I have taken 50 mgs of toprol XL for 12-13 years. It is a very safe and a good medication in my opinion. The XL means that it has an Extended Life .. in other words one pill is supposed work for at least 24 hours i think... but anyway... I dont know why the doc would say just use it when your rate is fast.. if you took one a day ....your heart rate should stay pretty regular Id think.. but Im not a doctor... I dont really know about taking it occassionally... doesnt make alot of sense to me..
I take 200 mg of toprol xl (metoprolo er), 100 morning, 100 night. My tables can be broken in half to make a 50 mg dose, which I have also used. I'd guess your 50 mg toprol xl can be split in half to give you a 25 mg tablet. I'm not suggesting what dose you should use, just saying I think you have a way to take 25 mg accurately if that's what is needed.
I take the med to slow down my HR, driven by AFig. When in sinus I was taking 100 mg and had a rest HR of about 60.
Toprol XL is a slow release medication designed to deliver dose over 24 hour time period and it takes a week or so for the blood level to stabilize to achieve effect. It shouldn't make any difference when you take it as long as it is the same time each day. Have you discussed this problem with your doctor..perhaps a lower dosage or try another beta blocker. I take 100 mg/day and don't notice any side effects, but drug response is variable.
I am surprised that your doctor has not upped the dosage of toprol. You are taking a low dose. I was on toprol for alittle while, and it did help me. I was also on Sotalol for a few years (combined with Cardizem) and that helped me also. In regard to V-fib and sotalol, I really haven't heard of that. I have heard of v-tach a very low possibality when on sotalol, but not v-fib. I would recommend you trying the sotalol. When I was first put on it, I was monitored in the hospital for 3 days.
Since they are in the same family of drugs, you really shouldn't have any side effects. I went off propanol onto Toprol XL, both beta blockers with no issues at all. The problem may be in the dosage or even the fact it's a generic. I find the generic not to be as effective as the brand but perhaps that's just me. I suggest you call the doctor or pharmacist. You are on a very low dose. I take 50mg of Toprol XL twice daily and that does not totally keep the SVT under control.
I have been on this combination for 6+ years and doing pretty well with them. In May 2008 I was started on Toprol XL 25 mg. It worked for my blood pressure and lowered it but it also made my depression worse and I finally went to my doctor to get off of them. I am now weaning off of the Toprol XL. I am on the second day of 12.5mg and I can't tell you how bad I have felt all day. Extreme anxiety and jittery. I CANNOT wait for this drug to be out of my system.
I have frequent PVC's (often with bigeminy) and I also have lots of reflux problems. I have been getting a lot more PVC's the past couple of weeks. I switched from Toprol XL to generic Metoprolol, and I I don't know if that has had any affect. I have also had increased reflux issues during this time. I am getting more PVC's and bigeminy than normal and am noticing it most when I lean forward, especailly while eating. Does this sound like the PVC's are coming from reflux?
I switched from Toprol xl to Metropolol tart about 2-3 months ago and since then one of my ankles, has swollen up and it is very painful to walk on. Even after being off of it, overnight, there is no relief. The swelling has been constant for the whole 2 months. Has anybody else had this kind of side effect? I am going to try going back to the name brand Toprol xl, to see if this helps, before I have a MRI done of my ankle.

a long while ago (years) bbc news reported the u.k medical asso , had found beta blockers caused cholesterol to build up in most people who took it. so they limited the use of beta blockers - they also reported that due to adverse side effects , beta blockers would be in limited useage in the u.k.
Well, in my case it seems to be keeping my heart rate between 70-90 bpm. I take 360 mg daily of the cardizem cd. I tried to withdraw from it. I took diovan hct and metoprolol after I withdrew from the cardizem cd but after 24 hours my heart rate was up to 110 bpm. my bp was normal but none of the other meds would bring my heart rate down. I took my regular dosage of the cardizem cd and my heart rate came back down to normal.
I've just been prescribed 25 mg Toprol xl for hypertension after giving 20mg liprinosil & 12.5 mg HCTZ a try for a month with not quite optimal results. Hi, Everyone. My EP switched me from Sotalol (160 mg daily) to Toprol XL (25 mg daily). His instructions were to stop taking Sotalol (no weaning) and start taking Toprol. It was a HUGE leap of faith for me as I have tried to not obsess about this. Today was my first day. I'm doing fine, but want to know if anyone else has made the same switch and faired well. Thanks!
My pharmacacy switched my "Toprol XL 50 mg" to a Generic one called "Metoprolol Succinate ER 50 mg" (manufactured by Sandoz) in December 2007. I have been on some form of Beta Blockers for years and I thought nothing of it. Within a week I was at my eye doctor because my left eye went from 20/20 to 20/60 and was so blurry that I felt like I had suntan lotion or something in it. Since then I have been to so many doctors because things just kept getting worse.
I just discovered this after 3 months of total misery, 7 different doctors, multiple tests, 1 hospitalization, 16 pound weight loss, almost lost my job, etc., etc., etc.. I want to know if this will have permanent effects on my body and heart and will I ever be the same again. I still don't feel 100% and have been back on the brand TOPROL XL for 9 days now.
I am now on toprol XL 50mg once a day. My blood pressure is running 120/71 now.
when the PVC are happening I am dizzy and cannot think straight. I dont know how I can just live with this when I feel so flush and cannot function. Seems like 1/3 less pulses means 30 % less oxygen carrying RBC are circulating. It seems debilitating to me. Can the toprol XL dose be increased without running my blood pressure down too low. How high can it be raised safely.
I started on Toprol in December and they got more frequent. The dosage was raised in February. They became a little less intense throughout the month and finally almost completely disappeared a few weeks ago. I knew better to celebrate and I was right. THEY'RE BACK!!! Ugh is all I can say.

m @210 (still overweight) and on low dosages of Lisinopril (10mg), Toprol XL (25mg), and a diuretic (37.5). Over the past 4 weeks, I've experienced some morning sluggishness and ED. It's not a sudden onset; I've been very cold some nights at bedtime, had sporatic ED... and I walk 5 miles a day four or more times a week... so up to now, no one has been surprised about a pulse of 60. Only now my pulse is often @ 50 and occasionally in the mid to upper 40's.
I am wondering if you are uneasy about taking digoxin. If so, I would ask you cardio if you can get by with just the TOPROL XL. Digoxin, xanax, toprol xl, and lisinoprol seems like a lot of stuff to be taking.
I am a runner and only take TOPROL XL 12.5mg. This knocks out my extra beats and really slows my heart down. A little seems to go a long way for me.
