trigeminal-neuralgia

Avatar n tn I suffer from Trigeminal neuralgia since 2005. For first few years I didn't have to take any meadication. Since 2010 attacks were frequent. I am on Tegretol 50mg am & 50 pm. The side effects are terrible, feeling extremly tired & also feeling low. Some times I have to increase the dose& it's unberable. Is there alternative?
Avatar m tn Does Trigeminal Neuralgia worsen with age. I've tried Tegretol but the pain has some back agaiin after about a year and is very, very intense. It is like a needle made of glass penetrating the right side of my nose and going into my head. What is the best treatment for this and can it be cured completely. Avatar f tn Hello, In your case, I think that it can be trigeminal neuralgia. Trigeminal neuralgia is very painful swelling (inflammation) of the nerve (trigeminal nerve) that delivers feeling to the face and "surface" of the eye. Trigeminal neuralgia causes severe, short-lasting (only a few seconds) facial pain on the side of the affected nerve even by slight touch. Mostly affects elderly females. May be caused in multiple sclerosis also.
Avatar n tn i have been treated for tmj for 5 years with no relief and then i had an arthrocentesis done and still no relief. now my doc tells me i have trigeminal neuralgia and is going to give me an injection into that nerve. what i want to know is there side effects of this injection? and can trigeminal neuralgia cause pain in the back of the head where the skull meets the spine. i have had continuous pain there worse then ever. i am now on neurontin and baclofen and it helps extremely.
Avatar m tn I suffer from trigeminal neuralgia and am currently taking BACLOFEN to help with the pain. I was treated with the Gamma Knife about a year ago without success. A friend also had TN and was treated with an alcohol shot to the face that had to be repeated about 4 weeks later. That was over 10 years ago and he has had NO pain since. I can find only passing references to the alcohol shot to the face. My question is where can I go to get this alcohol shot to the face?
Avatar f tn Carbamazepine (Tegretol) was first used to treat trigeminal neuralgia in the 1990s. Because of its success in treating that painful condition (which is very difficult to treat), it was then used to treat all kinds of neuropathic pain. While it may be useful, there are more modern medications that may help if you have a neuropathic pain problem -- for instance, Neurontin (gabapentin) and Lyrica (pregabalin).
Avatar n tn You should ask your PCP for a referral to a neurologist or a facial pain specialist. There is pre-Trigeminal neuralgia which manifests as a toothache. Many people have unnecessary dental work done thinking the pain is caused by their teeth, when in reality it's the nerve. Hot or cold compresses can give temporary relief. I've also used Oragel rubbed on the teeth and gums to numb the pain temporarily. Let us know how you're doing.
Avatar m tn Hi, Thank you for your question. This may be Trigeminal neuralgia as you have typical one sided facial pain extending to temple and eye( ophthalmic branch of trigeminal nerve may be involved) and sore gums of the teeth of same side (maxillary branch of 5th nerve). Trigeminal neuralgia may have a triggering factor like recent history of tooth extraction, touch, cold breeze or hot sensation etc. which you need to evaluate and avoid.
467070 tn?1224625377 As Sanjay said, prior dental procedures are often a cause of trigeminal neuralgia. The exact mechanisms for TN are unknown. There are treatments for your pain and I suggest that you see your doctor or neurologist.
Avatar n tn Then large lumps under arm began, antibiotics did not work and had allergic reaction. Regular doc referred me to a neurologist who diagnosed trigeminal neuralgia and prescribed anti-seizure and anti-depressant. Had MRI and EEG. Tests showed nothing. So now I am not sure what to do, I am 23 and can't live the rest of my life like this. The pain wakes me up at night and I have very bad head aches. What is the next step to take? Any similar stories?
Avatar n tn After a 2nd visit to a different er yesterday morning, the er doctor prescribed neurontin which I know is used for trigeminal neuralgia, so I am hoping after a few doses, the pain will start to ease up until she can see a neurologist.
Avatar m tn I was dignosed with MS in 2003 after 20 years of off and on symptoms. The last year I have experienced off and on stabbing hot pain down the right side of my head and neck that last for 3 seconds to a minute and comes on at any time of the day or night. It doesn't seem to be associated with head movement or jaw activity. The Doctor says it sounds like Trigeninal Neuralgia but it doesn't seem to follow the same pattern of pain that Trigeninal Neuralgia produces.
Avatar f tn I have Atypical Trigeminal Neuralgia as well. Both were caused by a surgery to remove a benign parotid gland tumor on my right side. I wish I had a cure for all of us, but I don't. My A.D. is on my entire right ear and part of my right cheek. This may sound funny, but in order to actually sleep (cuz I am a right-sided sleeper), I bought a memory foam pillow and cut out a section where my ear goes. It has helped immensely sleeping!
Avatar n tn Regarding the symptoms that you have, they sound like a neuralgia, and more specifically a trigeminal neuralgia. Without being able to get a detailed history an examine you I cannot give you an exact diagnosis. Trigeminal neuralgia is pain that presents in a paroxysmal fashion in the distribution of the trigeminal nerve (frontal region, maxillar region and mandibular region).
429700 tn?1308007823 Sounds like Trigeminal neuralgia (TN). The Trigeminal nerve has 3 main branches. There are motor component along with the sensory ones. It can cause motor tic and was known as tic douloureux at one time.
Avatar n tn I, too, have suffered with trigeminal neuralgia, which has been controlled with Neurontin and also steroid injection blocks in head and neck. I hope this has been of some help to you.....Take care.....
Avatar f tn i believe that i have trigeminal neuralgia but i do not know what tests are done to confrim this . can you tell me what tests have to be done so i can ask my physician to ruin these tests or demand they run them ? i have been so sick for so long . i literally have been to 25 -30 doctors to find out what is wrong with me . and every test comes back negative except that a test came back positve for fungal aspergillosis .but they do not say anything about treating it .
Avatar m tn I have been suffering with Trigeminal Neuralgia since 2006. I have done some reading that states people do take flexeril. Is this med helpful for nerve pain?
Avatar m tn Traumatic trigeminal neuropathy is generally not associated with trigeminal neuralgia. However, both entities may be responsive to pharmacologic intervention. Seeing a neurologist or orofacial pain specialist misadvised.
Avatar f tn s helping a little because the pain is not too bad, but the occurrences are now nearly constant. I had a bad episode with trigeminal neuralgia about 15 years ago. The pain was so bad, I was eventually hospitalized for three days. They had me on high doses of neurontin while the doctors considered surgical options. Fortunately, the Neurontin finally worked and I was released. No reoccurrence of that, but now the occipital has arrived.
542332 tn?1214592336 In general, a recurrence of trigeminal neuralgia can be difficult to treat. Patients who have a recurrence have multiple options, including getting another microvascular decompresssion. However, because I do not have your history or records, I would not be able to comment on your condition. It is reasonable to ask your surgeon about going over all the options.
Avatar n tn t want to operate on me through MVD because my pain is bilateral and my pain syndrome is not that of trigeminal neuralgia. My pain specialist suggested a sphenopalatine ganglion block (a surgical invasive procedure) but my mum wouldn't hear of it. I feel a little less pressure when I tilt my head backwards, and can feel the nerves in my nose vibrating more intensely when I massage the back of my head. I have suffered a lot alot through the 1.5 yr, but the pain remained the same.
