I, initially, gained 30 lbs in about 3 months when my thyroid began to fail, in spite of a physically demanding job, extra daily exercise and very healthy low calorie diet. I held at that - give or take a few lbs for several years. Last year, my neurologist put me on gabapentin for my peripheral neuropathy pain and within a week I gained another 10 lbs!!

the problem with us having BP that if we substitute one med for another is only to alter the side effects to another set of side effects. I can't remember one drug with no side effects. As to the valproate it gives weight gain and sorry but it's known to cause ovarian cyst which can be unwanted for girls. As to Topamax i don't know.

I was diagnosed with cluster headaches when I was 15 and after being on every kind of muscle relaxer under the sun with them not working I gave up and learned to deal with the headaches. Ever since I was put on Extavia I have been having horrible headaches and I really don't know if the DMD is the cause of the worsening or not but ibuprofen was not cutting it anymore.

I am now on 150mg twice a day and the only side effects are tingling in my hands when I get cold or hot, and I am loosing weight. Both are common side effects and the weight lose is a good thing for me.

My doctor has now taken me off the Avanza at night and prescribed 15mg Reductil to take with the Effexor in an effort to perk me up a bit and help with the weight. I only noticed a small drop in weight loss, because I was already at a desired weight to begin with and I try not to lose weight as for me, losing weight would be unhealthy. If I find myself losing weight, I try to counteract it... so, for me, the weight loss was minima (5 to 10 pounds at the most). But, I have had friends who have lost quite a bit of weight on topamax. However, I was diagnosed with silent migraine or migraine equivalent by my neuro. I was given Topiramate and Maxalt. The Maxalt did absolutely nothing and the Topiramate put me through two weeks of constant dizziness and vertigo not to mention a couple of panic attacks. I quit the Topiramate and had severe withdrawal symptoms that put me in the E.R. Blood work, urinalysis, chest xray, and head CT w/out contrast all checked out fine.

Lyrica works better than Neurontin, but scaredmom330 is right about the weight gain. I had the same problem and had to quit taking both. I packed on the pounds and wasn't happy because I had just spent hundreds of dollars at Weight Watchers to lose 25lbs only to watch that money go down the toilet. There are a couple other alternatives that are just as effective. One is Topamax, but you have to be at a high dose- at least 150-200mg. That is what I am at and what I take. It helps a lot.

It may also make you lose weight but they will probably give you amitriptyline as well which makes you gain weight and increases your appetite. I have been on this and it has helped a lot. I also get stomach pain and vomiting with my migraines so you may have a variant like I do. I don't know what part of California you live in but UCLA has some really good migriane specialists as does San Diego . But if you can't come down here look for one in your area it is worth it.

Hi. My son is 15 yo and has recently been prescribed Topiramate 50mg Daily preventive use for Classic Migraine HA and "added bonus to decrease mood swings." Amongst many other concerns I have, I am concerned with remarks of weight loss. He is already very thin with a very good appetite. How much weight loss can I expect and does anyone have experience with the mood swings issue?

t help you if your taking medication for your seizures due to me having a relative that has them. It is not safe do to take both birth control and Topiramate due to them mixing up. Topiramate would make the birth control less useful , so it'll be just a regular pill your taking, it won't protect you due to the Topiramate. Hopefully this helps.

I am a 36 year young female and was told I have a right parietal meningeoma of 4mm. It is supposed to be in my frontal lobe. About a week later an EEG was done and indicated sharp discharges in both hemispheres of my brain.
