I also have fibro and was in pain mgmt for years to deal with the pain. While I don't have specific experience with Tramadol you are correct in that it is every bit as bad as detoxing off opiates. How old are you and when your doctor says you will have to be in pain mgmt do you really feel he/she will manage your meds responsibly?
Ya I just wanted to say, I had one of my Dogs at the vet this week for teeth issues and I told him no Tramadol, he said it doesn't do the same thing to animals. .???? How th does he know that?....just FYI. Have a great day..
The dose is obviously different for different sizes (Based on poundage of dog).....What size is your dog? Tramadol ONLY comes in 50mg. tablets, but Dosage is different depending on size.....
Did the vet say it is probably the lipoma causing the problems in his back legs? Or could it be the arthritis? Well, it sounds like you are doing everything you can for him, so you shouldn't feel like a "bad parent" There's not much any of us can do about the aging process (in Dogs and ourselves!) We just have to ride with it, and do the best we can.
My recommendation for getting off of Tramadol is to use Tylenol 3 during the first week. Tylenol has a little Codeine in it and will help with the opiate withdrawal a little. Take one when the crying is absolutely uncontrollable. The other must for Tramadol withdrawal is .5 mg of Xanax, 1 mg of Ativan, 1 mg of Klonopin, or 10 mg of Valium. I would choose Valium has it's half life is the longest therefore keeping you as stable as possible. Discuss with your Doctor.
I would take the hydros until they ran out (can go through 120 in a little over a week), then I would take the Tramadol until they ran out (about 120 in a week), then I would be on the hunt for more. I started taking them for legitimate pain, now it is because I need them. I am miserable, not sure which I'm withdrawing from or which one is the worst. How long does this last?
(Part of what motivates me is that there's no way I want to go in reverse, increasing Dosage over time. I would actually be really mad at myself if I was back to taking # 12 10/325 Vikes daily.) What's interesting is that when I think about it today, I can't believe I was taking # 12 Vikes daily (# 3 at a time, every four to six hours. And I also used to think that if I made it six hours before popping # 3 Vikes "I'm not an addict because I can go 6 hours without popping # 3 pills.
