Hi, I'm 4 weeks pregnant & had high BP before becomiong pregnant. I was on Toprol XL 25 mg once daily. I went to an OB/GYN today who said my BP was still running high and upped my dose to Toprol 50 mg once daily. When I called my pharmacist, he said he did not think Toprol was the best thing to take for BP during pregnancy to ask for something safer. My questions are: Is it safe to take Toprol during pregnancy? If not, what BP medicine should I ask my OB/GYN to put me on?

My blood pressure runs around 91/60 and my pulse rate at 50 is this to low is this why I might feel sluggish and tired with no energy. I take medicine for tachycardia 50 mg p/day of toprol xl.

They switched me to Carvedilol (Coreg) for a while, before taking me off that as well. But I did not have high blood pressure, which can be dangerous if untreated. I had much less side effects on that Beta Blocker (the Coreg), but it's still a beta blocker. And even so, it might not be the best one for you. I think toprol, of all the betas probably has the most side effects. Keep pushing your docs, there are other beta blockers with less side effects.

Does anyone take medication for high blood pressure and is pregnant? If so, could you please tell me what you take and how successful it is? My dr. just prescribed me an ACE inhibitor that has a big ole warning about death to fetus. I am not pregnant, but my husband and I have been trying. We put our trying on hold for a few months, but would like to resume soon and we aren't super careful with protection now... leave it to God.

Can the toprol XL dose be increased without running my blood pressure down too low. How high can it be raised safely. Also would magnesium supplement and potassium help this condtion? Are there any effects that hormones like cortisol or testosterone to the heart arrhythmias or PVCs.Stress seems to make it worse. IT just seems like there is something that is triggering this. In regard to the Toprol XL, my blood pressure had become a bit too high, so my GP put me on Toprol about a year ago. Also, I have what feels like "skipped beats," which turned out to be ectopic heartbeats (found out after doing a holter monitor) and the Toprol really helps a great deal in cutting those down as well. My blood pressure was still spiking after I got on the Toprol (started out at 25mg daily) and they doubled it. I still sometimes have spikes even now.

After doing a stress test and telling me I had no heart problems, he took me off of it cold turkey. I was off of it for 48 hours and the whole time my blood pressure was high and pulse never went below 120. I would imagine that your blood pressure is good and not high. If you do not have to take beta blockers that would be good. Your doctor knows best and if you cut the dose to half and have symptoms let your doctor know right away.

I then e mailed the makers of toprol xl - and they confirmed toprol xl can cause ringing of the ears as a known side effect. I also checked DIovan and its listed as well - Due to this , I guess the next best thing to do is see my Doctor and complain to get off the medications or switch them. thanks too for info on h.b.p and how it can cause ringing in the ears, when its too high .. I recheck and check my b.p everyday 3 to 4 times daily- when medicatated its down to normal levels.

But, it was all there on paper, all the tests showed something wrong, but they didn't know what.
