Anyway, my neurologist is treating me currently with 25mg Nortriptyline and 25mg Topamax at night. They have helped (more so the Topamax). The first week and a half I noticed absolutely no side effects of the Topamax. Today I have some slight hand trembling and also felt like my speech wasn't right. (Like I couldn't think of the right word).
The side effects are still better than the migraines.
My 15 year old daughter was started on topiramate for migraines, 25mg at bedtime. She has only taken 2 doses and is already complaining of feeling like she is in a "fog", is having trouble recalling names and certain words, and feels like her brain is moving very slowly. Her pupils are also dilated. Her doctor said that these are "normal" side effects and "should" go away in a few weeks.
I am currently on Keppra and Topiramate and have just been told my latest tests are showing major kidney damage from the topiramate. I have been on these two meds since 2002. I have to admit, reading all this is very scary. NO Other Meds have worked to control my seizures ! PERIOD!! Plus I have severe Migraines and Short term memory is almost gone in a matter of seconds. What is a girl to do?

the problem with us having BP that if we substitute one med for another is only to alter the side effects to another set of side effects. I can't remember one drug with no side effects. As to the valproate it gives weight gain and sorry but it's known to cause ovarian cyst which can be unwanted for girls. As to Topamax i don't know.
I didn't "jump to conclusions without doing research"... as I noted, I've been taking topamax (topiramate) for a couple of years and I've looked at the side effects more than once. I'm well aware that weight loss is a side effect and many people who use it for other things do lose weight on it; however, it's not "often" actually given, solely as a weight loss aid, due to other possible adverse side effects, such as loss of eye sight as well as others.
Ive taken this for about a year now and its been SUCH a lifesaver. It prevents migraines.
There are many side effects that can occur with topiramate. You should be seen by an Eye MD ophthalmologist and discuss with your neurologist.
Just an idea if she keeps getting the run around and having people say they can't find any info on the drug/side effects, maybe you should cut and paste what I wrote to a word document and print it out so she can carry it with her. I got it from the FDA website. If a layman has access to this info I'm sure an MD would and if not, she can share the print out and ask what they think then.
But, now the eye shaking and the increased pressure is scaring me. Is this likely side effects from the Topiramate? I have also noticed that when my eye is shaking that sometimes I also feel a shaking sensation in the back of my head, like almost like my brain is shaking just in the back near the neck. Sound weird? Hard to explain. It's not the same sensation I feel with vertigo. I can't get an appt w/the eye dr until next month...they are booked.
I know this question is old but Topiramate only effects estrogen based birth controls ( and it can effect them greatly, I wouldn’t trust your dr who put you on them...they should know better). You need to be on a progesterone based birth control, like the ‘mini-pill’, an iud, the shot, or an implant. These won’t be effected! I’m on trokendi (Topiramate) and am having to find a new form of bc now because it’s messing with my pills!
I have chronic migraine so I have been on topiramate several times but every time I got on I remembered how awful the side effects were and why I decided to go off in the first place, (besides it did absolutely nothing to help my migraines) and I lost A LOT of hair too. it would seriously come out in clumps in the shower, we would have to vacuum every day because there would be so much hair on the carpet. I looked it up online and found many others losing their hair from Topamax.
However, I was diagnosed with silent migraine or migraine equivalent by my neuro. I was given Topiramate and Maxalt. The Maxalt did absolutely nothing and the Topiramate put me through two weeks of constant dizziness and vertigo not to mention a couple of panic attacks. I quit the Topiramate and had severe withdrawal symptoms that put me in the E.R. Blood work, urinalysis, chest xray, and head CT w/out contrast all checked out fine.
See this list of side effects. It can cause speech and body pain. But weakness is a different matter I think. So I think you should report this to the doctor. It makes you tired for sure. I am on Topamax XR. I can't concentrate, dry mouth, dry eyes, fatigue, Hard to pull words out. I initially had severe fatigue that got better after 2-3 weeks. Also had bad tingling in the fingers or hands and feet. That mostly goes away with time.

I had my first migraine when I was 12 and they became chronic and literally everyday after two car accidents. (Rear end and head on). I am soon going to b getting my nerves on my c3-6 burned to help with the headaches and neck pain. I'm only 23 yrs old. I had to quit my career (cosmetologist) I loved it and right before my migrianes randomly became daily I had an offer to become a redken color artist and do hair in big time hair shows up on stage with many famous hairstylist.
Topamax did nothing for my pain and I was one of the few people who had one of the more bizarre side effects. I first noticed my hands and feet going numb. With the next increase my face went numb and my tongue felt like a block of dried wood. It can also interfere with taste in some people. I can understand why - everything I put in my mouth tasted like metal including water. On the other hand, I've heard from people who never had a problem with it and it worked very well for them.
Also I get atypical migraines which act like MS effecting the left side of my body. I go blind and my left side gets weak. Sometimes it is hard to sort out since heat brings them on like heat makes MS symptoms worse. The difference is as my migraine clears up the symptoms clear up and the blindness is not like a MS eye symptom.
