Avatar f tn She seemed to be more mobile when taking the Rimadyl. Not sure if switching her back to the Rimadyl would be better for her or whether her symptoms are more disease related and a change in meds won't change things. The vet has advised to keep her on Prednisone.
Avatar n tn Hi, I have an almost 14yo pit bull that is on both Metacam and Tramadol. rimadyl is an NSAID, similar to metacam and some others. Tramadol is opiate based but considered safe for dogs. My pit was on rimadyl for a year or so, then we switched to metacam which the vet said was a little stronger, then after about 2 years we added the tramadol. Just last week we upped the tramadol as dogs can develop a tolerance just like humans.
535089 tn?1400673519 The Rimadyl is quite expensive and he does so well on it so when it was time for a re-fill I had asked the Vet if there was a less expensive ant-inflammatory he could take that was close to the Rimadyl. She said no. Instead she prescribed my Dog Tramadol along with the Rimadyl. She said that by giving him the Tramadol on a daily basis, he would only need 1/2 a tablet of the Rimadyl daily. I questioned her about this and she reassured me that he would do well.
Avatar m tn Actually, tramadol (brand name is ultracet) and rimadyl are safe for dogs. I've had dogs on rimadyl for many years due to arthritis and they never had a problem with it. Tramadol was reserved for post-op pain treatment and only for a few days. Can you give us more information on exactly what kind of pain your chow chow has and any other meds that have been tried?
Avatar n tn My dog has a potential disc injury in her back. Last Saturday, she was in a lot of pain. Gave her a Rimadyl and it didn't help. Took her to the emergency vet and they prescribed Tramadol and Robaxin (pain and muscle relaxer). Took her to our normal vet on Monday and he said to continue those meds and also gave her a steroid shot. She did well throughout the week... still stiff but seemed to improve. Last night, Thursday, she seemed to be in pain again.
Avatar n tn Hello & welcome....Rimadyl is rather on the low end of quality pain control......There are many newer and better drugs available, now....Tell your Vet you need better pain management with something else....You could also ask to add "Tramadol" to the Rimadyl as a combination therapy....The two together work much better..... Good for you to have a dog of 18yrs.....Sounds like you have done everything right! I'm impressed......
172023 tn?1334672284 He's on Rimadyl 125mg bid, and Tramadol 50mg bid for now. He doesn't always get these twice a day--it depends on how much pain he seems to be in.
Avatar f tn She was also on Carprofen and Tramadol for arthritis and Denamarin (1 pill daily). Dr took her off Tramadol as her counts went up to alp 588 & alt 1000. She weighs 80lbs. Could I give her both the Denamarin and super milk thistle pills (maybe 1) since by weight she should be on 2 pills. Dr's don't seem to like going natural as it cuts into their profits.
Avatar f tn ALSO, if you take him to the vet and the vet prescribes a product called Rimadyl, do your research on it before giving it to him. Labrador retrievers are one of the breeds that are known to have adverse reactions to rimadyl, and sometimes the benefits just do not outweigh the risks in something like this. What you CAN do is to start giving him a glucosamine and chondroitin supplement.
Avatar m tn Thank you he is on pain meds ...tramadol 50 mg, every 12 hrs, rimadyl 25 mg, every 8-10 hrs and amoxicillin 250 mg every 12 hrs They gave him the tramadol the second day I took him back and the other the first day . He still lays and cries... He did just jump off the sofa and ran to the door when someone just rang the doorbell so I guess he is able to walk but chooses not to . Keeping it clean with compresses and sitting with him like a new born .
Avatar m tn If by chance it is Rimadyl, you need to get a second opinion, as Rimadyl can have very bad side effects. Nevertheless, I think you shouldn't be put in a position where you have to ask for help and advice from an internet forum. The vet should be giving more help here if you are so worried, and your dog is suffering. When the vet suggested the meds might be causing the vomiting (which by the way, twice a day is excessive!) -did he suggest an alternative medication?.
Avatar f tn t put him on any anti-inflammatory drugs because of the Cushings. No rimadyl , etc. I asked how can I help to ease the pain. He is still so full of life ! I put an ice pack on his neck and hips for a few seconds until he walks away from me. I asked about acupuncture. I'll do anything to help my little boy. Please tell me that there is something or some way to relieve some of his pain. Thanking you in advance.
1653057 tn?1302368323 t find anything on the x-rays or from a physical exam of my dog. Our original vet prescribed rimadyl, which we gave to our dog for about 1-2 weeks. We bought stairs for the couches and bed so she didn't have to jump up or down anymore. The medicine didn't seem to do anything. My dog still hid under the bed and urinated in the house during the day. We also noticed that she seemed unbalanced and fell/tripped quite a bit which she never did before.
Avatar f tn He was on a special diet from the vet JD dry food, Rimadyl, Tramadol and a special vitamin mixture for his arthritis and tumors (not cancerous but one on his hip that grew to the size of half a soccer ball), I spent over 250.00 a month for over 10 months for Jake's health and comfort. He was 10 when he had a stroke (I pray not caused by the rimadyl - reading the info on it does not make me happy).
Avatar f tn Well, the sweet old fellow has been a little stiff lately, he still enjoys his walks and games and dancing but not for as long as when he was young. So the vet prescribed Rimadyl. He said to give it to him for fourteen days and then only when we noticed him getting stiff again. This has made such a difference in his life!! He's bouncy and dancing again jumps with ease. What I'm wondering is why only fourteen days? Does the medicine build up toxins if taken for too long?
Avatar n tn Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatories such as Rimadyl or Previcox do help with joint pain and work to decrease inflammation which can further help to deteriorate joints. Other medications such as Tramadol work with NSAIDS to help make them even more effective. Nutraceuticals such as glucosamine (which she is already taking) and Omega 3 Fatty acids also help adjunctively.
675347 tn?1365460645 com is reporting that pet owners Christopher Cooper and Shelley Smith have filed suit against drug manufacturer giant Pfizer. The couple blame Rimadyl for the death of their six year old Golden Retriever Sophie. The Westword.com story states that after knee surgery on June 5th, Sophie was prescribed several medications including Rimadyl. "Side effects were uncommon, the pair (owners) say they were told." However just over a week later, Sophie began vomiting and stopped eating.

Avatar m tn Charcoal is not administered in cases of Rimadyl® toxicity due to chronic Rimadyl® administration or in the case of idiosyncratic reactions. Placement of an intravenous catheter for administration of intravenous fluids and other medications. Intravenous fluids are administered at high rates (diuresis) to rehydrate pets that are dehydrated from vomiting and diarrhea and to treat or prevent kidney failure.
Avatar f tn My dog is a four year old rotti. She was prescribed rimadyl for a tear in a ligament. After 6 days she has had her first seizure. The vet say there is no way rimadyl would do that. They wanted to put her on a seizure medicine that day. I waited to see if and when she would have her next seizure. A month later she had one. It was not nearly as bad and she recovered much more quickly. Could the rimadyl have caused the first seizure?
Avatar n tn t know anything about Sub, except it is suppose to be three times as strong as Tramadol. And since you are on Tramadol now, I say stay on that and taper off that. Why keep bouncing back and forth from one to the other? It will only bring you pain and discomfort.
403399 tn?1201833095 The only reason why Tramadol (Ultracet, Ultram, etc.) is not considered a narcotic is because at the moment it is unscheduled in the USA and pretty much everywhere else. It is fairly new being researched and first put on the market in the 90's.
Avatar m tn Our 14 year old Lab mix Sable has arthritis and is on Tramadol. It doesn’t seem to be working too well. She has many other health problems, and probably doesn’t have a lot of time left, so we would like to make her as comfortable as possible. She has kidney disease, high BP, and a Thyroid problem, so she is on Benazepral, and Thyrosyn. She hasn’t been eating well, and pain may be part of the problem. But, the Tramadol tends to make her loose her appetite.
Avatar n tn Vicodin is stronger then Tramadol. I think if you get put on tramadol you will be in alot more pain. My father inlaw takes it and it does nothing for him. I took it and it did nothing for me. Vicodin on the other hand did help my pain alittle. I would try to talk him into not doing it, ask him what is the main reason for changing your meds. I hate to say it but if you get them changed like that you will be in alot more pain. This is just my option. Tramadol did nothing for me.
Avatar n tn i have taken vicodin for about 10 years now. I have never increased the dosage or abuse the med. my dr recently put me on tramadol which i'll try anything. i am to take 2 tramadol twice daily or as needed along with 800 mg ibuprofen twice daily. i have not found any resolve with this medication (i have been on it 2 weeks). i also have not had any typical withdrawl symptoms from stopping the vicodin. i have degeneration of my t3 and t4 vertebre and spinal rotation and of course subluxation.
Avatar f tn Tramadol is just as addicting and worse to come off of .I would look into non narcotic aleratives . ...
