Avatar m tn I was on Tramadol for 4 years. I was up to 400 mgs a day. I tapered down to 50 mgs a day, but I don't think I did it long enough. I decided I'd had enough of taking them. I then just stopped. The physical withdrawals were awful. I was fortunate that I was off work for the first 12 days after my last pill. Now I've been off of them completely for about 16 days. The thing that is really bad and I am going to have to get some professional help for is this awful depression.
Avatar m tn I did not know tramadol was an approved drug for depression? I do know it is a weak pain reliever, but the effect it has on seratonin levels would make it be abused for depression...just as other narcotics are used for this as well. Used for energy and to feel good verses pain. As far as I know, none of the opiates, or opiate like drugs are approved to treat depression cos they r heck to get off of.
Avatar f tn t need another separate Tramadol withdrawal post, but as similar as the other withdrawal stories seem to be with my own experiences, there is one part which differs greatly with me and I only hope someone may have some insight. Two years ago I tried Tramadol for a week. It's a long story, but after that week I decided to stop taking it. I've been through the withdrawal and quit successfully, but I began using the drug again after that.
Avatar m tn What is happening to you is a daily withdrawal from tramadol. Even though Tramadol is not considered a true narcotic medication and is relatively easily prescribed for pain by some physicians, it is as you have found out quite addictive and difficult to quit. As you already know, it usually takes several weeks of the really nasty symptoms of acute withdrawal, followed by several months of just insomnia and general weakness and depression.

Avatar m tn Hey! and Welcome! Congratulations on your decision. First, it is completely normal to feel depressed and w/o energy right now. You sound pretty self-aware and that's a real plus! You can do this! As FourJays stated above - and she has real experience w/ this drug - Tramadol has anti-depressant properties AND opiate properties so it's as if you're coming off both. Rebound anxiety & depression are common when discontinuing Tramadol.
8265858 tn?1403378544 A physician may be able to prescribe you some Neurontin (gabapentin) for general malaise, anxiety and muscle cramps, Requip for the restless leg syndrome and possibly something like Seroquel low dose for the insomnia. The reason for this longer depression and insomnia symptoms is because Tramadol, besides affecting the opioid receptors, has an effect on the serotonin receptors in the central nervous system.

Avatar f tn You have to stop taking the Tramadol 100%, before your sleep will return to normal. Taking Tramadol will only put you back at square one all over again. You have to get off 100% and HEAL. Your sleep is not going to return to normal unless you quit Tramadol 100%, then go 2-4 weeks without it. But 7 years is a long time to be on them. Did you do a Taper down to 1 pill per day at least before you quit? Or did you just try to go Cold Turkey for a while?

Avatar n tn I have been taking DHC for a year, I used to take tramadol for a year prior and then switched primarily to DHC. I have done a c/t withdrawal from tramadol and I remember I didnt really feel the effects right away. Its been about 48 hours, maybe a little more, from a cold turkey w/d from a 900mg daily habit of DHC and I havent really been hit with the severe anxiety, depression, or crazy insomnia yet. How long does it take with DHC to kick in?
Avatar f tn Long-term use of high doses of Tramadol may be associated with physical dependence and a withdrawal syndrome.Tramadol causes typical opiate-like withdrawal symptoms as well as atypical withdrawal symptoms including seizures. The atypical withdrawal symptoms are probably related to tramadol's effect on serotonin and norepinephrine re-uptake.
Avatar f tn I found this on Wiki and it does say it is and opiod and also says this - Tramadol is associated with the development of physical dependence and a severe withdrawal syndrome.[59] Tramadol causes typical opiate-like withdrawal symptoms as well as atypical withdrawal symptoms including seizures. The atypical withdrawal symptoms are probably related to tramadol's effect on serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake.
Avatar f tn That being said, what you describe is very typical after discontinuation of Tramadol, because Tramadol has anti-depressant properties. It acts like an SNRI (serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor) antidepressant, similar to Effexor. Therefore, when a person discontinues Tramadol, there is quite a signifiant emotional component of the detox/withdrawal, even moreso than detoxing from a standard opiate, like hydrocodone, or oxycodone, or heroin, for that reason.
