Common Questions and Answers about Tramadol and the elderly

Avatar n tn Is she on any other meds beside the tramadol? And is the heart condition CHF? I am not a Doc ... but that sounds a lot like she might need to look at oxygen - and all elderly people have problems at some time... Do your best to fully enjoy the times she has energy - set up little trips or projects that you can share and that are not strenous...
Avatar f tn Two questions: I have chronic pain resulting from a craniotomy (had brain surgery for refractory epilepsy and a brain tumor). I see people recommending the drug tramadol....is it helpful? I've tried many different meds, have been going to RUSH pain center in Chicago for 3.5 years (had surgery 8/07), but not tramadol. Drugs have been a little helpful, but no riproaring successes. If tramadol can cause seizures, though, as I might have heard, I won't touch it....
Avatar m tn I also ran an interaction checker on all three, Tramadol, Hydroxyzine and Synthroid, Synthroid produce no interaction with the other two, al though I di get a "Moderate" Interaction on Tramadol and Hydroxyzine as below: MONITOR: Central nervous system- and/or respiratory-depressant effects may be additively or synergistically increased in patients taking multiple drugs that cause these effects, especially in elderly or debilitated patients.
Avatar f tn She is suffering from severe myoclonus and seratonin toxicity and hospice wants to take her off Tramadol and replace it with something else. I can find no info at all on withdrawal and tapering protocol in elderly debilitated Alzheimer's patients. My mom can't speak or communicate and I am absolutely horrified at what she may experience. But the Tramadol side effects she is experiencing are life threatening.
Avatar n tn yes they ALL have side effects on us and cats as well....the safest with the least side effects for pain are the following(for cats). please never use NSAID's. -bupronorphine(buprenex) -butorphanel(torbutrol) -and lastly tramadol(ultram) good luck to you and kitty, I hope you can find him some relief...at this late stage of his life and with so many health problems you need to give him the best quality for his time remaining...
Avatar f tn I have read horror stories about it here and have to say that it scares the he** outta me. The withdrawal seems worse than opiates and as bad as methadone (which I have ct'ed from) Just keep riminding yourself that every day, every minute you are closer to getting yourself and your life back. That always seemed to help me when methadone wds were making me feel like I wanted to die.
Avatar f tn Frankly, I'd be more worried about the toradol than the tramadol (ultram) since it's not supposed to be used longer than 5 days. Here's the patient information on toradol from rxlist: http://www.rxlist.com/cgi/generic/ketor.
Avatar f tn Way to go! It definately looks like you got your mind set. 16 days is fantastic! I'm on day 3 and I can't wait to say day 16 soon. I used tramadol because nobody had any other pill at the time. I'm day 3 off vicodin, morphine, norco, and tramadol and as vicki595 says, its a fake feeling. Although I didn't get the same high I got with tramadol as opposed to the others, I still was able to manage to get things done and be in a descent mood.
Avatar f tn I am on my second day of no Tramadol - actually, I am into just 6 hours of the second day and if I could only get this train that just keeps circling the inside of my skull to quiet down, I would feel so much better. Every time I try to stand too quickly, I about hit the floor - I know the reason why, I am a nurse, but I cannot slow myself down), I have never have had to. I am ashamed to say that I have been taking Tramadol for probably 3 years now and in massive doses. Massive, you ask.
Avatar f tn Hi. 5'10" Gent, and brand spankin newbie to this site. i just turned 56 in April. In my journal August. 12, 2013, I recorded wgt. 247.5 lb, BP 157/101, severe depression & anxiety with heaart palpitations and mid-nightime panic attacks. Also using CPAP setting of 14cm for severe sleep apnea, and suffered almost daily migraines. Plus my triglicerides were, as my dr put it, "through the roof!
Avatar m tn The answer, is yes. The elderly can be very sensitive to psychotropic medications, causing all kinds of side effects and adverse reactions. If the "screaming" you are observing is new since the med(s) were started, then a call to the prescribing doc is in order ASAP.
Avatar m tn A home health nurse visited for 2 weeks and stopped. She was given the Diltiazem, Lasix and Seroquel while in the hospital and has been on them about 2 months. Her doctor wants her to stay on the Seroquel indefinitely and hasn't really been concerned about monitoring her. I plan to take her to another doctor soon.
Avatar m tn When was the last time you used Tramadol?
Avatar f tn If a person is young (ish) and otherwise healthy and gets a UTI, that person will feel the normal symptoms of it, but someone who is elderly (although someone does not necessarily have to be 'elderly' to have Alzheimers), and suffers from dementia or Alzheimers, will have a much different experience. I went through this with my mother and currently, my MIL, and it is absolutely true. Below is a short excerpt taken from the link I will share below...
Avatar f tn I had brain tumor surgery in June and have been on Vicodin. In the last month i have been alternating (every 4 hrs) both Vicodin and Tramadol on a daily basis.I thought it would be a good way to decrease the Vicodin. I read the "precautions" for tramadol and it states "do not take with narcotics or other opioids". Then I realize that tramadol is just as addicting as vicodin. So why would a physician prescribe tramadol to try to get off the vicodin?
1395709 tn?1280427381 Hi Codone - hang in there, you are doing the right thing by not taking the tramadol. It is still a type of opiate and the withdrawal from that can be severe and even dangerous is stopped suddenly (more after long term use). The typical withdrawal last only 4 5 days. You should start to see some improvement tomorrow or the next day. Try taking some hot baths and even get some exercise - it really helps. There is also some good information on the health pages that may help.
Avatar m tn atonicat is right. While taking Suboxone, any other opiates you take just don't have any brain receptors to cling to so there's no point in taking the tramadol. I can't imagine tramadol would do any good for your migraines anyway. I'm also surprised any doctor would prescribe an opiate while you're taking Suboxone. Do any of the triptan meds help your migraines?
Avatar n tn Tramadol works on the same receptors that the subs attach to, hence the tramadol won't work as vicki said. You most likely won't go into w/d. Have you tried any herbal pain remedies such as cinnamon or turmeric. Both of these help to reduce inflammation which causes pain. I was on massive dosage of oxy to control my pain but since I got clean I have searched for alternative ways to control my pain and have found that there herbs really helped.
Avatar m tn Tramadol is not only a painkiller by affecting the u-opioid receptor but it also have the proprieties of inhibiting the reuptake of serotonin and norepinephrine which would make it a painkiller with SNRI proprieties. Pristiq is a SNRI antidepressant so both are interacting together. So you have increased risk of serotonin toxicity and increased risk of seizures and other neurological symptoms. Please call her doctor to let him know this is happening.
Avatar f tn Absolutely bad. As I understand it, sub if taken with opiates (and Tramadol is a synthetic opiate) will through you into full blown withdrawals.
Avatar m tn The dose may be too high and the Tramadol may be upsetting his stomach.bith meds can have a sedating effect. I would give your Vet a call and see if you can decrease the dose of Tramadol and ask for something to settle his stomach, even OTC Pepcid but do not change or add meds without speaking to your Vet. With the ulcer history, kind of surprised the Vet didn't give you something for his stomach. Do mention the stool problem too.
Avatar m tn Yes. Long term use of pain killers, even tramadol can change the pain receptors and when you stop using it you can experience heightened sensitivity and rebound pain. Of course, if you've been using it for pain related reasons its also possible that the health condition that prompted the doctor to prescribe tramadol hasn't been resolved.
1543547 tn?1298433360 Im still feeling ok but am noticing some mild cramping in my arms. Ive been taking tramadol and muscle relaxers and imodium of course. Is the cramping the start of the awful withdrawls i keep hearing about? Im scared to death rite now!
Avatar m tn stated letters sent to healthcare professionals by the FDA and PriCara, the maker of the 2 medications and a division of Ortho-McNeil-Janssen Pharmaceuticals. The letters, 1 for each medication, noted that tramadol, an opioid, can intensify the effects of other opioids as well as alcohol and illicit drugs that depress the central nervous system. The letters also warned that people with addiction disorders may seek out tramadol and cited the risk of criminal diversion.
Avatar f tn 00am. I never heard of a person sleeping like this, he will get up and go to the bath room but go right back to bed. He has mild parkinson's disease, and sick sinus syndrome with a pacemaker, mild to moderate dementia, and other than that no other problems. No renal failure.
