Common Questions and Answers about Trileptal and lithium

trileptal

Avatar m tn now the doc wants to put me back on low dose lithium along with a med to protect my kidneys and monitor them closely. i am curently on trileptal and seroquel but still have anxiety and hypomania. i don;t know what to do. has anyone had similar experiences with ect and/or with low dose lithium?
1100992 tn?1262357216 I found Lamictal the most tolerable out of the 3 and it worked specifically on rapid cycling and mixed states and could not tolerate Tegretol, Trileptal and Depakoate because of personality changes (but that's a potential side effect of all anti-convulsants used as mood stabilizers including the one I take now) but each person responds differently to each medication although generally, side effect profile aside as it is the only medication approved as a mood stabilizer before any other usa
Avatar m tn I chose to try everything else before the lithium because I was worried about lithium and the risks of toxicity. However, I do wish it had been my first choice now because the difference has been quite remarkable.
Avatar f tn If you have taken tegretol I would be interested in hearing from you about your experiences with this medication. Apparently I have become much more emotionally sensitive, and I know, much more short tempered. Has this happened to you and what did you do about it? I don't know whether it's me changing and not putting up with as much as I used and those around me can't handle it or if it's the meds. Maybe it's both - I really don't know.
222267 tn?1253302210 ve been on. Are you still taking Lithium? And if not how long were you off the Lithium? I believe Trileptal can increase the dose of Lithium in the bloodstream and if you had problems with Lithium and was taken off it perhaps it remains to some degree. Regardless, it may be none of those things but most people I know who take Trileptal don't have those kind of side effects. And it may have nothing to do with it.
Avatar f tn This is what I could find as per the interaction between Suboxone and Trileptal but all this should be discussed with your psychiatrist who could (and should be doing) a search on the physician's only database all doctors have access to.
Avatar n tn Hi! I take abilify and trileptal and have no gained weight from those two. Hope this helps! Also, Zyprexa for me was super bad on the weight thing. I gained 20 lbs! Hope this helps.
Avatar n tn what are the positive aspect of using tegetrol as opposed to Li when lithium is not longer tolerated?
Avatar n tn hey my diagnoses is bipolar depression i take 150 zoloft,50naltrexone,60mg inderol,trileptal 900,stelazine 6mg,cogentin 0.
Avatar n tn t do a blood test for Abilify for blood levels but they can with lithium. Trileptal unlike Tegretol or lithium does not generally require a blood test. Abilify is used as a mood stabilizer but its an antipsychotic as for its original use. You need to find out what his diagnosis is, how the medications were benefiting him and where the side effects might be coming from. We have some webpages linked up where you could find out information.
2080404 tn?1643113754 My doctor just took me off Lithium and what I was taking to sleep- Trazadone- and switched me to Tegretol and Ambien. I have Bi polar type II and Borderline Personality Disorder with Ultradian cycles. I just joined this site while doing absent-minded research browsing on the two disorders and decided "why not?". Set up a profile and even trackers which is something else. But I can't help but find purely scientific facts about the medicines, has anyone been on them?
Avatar n tn once you sleep ur 8 hrs its in you but the sleep part is gone...to me lithium and serquil are brother and sister...but lithium dont sedate you like serquil does..i belive what everyone say..what one med would do for them might not you..were all difft chemasty!! there's another one thats popular lamictal..they say this wons a winner..you have to take it in stages cuz of risk to a serious rash..but never heard of anyone getting it..hey good luck to you..ever need me just mail me...
1054665 tn?1305508455 I think my lithium for bp 2 is causing me to twitch and jerk mostly when in a relaxed state. It bothers me, I try to keep if from happening then it almost seems to build up and then comes out all at once and so I jerk and twitch more then before I tried to stop it. I tried to mention it to my meds lady but she don't seem to listen to me any more, I don't like that she don't. Any ideas, any help is welcomed.
Avatar f tn I just changed due to having to do blood tests but it worked. All I take is lamactal and trazadone at bedtime. Or when on lithium took that and trazadone. I also take clonidine as needed for anxiety none of those cause weight gain. What ever you do if you dont want to gain weight don't take seraquil I gained 20lbs in one month and my Dr changed that to the trazadone.
1108262 tn?1273179266 DOES ANY ONE TAKE TRILEPTAL FOR BIPOLAR ??? IF SO HOW MUCH AND FOR HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN TAKING IT??
Avatar f tn t need to do blood tests. The 3 standards are lithium, Depakoate and Lamictal. Every person has different reactions but I found Lamictal the most tolerable as for the side effects you describe such as cognitive side effects (the mental dulling you described). You could ask about that. If you've been tried on all of those there are other mood stabilizers on some of the websites on the links page.
491030 tn?1242424766 I am afraid of taking the Lithium as well I thought I was doing ok with the Trileptal but I guess not becuz I am bipolar 1. I need 2 mood stabalizers I guess, that is what my doc said.... I am just sick of this when I think things are starting to be ok it starts raining hard!
Avatar m tn Yes right now I am taking lithium and trileptal. I was on lamictal and trileptal but had to switch to lithium as my insurance allowance for medication has run out and lamictal and trileptal costs about $500.00 per month. Befor the month is out I'll have to go to lithium and depakote until I can figure something else out.
Avatar m tn Lithium does have a side effect profile like all medications but it is the only medication that was developed specifically for use as a mood stabilizer. There are other options as well regarding mood stabilizers besides lithium and Lamictal of course. Go to the welcome page for websites that are clinically accurate and consumer friendly such as: http://www.psycom.net/depression.central.bipolar.html http://www.psycheducation.org/depression/meds/moodstabilizers.
Avatar f tn tegretol is supposedly the safest among the 3 classical drugs for BP. the other 2 are lithium and valproex. Tegretal is not used much in the USA because of drug interactions and sometimes replaced by it's weaker cousin trileptal. i tried it myself 2 years ago but couldn't tolerate because of the headaches it caused me. However i assume it's better than the other 2. look nothing of the sort as which is better than such and such it's all related to the person.
Avatar f tn As for mood stabilizers you can go to the links page but assuming you tried Lithium and Depakoate (which are the most used mood stabilizers) there is Trileptal, Topomax, Keppra and Neurontin. Those are more in use. Lovaza is an anti-cholesterol medication used experimentally for bipolar and it works in the same manner as fish oil. That is FDA approved and has shown promising results.
Avatar f tn My advice to you when considering any medication is try and avoid lithium and depakote as both can have an effect on the thyroid, lithium in particular can have some nasty side effects for some. They also have the nasty habit of causing weight gain, and Im not talking a small amount.
Avatar f tn but i would like to share this with you lamictal and trileptal do affect birth control pills and vise verse i.e. you can get pregnant using these as they reduce the effectiveness of birth control pills by 40%to 50% ,,,,,,,,,,also (which done me a great harm) the birth control pills reduce the effect of BP meds up to 50% also. i read on some site (but i cannot remember which) that birth control pills can affect most of psychiatric meds.
632572 tn?1222462885 The myth that all patients who take lithium gain weight or need to change diets or restricts them is a favorite of some doctors and online sources, in fact other MS drugs are far more likely do do that (you noted Depakote which has almost guarentee of weight gain ) - Ive taken lithium for over 2 years now and have not gained weight and it has not restrcited my diet on bit - I eat what i want when I want and I can even drink alcohol as long as I am moderate and stay well hydrated.
Avatar f tn You are right that in the UK, the pdocs stick to the drugs that are specifically indicated for bipolar, like Depakote, Lithium, and antpsychotics. Hopefully I can convince him to let me try it. Thanks again for your reply!
Avatar m tn t say which is best to use but Lamictal was the most effective for me as well as other people and generally used more than the others. Trileptal unlike Tegretol (which its clinically similar to) does not require a blood test. Neurontin and Topomax don't but they are generally used as adjuncts. I was not able to tolerate Keppra because of personality changes and its not used often for this exact reason.
