If you are on a disease modifier and how you are getting along (despite this problem). See you around!
Avatar n tn I have a recent dx of Trigeminal Neuralgia from Primary Care and have been referred to Neurology for further evaluation. The pain distribution is unilateral and follows the sensory distribution of cranial nerve V at the maxillary area. History of previous trauma (neuroplasia) dates to 1997, though asymptomatic to current presentation. There is no prior history of TMJ, aneurysms, tumors or other common precipitants. I am 61 years old, consistent with typical onset.
Avatar f tn I do have TMJ problems as well as trigeminal neuralgia. The TMJ was mainly a result of grinding my teeth in my sleep and clenching my teeth during the day. I used a night guard at night and it stopped the pain. I still get tense muscles occasionally, if I am clenching my teeth or have my mouth open at the dentist or eat really chewy candy. I had an xray of my jaw to confirm the TMJ problem. I also experienced clicking and popping in my jaw, and sharp pain that felt like it was in my ear.
Avatar f tn Ok Listen I have TMJ, I got it after some dental work was done on my teeth last year, The nerves in my face are killing me. my mouth burns on the inside as well on the outside my lips burn and sometimes I get stabbing pain in my cheekbones, I will have burning even on my nose. This so miserable. Has anyone had this. The doctor tells me my bite if off that's causing this.
Avatar n tn Headache and tingling and pain in left side of face could be due to trigeminal neuralgia, temporal arteritis, inner ear problem or TMJ. In TMJ there is pain on clenching the teeth. In Trigeminal neuralgia the point in front of the ear is usually painful on pressing. It could also be due to cold and sinusitis. It is difficult to comment beyond this at this stage. Do discuss this with your doctor and get yourself examined Hope this helps.
Avatar n tn However, I had the same symptoms you were having and was diagnosed with Trigeminal Neuralgia. Its where one or more of the three main nerves in your face cause nerve pain, or neuralgia. The first nerve lays across the eyebrows, the second lays across your cheek bones and the third nerve lays across the chin. My doctor put me on Lyrica and Klonopin and it seems to help a little, although the pain does intensify and the pain medication does not work for it since it is nerve pain.
Avatar f tn t say for certainty what was the issue is the neurologist says trigeminal neuralgia and the ENT says TMJ. The pain is horrible and is daily. Where my mouth hurts there isn't even a tooth there! So far I have been on tegretol, Neurontin, 800mg ib profufen, Tylenol, vicodin, Tylenol 3, and Norco's and acyclovir (in case it was shingles) not all at the same time. NOTHING works. Well, the ib proufen works but it only lasts maybe 2 hours and I can only take it every 12 hours.
Avatar f tn Does anyone out there have neuralgia pain along with their TMJ or TMD pain??? I've been tested for trigeminal neuralgia several times and they are telling me I don't have it, or facial neuralgia, yet it fits the description according to the pain I am having. My pain is extreme, and I am taking various meds that are making me sick... Wondering if anyone else is in this position.. seekandfind46..
Avatar f tn I have been suffering for 2-1/2 years with oral facial pain. It began on the left and is now bilateral. I get severe, constant pain in the upper gums, teeth, cheeks, temples, jaws, neck. At times there are sharp twinges, but mostly it is a deep, constant ache. I have had close to pain-free moments, but just when i think I'm cured, it flares up. I have had 2 diagnosis. TMJ with osteoarthritis of the jaw joints and cervical spine. The other diagnosis is from a neurologist.
Avatar n tn Thinking of it all now, I feel the facial tingling and the pain are due to the TMJ. Trigeminal Neuralgia looked less likely. The TMJ has to be taken care of. Your doctors should be able to tell you how much more time you need to get TMJ under control. Anemia (low hemoglobin) should also be ruled out. What are you taking now for the TMJ ? Please let me know if I am missing any other symptoms. I was trying to put together all the symptoms.
404715 tn?1233829631 Not having any doctors here to help me I went out of town to an emergency where they then put me on tegretol and told me I most likley have trigeminal neuralgia and set up an appointment with a neurologist.I was on tegretol for two weeks and waiting to go to my neurologist appointment but the pain was still unbearable so I went to the emergency in my city where they changed my meds and put me on neurotin which took a week to work and most of the pain is gone.
Avatar m tn Hi, Thank you for your question. This may be Trigeminal neuralgia as you have typical one sided facial pain extending to temple and eye( ophthalmic branch of trigeminal nerve may be involved) and sore gums of the teeth of same side (maxillary branch of 5th nerve). Trigeminal neuralgia may have a triggering factor like recent history of tooth extraction, touch, cold breeze or hot sensation etc. which you need to evaluate and avoid.
Avatar f tn Hello to fellow sufferers. I was just diagnosed with either Trigeminal Neuralgia or TMJ. Yes, it's true, Dr doesn't know. I checked TMJ and the stabbing, excruciating pain that feels like there's an icepick being jammed into my ear, Sounds like TMJ but I also am VERY touch-sensitive when it happens. I can't even feather touch anywhere on my ear or area around it. So, if anyone could shed any light on this, it'd be greatly appreciated.
Avatar n tn i have been treated for tmj for 5 years with no relief and then i had an arthrocentesis done and still no relief. now my doc tells me i have trigeminal neuralgia and is going to give me an injection into that nerve. what i want to know is there side effects of this injection? and can trigeminal neuralgia cause pain in the back of the head where the skull meets the spine. i have had continuous pain there worse then ever. i am now on neurontin and baclofen and it helps extremely.
Avatar f tn Your descriptions suggest trigeminal neuralgia. Seeing a neurologist or orofacial pain specialist is advised.
Avatar n tn Numbness of lower left lip is not a common manifestation of trigeminal neuralgia or tmj issue. If your tmj specialist does not know how to diagnose and manage, you may need it see an Orofacial pain specialist.
Avatar n tn Regarding the symptoms that you have, they sound like a neuralgia, and more specifically a trigeminal neuralgia. Without being able to get a detailed history an examine you I cannot give you an exact diagnosis. Trigeminal neuralgia is pain that presents in a paroxysmal fashion in the distribution of the trigeminal nerve (frontal region, maxillar region and mandibular region).
Avatar n tn It sounds to me like you could have a sensitive/over-active nerve called trigeminal neuralgia. It can be very painful. I would recommend seeing a neurologist bc they should be able to help.
Avatar f tn Yesterday i experienced from waking stabbing like pains just above the area of the top of my ear. They lasted seconds but happened very regularly throughout the day until it finally settled yesterday evening. It wasn't shooting anywhere else but little stabbing pains in one area. Is this neuralgia? maybe Trigeminal? I have been having a lot of jaw clicking, pain in upper teeth from constantly clenching them & ear blockage/tinnitus which my doctor is thinking is all related to TMJ.
Avatar f tn Hello. For a few months my trigeminal nerve has been irritated. It's the first and second branch. I experience the electrical shock (more like a tickle) that I've experienced with Trigeminal Neuralgia but there's no pain. It seems to happen often when my head is tilted forward/down and that makes me wonder if it could be an issue with my cervical spine. I really don't have any unusual discomfort in my neck. I don't have headaches or sinus pressure or anything.
Avatar f tn If all these are normal, then you would need CT scan of the brain. TMJ, temporal arteritis and trigeminal neuralgia too should be investigated. Consult a good neurologist and rule out these possibilities. Hope this helps. Do let me know if there is any thing else and keep me posted. Take care!
Avatar n tn Also, sharp jabbing pains may suggest several differentials like trigeminal neuralgia, cluster headaches, hemicrania continua, paroxysmal hemicrania and SUNCT headaches. Arthritic pain due to musculoskeletal causes may also present as sharp pains.
