trileptal and dilantin

Hi, Tammy, I'm no stranger to TN, and it's rearing it's ugly head again, lately. I take a combination of Gabapentin, and Trileptal (a kin to Tegritol). Trileptal makes me dizzy, but if I ramp up very slowly, it becomes tolerable. So, I start with 300 mg each of G and T at bedtime, for three days. Then, I add the same doses in the morning, so that my morning and evening doses are 12 hours apart. I do this for three days, and then add a noon dose if necessary.

Because I was on Trileptal and Dilantin. Dilantin made my gums swell so I had to have surgery on my gums. Hope this helps...

I just got back from my dr, they want to wean me from dilantin to Keppra, b/c of "chest pain side effects" and continued problems with balance issues after last sz. Crabby'ness? oh just great! now i got that to ""look forward to""?

This is the first time I've seen anyone in here ask this question,....uh....Apparently it can and does effect your siezure condition if your meds are of a specific type, I had a severe epsiode back in december 08 and had to be put in a COMA because of the fact that I began hallucinating badly after I had just stopped tasking the chantix. I stopped taking chantix because of the nightmares it caused me,...Nightmares I'd rather forget about,.....

I suffer from constant pain - pain specialists here have tried injections - burning the nerve, botox and every possible drug - Lyrica, indomethacin, neurontin, dilantin, elavil - opiates make it worse (trileptal was the only one that helped but lowered my sodium to 118 within 48 hours at just 300 mgs a day) 3 neurologists have suggested just living life out on klonopin but i refuse (high gaba covers the pain - ironic - depakote and tomomax make it worse.

i say my new neoro today and he wanted me to look at 3 other meds(lamictal, topomax, and trileptal) and they all have just as bad or more side effects including severe acne. ive been trying to ghave a good attitude but its starting to get to me and it has almost eliminated my social life. i dont care what ppl think. acne does make a difference and i dont think a good looking girl would like me with my face all messed up.

said they were complex partial seizures and she went on dilantin and depakote then keppra and ended with trileptal and now on keppra and trileptal...seizures still are not controlled and she goes through cyles of increased seizures and memory loss and headaches and seizures seem to be getting more frequent and the keppra is terrible...and now they want to try lamitra or zonegran...every mediceine is so disruptive to her and do not control the seizures..

I now am on prednisone as well as the trileptal and at 40mg this seems to hold the pain and whooshing sound back for most of the day, provided I am not exposed for too long to any of my known stimuli. Any suggestions?

I have a TSH of 0.24 and T4 of 1.04. I have been on Dilantin for 30 years. I have been on Thyroid replacement therapy for 18 years with monthly injection of B12. I have had extreme fatigue and chest pains. Seeing neurologist for medicine change and have be referred to endocrinologist. How concerned should I be? What tests should be given? Is this my pituitary gland?

I would recommend consulting your Neurologist. Together, you and your Neurologist can weigh the pros and cons of taking Dilantin or possibly another medication.

I was lucky and after 3 procedures have been pain free and medication free for almost 4 years. So I was able to wean off the Trileptal under doctors orders.

Hello Dear, Stopping Dilantin quickly is not recommended. Although Dilantin is not addicting and is not likely to be abused, stopping it too quickly can cause seizures to worsen. Dilantin Withdrawal Symptoms The most significant Dilantin withdrawal symptom is a seizure. Suddenly stopping Dilantin can increase your risk of seizures These seizures can be especially severe and very difficult to control.

my neuro is taking me off dilantin slowly. i take 400mg daily . my neuro told me dilantin will cause mood swings and cause me to be irritable and was hard on your body after being on them so long. i have started keppra and dropping 1 dilantin a month . i was told my moods will improve and i will start to think more clearly. my neuro told me dilantin does slow your thinking and leaves you in a fog.

Right now I am actually on Keppra and Topamax and they have both kept me seizure free for over 3+ years and I have no side effects. My memory isn't that great but I'm not sure I can blame the drugs. The two of those as a combo, for me, are wonderful!

For TN that is not due to a specific cause, treatments that have been helpful include as you mentioned elavil and lyrica, as well as other medications such as trileptal, carbamazepine, and neurontin. The latter 3 were originally developed as a treatment for seizures but have been found very useful in TN. Other less commonly used medications include phenytoin (dilantin), a seizure medication, and antidepressants such as cymbalta.

it can also cause nystagmus, signs of cerebellar problems like ataxia. Apart from these it can also cause swollen gums and lips and easy bruising and bleeding. Hope this helps!

Just wanted to ask if anyone has experienced swollen glands and itchy eyes when taking trileptal? I've only been on it now for 3wks and am currently on 75mg along with 375mg of Keppra twice daily. I don't have a rash but am wondering if this is just a cold or side effect from meds. I called the nurse yesterday at docs office they suggested being checked out by PMD, any suggestions? I dont have a fever or any other symptoms? Thanks for the feedback.

I took 2 old, and 1 new for about a month, then 2 new and 1 old, and am now on 3 new dilantin 100mg. every day. I have been on this for about 2 weeks, and I have not had any problem at all. I do feel kinda nervous about it, though, and never leave home without my medical card in my wallet. (something I never even had to think about with the old dilantin). How about you? Are you on the new capsules? If so, how are you doing?

3 and they gave him a loading dose of 500mg. PO of dilantin, and 500mg. IV Dilantin. He is very regimented taking his Dilantin and does not miss doses. And told him to take 400mgs. today. I have a call in to our family Dr. and waiting for a return. We were being seen by a Neurologist, but she abruptly cancelled my husbands January appt. and said she was leaving town for a month, and did not refer us to any other Dr. so we saw the family Dr. who is prescribing.

Hi, I'm new to the sight but have been doing research on Trileptal and MS. I currently take Trileptal for Partial Seizures (my seizures are well controlled with it) but whenever I miss 2 doses in a row (which I obviously try not to), I experience numbness and tingling in my face and head. I know these are symptoms of MS and I know Trileptal can be used for MS patients to help with nerve issues. I guess my question is should I see my neurologist?

Two meta-analyses (an analytic study combining the results of several clinical trials) done by Sirven, et al (2004) and Tremont-Lukats, et al (2008) showed no benefit to giving anti-epileptic drugs in general, and Dilantin in particular, to patients with brain tumors in order to prevent an initial seizure.
