I have been on this combination for 6+ years and doing pretty well with them. In May 2008 I was started on Toprol XL 25 mg. It worked for my blood pressure and lowered it but it also made my depression worse and I finally went to my doctor to get off of them. I am now weaning off of the Toprol XL. I am on the second day of 12.5mg and I can't tell you how bad I have felt all day. Extreme anxiety and jittery. I CANNOT wait for this drug to be out of my system.

(for nothing at all ) Im dead sure its the medications, I did re-check side effect listings for toprol xl - and found out of 10 sites for side effects, 8 listed ringing of the ears for toprol xl. I then e mailed the makers of toprol xl - and they confirmed toprol xl can cause ringing of the ears as a known side effect. I also checked DIovan and its listed as well - Due to this , I guess the next best thing to do is see my Doctor and complain to get off the medications or switch them.

Hi, Everyone. My EP switched me from Sotalol (160 mg daily) to Toprol XL (25 mg daily). His instructions were to stop taking Sotalol (no weaning) and start taking Toprol. It was a HUGE leap of faith for me as I have tried to not obsess about this. Today was my first day. I'm doing fine, but want to know if anyone else has made the same switch and faired well. Thanks!

I know for sure the switch to generic caused me all of the problems because I have been back on the Brand name TOPROL XL 50 mg for 3 days and I am VERY happy to say I feel WONDERFUL and I have my life back! Beta Blockers have always worked for me (been on them for at least 20 years), but this generic stuff is horrible! The people who make the generics have no idea how they reak havok on people with arrhythmias, I was MISERABLE and couldn't figure it out. I lost 3 months of my life.

I am now on toprol XL 50mg once a day. My blood pressure is running 120/71 now. when the PVC are happening I am dizzy and cannot think straight. I dont know how I can just live with this when I feel so flush and cannot function. Seems like 1/3 less pulses means 30 % less oxygen carrying RBC are circulating. It seems debilitating to me. Can the toprol XL dose be increased without running my blood pressure down too low. How high can it be raised safely.

Yes, I've worn a Holter for 24 hours just this past week, and it showed my average pulse at 57 with a very few arrhythmias over the 24 hour period. My doctor is happy with my lower heart rate (ie., 57) and I'm not happy with ED. Ostensibly I've been taking Toprol XL for my BP which is now running @104/75 to 120/79. I have had a recent (this month) physical from my PCP and my PSA is 1.0, with testosterone at 770... so prostate doesn't appear to be a problem.

I am wondering if you are uneasy about taking digoxin. If so, I would ask you cardio if you can get by with just the TOPROL XL. Digoxin, xanax, toprol xl, and lisinoprol seems like a lot of stuff to be taking. I am a runner and only take TOPROL XL 12.5mg. This knocks out my extra beats and really slows my heart down. A little seems to go a long way for me.

Hi there again, I posted about the switch to generic Metoprolol from brand Toprol back in March. Just a thought, I wonder if when they switched you back to the Brand Toprol...did they put you back on Toprol "XL". It's long acting. The generic "metoprolol" Succinate ER did not stay in my system like the Toprol XL, something about the binding properties that didn't let it last the full 24 hours. Taking the generic was like taking nothing at all for me.

I have taken 50 mgs of toprol XL for 12-13 years. It is a very safe and a good medication in my opinion. The XL means that it has an Extended Life .. in other words one pill is supposed work for at least 24 hours i think... but anyway... I dont know why the doc would say just use it when your rate is fast.. if you took one a day ....your heart rate should stay pretty regular Id think.. but Im not a doctor... I dont really know about taking it occassionally... doesnt make alot of sense to me..

My understanding is that metoprolol succinate is an extended release formuation that substitutes directly for Toprol XL. But ask your doc or a pharmacist to make sure. I'm off of the drug entirely now, so I don't worry with it anymore.

what is the best way to wean off ,of toprol xl beta blocker medication. iv been on it for 2yrs now and I dont like its effects at all. been to 2 doctors and they refused to take me off it ? or change it to another medication. I was put on this med for palpitations that come and go. and high blood pressure that wont drop down easy at times! my ekg tests over the years have been normal and had stress tests done , again normal ? why then toprol xl ??

5 years - the high dose is 200mg top end. for toprol xl - dont know how anyone can take it at that dose ! Doctors give a beta blocker for palpatations in most cases. however some give ccb's like verapamil as they too can control palps. I myself am doing a study on palpaitions - causes and how to control them. and or stop them totaly! with or without medications. I think it would be wise, if your b.

A prescription for Toprol XL 12.5 mg issued. Should I take it considering it is a beta-blocker and reduces the heart rate?

Dear Di: I have taken toprol xl for about 12 years and have not had a problem with it.. The XL stands for extended life.. it is not all released at once in your system..So I would say the reason you cant take it just when you have a problem is that your body does not get the full effect immediately.. You have to take it and build it up as I understand it.. dunno not a dr...but thats the way Ive always understood it.. basically its a very safe medication to take... hope this helps.. .

My blood pressure runs around 91/60 and my pulse rate at 50 is this to low is this why I might feel sluggish and tired with no energy. I take medicine for tachycardia 50 mg p/day of toprol xl.

You can get off the Toprol - its not easy - weening slow works the best your side effects are pretty normal of toprol - I took toprol xl for about 6.5 years - long term useage ! I hated it - have to say it was the worst beta blocker iv taken in my life ! and I would never take it or anything like it again ! if you get help from Doctor in weening off it , expect to be put on another drug after your off the toprol - for h.b.p. ccb or ?

The cardiologist kept me on the Toprol XL 25 mg, then increased it to 50 mg daily for the tachycardia, but that was making it too low. The cardiologists then switched me back to Toprol XL 25 mg daily.

I take 100mg of Toprol XL at 630 pm every day & have for about a year. However, this time isn't working out for me anymore & I'd like to change it to early morning around 11am or maybe 12pm. HI I just read your post. I was taking Toprol xl for over a year for sinus tach. My pharmacy switched me to the generic brand. 2 weeks later I started getting skipped beats (PVC I presume). I had never had them before. Went to the cardio and he didn't think it could be the generic brand, but switched me back to Toprol. It has been almost a month and I am still getting pvc's. I do believe it was the generic. If we don't complain, then no one will know.
