X 3 tines a day, this has caused her to be disorientated and nauseous & still in pain, she is trying Trileptal 300mg X 3, whilst cutting out the Tegretol. My question is how much Trileptal can she take ??????
Avatar f tn Sorry to hear you're dealing with TN pain. Have you discussed other medications with your doctor? Everyone reacts differently to the various drugs available. Maybe another drug in combination with Trileptal would control your pain. What imaging test did you have? MRI? MRA? CT? If you have a compression, is MVD surgery an option? I've heard many stories of nasal infections causing increases in pain. If you search on Grays Anatomy on bartleby.
