The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a notification alerting physicians who prescribe topiramate, and their patients, to the risk of vision loss (blindness). Acute myopia and secondary angle closure glaucoma, in a small subset of patients who take topiramate regularly, may cause transient (reversible), or permanent, loss of vision. The symptoms, which typically begin in the first month of use, include blurred vision and eye pain.
I am currently on Keppra and Topiramate and have just been told my latest tests are showing major kidney damage from the topiramate. I have been on these two meds since 2002. I have to admit, reading all this is very scary. NO Other Meds have worked to control my seizures ! PERIOD!! Plus I have severe Migraines and Short term memory is almost gone in a matter of seconds. What is a girl to do?

I was diagnosed in 2002 with seizures but all the professionals that have seen me still cannot tell me what kinds, I have tons of MRI's, eegs, ekgs, Cardio grams, and more and still they have all come back normal. To this day I am on topiramate twice a day to control whatever spells happen. Just last year I was driving at 3:20am in the morning and I had tunnel vision because I was having an attack, it started off with the sharp pains in my head, tremors, and so on.
He was taken off a few years back because of the memory loss. He has great long-term memory but cannot remember what he had for dinner an hour before. When he was one, he had his first “episode.” Initially, it was thought to be epilepsy. After some testing and monitoring, that was ruled out and then diagnosed with migraines. Being a migraine sufferer myself, I doubt that that is his condition. He wakes up okay and a couple of hours into his day, he loses his “battery” charge.
He has recently given me numerous trial medication to see if my current state and headaches would improve including apo-acetazolamide (250 mg) and ratio-topiramate (25mg). With acetazolamide not working, and topiramate worsening my state. After being on topiramate for 3 days, I had a general feeling of confusion, disorientation, trouble with my memory, and trouble concentrating.

The reason you were prescribed the medications was mood swings and migraines. Do not take the side effect of topiramate that is weight loss to be the aim in using the medication.
Are your symptoms of migraine and mood swings better after taking the medications?
Carry on regular exercises to help you lose weight and plan your diet schedule accordingly.
Consult your neurologist before you stop taking any medication or even change its dose.

Just getting off the gaba, caused an immediate 10 lb loss... He started me out at 50 mg Topiramate (25 in the morning and 25 at night), but it wasn't nearly enough, so within a couple months, he increased the dosage to 100 mg (50 morning and 50 at night). That helped for a while, but within a few months, it was no longer enough, so he increased my dosage to 200 mg (100 morning and 100 at night)... I can't get, either, my pcp or neuro to go any higher...
Topiramate has some minor side effects of headaches confusion and memory loss. However, you have noted that her symptoms have been present even before topiramate use. Prozac may explain the tinntus however,this is a very rare side effect of the drug.Some physicians may opt stopping the drug for a few days to see if the unwanted symptoms disappear with the cessation of the medications.
Postmenopausal state. The hot flushes and headaches may be explained by this.
However, I was diagnosed with silent migraine or migraine equivalent by my neuro. I was given Topiramate and Maxalt. The Maxalt did absolutely nothing and the Topiramate put me through two weeks of constant dizziness and vertigo not to mention a couple of panic attacks. I quit the Topiramate and had severe withdrawal symptoms that put me in the E.R. Blood work, urinalysis, chest xray, and head CT w/out contrast all checked out fine.
hi, i am 33 also and a mother of 2 daughters 6yrs and 2yrs and have a terrible memory. i forget things on a daily basis. like my husband asks me to post something and i either forget to bring it with me or i put it in the car , drive to wherever and come back home still with it!! i meet people say from former work place or school, and i have no idea who they are. i dont remember much from childhood, and if reminded i only vaugly (sp?) remember.

Vicki gave you some good advice about speaking with our Dr. The memory loss and confusion is very understandable taking ativan and going through wd. actually the ativan should be tapered. it is notorious for memory loss complete wipe out. usually through drinking with them but if you are dehydrated and coming off opiates it is very probable. Congratulations on getting clean and learning about your addiction and the meds that feed it. Take good care of yourself.
I am willing to lose some of my memory fro the past in order to better enjoy and plan my future. I consider most memory loss as a cognitive thing and it is definitely a physiological and psychological thing. Bipolar plays a part but it would take me all night to explain why but a lot of it is nature vs nurture.
Some patients may have problems in mixing up words for objects or can have trouble understanding or taking part in a conversation. Prevention in what concerns memory loss is whatsoever limited. Sudden memory loss cannot be prevented but patients who experience the symptoms of memory loss due to aging may keep their brain cells healthy and active with different exercises and dietary supplements.

She does have some memory, like she knows who me and my sister are and what she does for work. Another symptom is that she says her body is soar, like she lifted a bunch of weights.
We are looking for any type of input/advise. Her doctors have been doing every test and scan. However, they are not coming up with any answers. Please help us, we don't know what else to do. She cannot be left alone because she starts to freak out not know what she is suppose to be doing.
