Avatar n tn Areas in which a post herpes simplex neuralgia might occur. Does it ever cause a diffuse neuralgia? This discussion is related to Can Herpes Simplex cause postherpetic neuralgia?.
Avatar n tn I am 45 years old. I have had canker sores and cold sores occassionally since childhood. I strongly believe my outbreaks are caused from stress. The past few years, I don't have an outbreak on my lip or mucus membranes, but instead have a debiltating headache that lasts for three days. It is always the same, on one side of my head. It feels like a knife has been inserted under my occipital ridge, goes through my brain and ends behind my eye. It is constant and no pain medicine helps.
432376 tn?1266257738 For this, well need help of the other symptom, the face. To me, it looks likes the pain and hypersensitivity to touch as seen in Trigeminal Neuralgia. You have described the facial pain in exactly the manner in which Trigeminal Neuralgia strikes. I am concerned here. If this is trigeminal neuralgia, and you do not have any other indication that would tell that this is a herpes virus infection, the next option is MS. I feel this should be kept in mind and ruled out accordingly.
Avatar n tn Can genital or simplex herpes cause Postherpetic Neuralgia? I had a severe herpes outbreak (8 blisters everywhere) beginning April 24 when my eye doctor took me off of Acyclovir after nine years. The Acyclovir was used to prevent further flares in my left eye from Herpes Iritis. Now I am suffering from pain in the muscle and tingling in my right arm. There was a blister in that area which has now healed.
Avatar n tn THe location is on my knee and is a small outbreak (less than 10 lesions). I was just told that it might be Herpes simplex rather than Zoster. I do have HSV1 and asked if I could have transmitted it to my knee, I was told no, but that would mean a new infection of HSV????. I do not know if I have HSV2. I know that HSV can occur anywhere on the body.
424454 tn?1221109013 MS is linked to two of the Herpes viruses, but neither of them are the cold sore virus which is Herpes Simplex Type I. There are many, many different viruses in the Herpes family. The first that has a strong link with MS is the Epstein-Barr Virus which also causes mononucleosis. Most people have had this virus and don't get very ill from it. The second in the Human Herpes Virus - 6, which causes the early childhood illness commonly known as Roseola. The link is indirect.
Avatar f tn I am a 38 year old female who was just recently diagnosed with trigeminal neuralgia. Back in 2003, I had brain surgery to remove a pinealoma and had a shunt placed less than a month later due to meningitis and hydrocephalus. My question is whether trigeminal neuralgia could be caused by scar tissue from the brain surgery. I understand that the trigeminal nerve begins at the base of the skull which is where my incision began for brain surgery. I have an appt. with a new neurologist on Nov.
405614 tn?1329144114 Compression of the trigeminal nerve by ectatic vessels, a recognized cause of idiopathic trigeminal neuralgia, was not observed. We conclude that in MS trigeminal neuralgia is usually caused by demyelinating lesions affecting pontine trigeminal pathways.
739070 tn?1338603402 They are both Herpes virus. I believe cold sores (Herpes simplex) are HHV1 and HHV2. Shingles (Herpes zoster) and Chicken Pox (Herpes varicella) are caused by HHV3. Since the Herpes virus likes to invade skin and nerve cells and then lie dormant until it is prompted to reactivate and cause lesions along nerve fiber pathways, I see how you envision the connection to your TN pain.
Avatar n tn in some people, in which case it travels back down the nerve to the skin surface. There is no cure for the herpes simplex virus and treatment is not essential, as an outbreak of genital herpes will usually clear up by itself. Please take pain killers if you find the pain debilitating, take adequate rest and lots of fluids. Please consult a neurosurgeon if the symptoms persist for a long time. Hope this helps you. Take care and regards!
Avatar n tn It starts when herpes crusted over and in fact it may even appear after absence of herpes virus. It will be best that you consult a neurologist and treatment options could be anticonvulsants such as gabapentin, antideprassants and topical lidocaine lotion. Now a day, few recent treatments could be rhizotomy (cutting the affected nerve to relieve pain) and TENS (a electrical pulse therapy). Hope this helps.
Avatar f tn You can consider these options with your neurologist, though trigeminal neuralgia is a fair possibility. treatment would include painkillers, tricyclic anti depressants etc. Hope this helps. Take care.
Avatar f tn There are a number of conditions which can be associated with the symptoms you describe including herpes infections of the eye, herpes zoster or simplex, changes that occur with diabetes, trigeminal neuralgia, tumors, prior irradiation treatment, incomplete eyelid closure, and trauma of the eye. However, a complete eye examination should be performed to determine the cause of his symptoms. I would recommend that he continue to seek an eyeMD care if his symptoms persist. Dr. Feldman Sandy T.
Avatar m tn Post herpetic neuralgia is the one condition that most seems to match my symptoms, even though I think my recent outbreak was Herpes Simplex (genital) rather than Herpes Zoster. Like you, I have all the same questions - can it be passed to my partner, does it get less uncomfortable with time, what are the other possible things it could be, etc. It's no fun at all, not least because of the strain it's putting on my relationship.
Avatar f tn I have CFS/ Fibro and the herpes simplex virus. Does anyone know where I can find more info on these subjects? I am having a horrible flair up and if there are supplements to take to ease all of this pain.
Avatar n tn I just found out that I do have Trigeminal Neuralgia. I have the same symptons you have and I have researched this many people have unneccesary procedures done on their teeth thinking its that. I would recommend before you undergo the root canal seeing a Neurologist and having them do a MRI they will be able to see if its the Trigeminal Neuralgia by this test. I hope this helps, I know how frustrating this can be and also how painful it is. Please let me know what happens.
Avatar m tn The test of HSV 1+2-IgGAb to Herpes Simplex Virus, serum by CLIA came indeterminate with reading at 0.961 and HSV1+2-IgMAb to Herpes Simplex Virus, serum by EIA came in negative with reading at 0.06.
Avatar m tn Would someone who has Trigeminal Neuralgia please help me out with the progression of this condition. For about a week now - I have numbness above my left eye that seems to have gotten worse everyday - first my eyebrow, then my forehead and now my skull. I have a low grade headache at times and when I lift my eyebrow, pain shoots up my forehead and skull, although not intense pain. I went to see my PCP and he thinks it is Trigeminal Neuralgia and wants to do an MRI.
Avatar f tn I have always had occurrences of cold sores on my lips. Apparently obtaining the disease from my mom, since she also gets cold sores. I had never taken time to research cold sores prier to this occurrence on my chin. I really had no idea that cold sores are so contagious, and that they can be transmitted to other parts of your body. And after reading some research on oral herpes simplex 1 and genital herpes simplex 2, I can see why this is.
Avatar m tn Hi, Herpes simplex is a viral disease caused by Herpes simplex viruses; both herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV–1) and herpes simplex virus 2 (HSV–2) cause herpes simplex. Recurrent oral infection is more common with HSV-1 infections than with HSV-2. Prodromal symptoms often precede a recurrence. Symptoms typically begin with tingling (itching) and reddening of the skin around the infected site.
