Topamax vs amitriptyline

Common Questions and Answers about Topamax vs amitriptyline

topamax

Avatar n tn I was on Amitriptyline-150mg and Topamax 100mg for at least a year for headaches. Within the last three months I was put on Lexapro 10mg and Allerx PE also for my headaches. My headaches are beginning to become under control with steroid injections and I am about to have sinus surgery. My concern is that in the past year I have gained 35lbs. I am a very active person who works out and also watches what I eat. I don't know what to do.
1759292 tn?1313064590 I've taken topamax, amitriptyline, depakote, neurotin, and loritab. The topamax didn't help and in fact made me feel worse. I stayed sick while I was on it and the dr took me off of it. Later on I discovered it is sulfa based. I am allergic to sulfa. Apparently either my dr didn't know it was made from sulfa...or didn't care. The amitriptyline never helped either and it made my neurogenic bladder worse. I literally could not pee at all by myself when I was on it.
Avatar f tn I have been suffering with severe migraines with aura (blurred vision in right eye, numbness in right side of face upto a week after headache has gone) I was informed last week the a blood test I had 2 years ago showed antiphospholipid antibodies (mine were 28 and was told they should be between 0 and 19) I have been told to take asprin each day and 30mg amitriptyline. I am trying to find out if this is hereditary and is it something I have always had or something that has just happened?
Avatar f tn t have any luck with this med of the other which was Topamax so my DR switch both. She took me off amitriptyline completely and is weening me off of the topamax slowly before adding in Depakote. Hopefully this will work. My question is since she started this I have had leg aches ( not cramps or burning ). Just aches like they are tired. This was before I started the Depakote.
1810386 tn?1405549577 I was prescribe amitriptyline with topamax for migraines but I give tramadol by a different doctor in Thailand, so after I stop taking amitriptyline when I researched on the web that there was an interaction.
Avatar f tn Current list of meds Topiramate (topamax) 50mg 1 tablet 2 times daily, Amitriptyline 100mg 1 tablet at bedtime, Cyclobenzaprine (flexeril) 10mg 1 tablet at bedtime, and Butalbital/APAP/Caffeine (fioricet) 1 tablet to 2 tablets every 4 to 6 hours as needed. And my ENT has me on Diazepam 2mg 1 tablet 3 times daily. I'm wondering if it is the Topamax, or the combination of meds, or the Chiari? I guess I'll have to play phone tag with the NL office today and see what they think.
Avatar f tn I have tried tons of different medicines..propranolol, Amitriptyline, topamax, Cymbalta, Lamotrigine, Olanzapine, Tegretol, along with about 20 other ones.. those are the ones I can think of at the moment.

768044 tn?1294223436 I am currently taking topamax. Before topamax I tried valproic acid and before that I tried amitriptyline. On the topamax my migraines are currently happening still 15+ a month. Hence wanting to try something else too... When I asked my neurologist about the botox, he said that I couldn't mix the topamax and botox treatments. I hadn't heard this before. He said that in the clinical trials, the people who were on a comination of treatments showed worse results.
Avatar f tn Beginning to wonder if it actually is migraines, but then it disappeared for a year instantly on the topamax, and then the topamax has made me feel just as bad again over a year later?! I've literally no idea where to turn, I had a lot of stress in the year where I was 'cured' and didn't feel like this once so can't see how it could be that. Seems the topamax reset me to being ill.
1125820 tn?1265284446 Amitriptyline is a first-line preventative that has been proven to work very well. You might want to give Amitriptyline a try. If Amitriptyline has too many side-effects, you may want to try Nortriptyline. You did mention that you have already tried an anticonvulsant, Topamax, but the other often prescribed anticonvulsant is Divalproex sodium/sodium valproate. In fact, Divalproex sodium/sodium valproate has been shown more effective than Topamax in trials.

Avatar m tn I seem to have a lot of bouts where I just burst into tears and feel like its all too much. I am currently on 150 mg of amitriptyline at the moment which I have been taken for the last couple of months on that dosage with no results. There was one break in my spell of headaches for about a week when i first took amitriptyline last summer. I was only on about 40-50 mg and I was headache free and felt like my old self again.
1868815 tn?1412541757 Hydrocodone, Oxycodone, Flexril, and then some. The nasal sprays I stop taking because of blood pressure was being low.
Avatar f tn as such opiates come with a bunch of other side-effects and stuff... so, it really comes down to, how much the quality of life will be improved vs. all of the side-effects that the patient will have to deal with. Now, something you didn't mention in the message was actual acute migraine medication... have you tried that for these pains... since you called them migraines? Migraine medication is called triptans. I suggest zomig nasal spray... or maxalt quick dissolve wafers.
Avatar f tn I was diagnosed with basilar ( ? ) and tension type migraines when I was a teenager. I am now a 38 year old woman and I take 50 mg of topamax & 25 mg of Amitriptyline every night for prevention. Recently I was diagnosed with a severe sinus infection and it has set of tremendous migraines right between my eyes! I am slurring my words and having difficulty with speech, not to mention a little comprehension problem sometimes.
