I have seen infantile spasms while working on a pediatric unit. It is a serious seizure disorder that often causes cognitive/developmental delays. Doctors often down-play the severity of this disease, but the majority of the children that I have seen with this end up needing some for of long-term care. Several antiepileptic drugs and a hormonal therapy can be used to treat infantile spasms and valproate is tried as first line drug. Sometimes doctors start withv igabatrin (Sabril) which is often used as the initial therapy because it is relatively safe (especially for short-term use) and effective. If vigabatrin does not control the seizures in 3 or 4 days, adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) is usually used next. ACTH stops seizures in more than half of children with infantile spasms.

Hi, my son had infantile spasms which started at approx 3 months old, his eyes would squint and roll up, not fully but as if he was straining, both arms would raise up at the same time, this typically happened on waking or before sleep, I was told for weeks it wasnt anything serious or it was colic.. Greetings. My daughter Emma was diagnosed at 4 months with Infantile spasms and resolved after two days on Acthar Gel. She continued treatment for 3 weeks 40 ml injections, tolerated acthar well and until recently was asymptomatic. Her diagnosis was cryptogenic IS.
Recently she started doing a new movement. She just spent 4 days at all children's and her Veeg was normal, her Contrast MRI including the basil ganglia was normal, her reflux test was negative.
How does Rolaids or tums help with the tingling sensations caused by taking topiramate?
I am currently on Keppra and Topiramate and have just been told my latest tests are showing major kidney damage from the topiramate. I have been on these two meds since 2002. I have to admit, reading all this is very scary. NO Other Meds have worked to control my seizures ! PERIOD!! Plus I have severe Migraines and Short term memory is almost gone in a matter of seconds. What is a girl to do?

You can call the pharmacist who filled your prescription. Often they are better able to answer these types of questions than your doctor because they have access to all the databases available that contain information about drug interactions and so on. They are also much easier to get a hold of than most doctors.
I'm day 5 into taking Topiramate 25mg at night for migraine prevention. My migraine is a daily pressure headache at the base of my skull. I have Chiari malformation type 1 but neurosurgeon says I don't need surgery, thankfully. He and my neurologist advised i try Topiramate as Amitriptyline didn't suit me (made me suicidal) and my asthma prevents them trying me on beta blockers.
I saw a response about what was referred to as benign infantile seizures. My neice has seizures that started at about 2 months old. My sister was told that she would probably grow out of it by the age of 6 months. She is now 2 and a half years old. The description below that I saw on this site sounds like what she is going through:

I was going to a neurologist that specialized in migraines and she gave me Topiramate which totally took away the vertigo and double vision. I get a very slight bit but not the kind that knocks you over now and only a few seconds. I was also told to go to an ENT to rule out Meniers disease and they checked my hearing and looked in my ear and did a CT to rule out a tumor behind the ear called acoustic neuroma. They were all negative. If positive for the Meniers they give you water pills.
He has recently given me numerous trial medication to see if my current state and headaches would improve including apo-acetazolamide (250 mg) and ratio-topiramate (25mg). With acetazolamide not working, and topiramate worsening my state. After being on topiramate for 3 days, I had a general feeling of confusion, disorientation, trouble with my memory, and trouble concentrating.
I am not sure if anyone can help me out with this but I have a friend that is on Topamax (Topiramate) for seizures and she just found out she is 7 weeks pregnant. She had been pregnant before but had a miscarriage. She is very scared because she can’t find any information on this medication to tell her if or if not this medication will hurt the baby. She has seen the OB/GYN and they told her they are not sure and she needs to speak with her Neurologists.
However, I was diagnosed with silent migraine or migraine equivalent by my neuro. I was given Topiramate and Maxalt. The Maxalt did absolutely nothing and the Topiramate put me through two weeks of constant dizziness and vertigo not to mention a couple of panic attacks. I quit the Topiramate and had severe withdrawal symptoms that put me in the E.R. Blood work, urinalysis, chest xray, and head CT w/out contrast all checked out fine.
125mcg levythyroxin( for hypothyroidism), 150 mg Trazedone (to help me sleep), 50 mg topiramate 2x per day (to prevent my almost daily migraines - only have been on this treatment for a month now), (& when needed 40mg relpax for my breakthrough migraines).
Have recently begun seeing tracers upon waking up. Triple vision of things and tracers. Iam a life long sufferer of migraines. I have been in and out of hospitals for my migraines.
There is a strong history of atopy in the family. At this point infantile eczema is still a likely differential. The family history of dermatitis and the way you described the skin condition may still suggest that this is so. In infants the cheek seems to be the most common area involved. Infantile eczema may have variable appearances .They do not have a definite characteristic. So ,this is still a likely differential here.
I suggest you seek second opinion with another dermatologist .
Topamax (Topiramate) is not a weight loss medication; I'm surprised you'd find a doctor to prescribe it for that. I take it daily, for peripheral neuropathy. I've been on it for about 2 yrs and it's done nothing to help with weight loss. Of course, the dosage has a lot to do with it... what dosage are you on?
