Common Questions and Answers about Topamax used for

topamax

Avatar f tn is anyone else on these two? I was recently diagnosed with Bi-polar disorder and the doctor put me on lexapro and topamax. I have now heard horror stories about topamax and I don't want to take it. I want to know some alternatives.
Avatar f tn I used to take Topamax for nerver pain, it was the only anti-seizure med that really worked well for the pain, and I had three attacks of kidney stones before I found out it was the Topamax causing them. I had to stop taking it, but was wondering if anyone else ever had this problem. I did a little research on it and in a small percentage of people it actually does do this, but my urologist only knew of one other person who took Topamax and had kidney stones.
Avatar f tn It could be those that had a hair loss issue also had a thyroid issue and assumed it was the topamax......????
237152 tn?1206651036 There are several meds that were originally made for seizures and now are used for pain management. I forget the names of them right now but my wife is on one that works well for her, but didn't help me at all. Try it and see, is all I can say.
Avatar f tn I have been off Topamax for approx. 8 months and was wondering if I began to take Topamax again would it help with weight loss or once it has leveled off it will no longer aid in weight loss? I currently take Maxalt for headaches only as needed so the Topamax was only used as an anti-seizure med. Please let me know so that I can discuss this with my neurologist about adding Topamax back into my daily routine. Thank you, any help you could give would be wonderful.
214901 tn?1227567555 Okay, so has anyone that has been Rx'd Topamax for headaches, actually gotten crushing headaches about 1-2 hours after taking it? I am trying hard to wait it out and work through my dosage increases but this is just insane! Thanks!
Avatar m tn I would ask for an alternative medicine. Topamax causes hair loss which I have experienced first hand. I found out that that is one of the main side effects and wish I hadn't taken it. I would look on the internet for medications that treat migraines and look at all of the side effects. I have found I have to be proactive and do my research and ask the doctor about a specific medication.

Avatar n tn Yes, Blondie, I used Topamax once and the same happened to me. The only medication that help me is a cocktail of 2 aspirins, 2 Tylenol and 2 Motrin 800mg, if I catch it at the beginning. I f is too late,Imitrex 100mg works for me, specially the injection, pills are prone to take effect a bit later, but the injection is inmediate .
1202354 tn?1267655734 I am on Topamax for my migrains and for weightloss, well I am taking Geodon as well for depression, my question is.... If I am taking geodon will the Geodon which can cause mild weight gain counter act the weight loss with the topamax??
1831920 tn?1320857757 I took topamax before and it made me feel weird, but Celexa i'm not sure about all medications are sort of a trial and error thing, kinda like mascaras lol . You have to find the one that works for you.
Avatar f tn I had periorbital migraines and was placed on Topamax, technically an anti-seizure but also great for migraine/headache control and mood stabilization in bipolar disorder. That for a while was the only thing that worked for me. It can have a sedative and appetite suppressant effect. I was also shortly on a low dose of Elavil for migraines. Carefull with that one, take only the amount prescribed.
Avatar f tn My doctor prescribes me loritab 10 and topamax. I have not started the topamax because he says that I have to take it everday for the rest of my life and stopping it quickly can cause anurisms. The headaches are more severe and come on very quickly now. Should I be concerned?
Avatar n tn I have been on 200mg of topamax for 5-6 months now. They worked inredibly well for my migraines and I am grateful for the medication. In the last couple of months I started to notice some hair loss. At first it was not that bad, the pros of the medication outweighed the cons, but now my hair has started to fall out in chunks. I used to have very long thick curly hair. When I brush my hair it comes out in huge chunks...It used to take me an hour 1/2 to straighten my hair.
Avatar n tn Topamax is used for a lot of things it isn't necessarily labeled for. It's also used for treatment of nerve-related pain. Docs love to give it to patients with spine pain because it's not a narcotic. I know topamax has helped people with pain, but I wasn't one of them. I got every side effect on the fine-print enclosure, including a wooden tongue and numb, nearly paralyzed extremeties. Hadn't even titrated up to a "therapeutic" dose yet.
Avatar f tn I am not a doctor, but I am familiar with this medication, and I find it very odd for this paticular drug to be used for headpain. Because of the nature of this medication, I would not think it would settle a headache. If you are already not sleeping this drug will not help you sleep.
Avatar f tn Topiramate (brand name Topamax) is an anticonvulsant (antiepilepsy) drug. It is now being used for multiple off label purposes. ... one of them being neuropathic pain. I found this on the Topamax website: "To achieve best results, Topamax should be taken for 2 to 3 months and then its effectiveness can be determined." I do believe that is more true in other situations then in neuropathic pain. I have had ppl tell me that they noted a difference within a week.
Avatar m tn I have been advised to take Celebrex or Topamax for headaches. Which treats headaches/migraines better? Which has had more success?
Avatar m tn Some of the common side effects of topiramate that are seen when it is used as a preventive therapy for migraine are tiredness, mood swings, anxiety, insomnia, depression, pins and needles sensation and difficulty with language. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Topiramate The trembling of hand could be because of increased anxiety and difficulty in speech due to trouble with language. Hope this helps!
681148 tn?1437661591 So, topamax alone was not the only answer for me. But, I do believe that topamax has prevented the chronic daily headache I used to have. I do not have a chronic daily headache anymore, I used to have a non-stop headache and now, on the topamax, I have many pain-free moments and I only have to deal with a LOT of acute migraines, usually at least one migraine a day still. So, I can't really say if the topamax has helped with my chronic migraines or not...
Avatar f tn Topamax is used to prevent migraine. It will not stop a migraine that's already occurring. It is not a pain medication. You can read about it at Topamax.com.
Avatar f tn ll give you my opinion and input. Personally, I take Topamax for bingeing and purging and it really, really helps me. However, I would not recommend it if you have a urges to restrict, or have struggled with restricting or anorexia in the past. Also, I can really relate to where you are right now with everything. I've been there, and I feel for you. It's a rough place to be. Your anxiety seems to be pretty high. Have you ever taken anything for anxiety that has helped you?
1655289 tn?1326042889 Topamax does tend to cause weight loss, but trust me, this is not the way you want to lose weight. Topamax (I was taking it for bipolar) first of all did nothing for my moods. I was back in the hospital a few months after first being prescribed this, along with seroquel and ativan for panic and anxiety. That's not what makes this medicine so undesirable though. With each dose increase, I had numbness in my legs and arms. This could continue for as long as 2 weeks after a dose increase.
