Topamax thyroid

Common Questions and Answers about Topamax thyroid

topamax

Avatar f tn I have experienced the same! 6 months on topamax for migraine pain. Topamax caused seizures and thyroid problems plus numerous other smaller issues that compound to complete life altering issues. I cannot find a doctor in my network that will address this. They will only prescribe more drugs for the symptoms. They are incredibly uneducated in this next generation of doctors, only knowing how to prescribe drugs.
Avatar f tn About 1.5 yrs now I have been on Topamax. Also around that time, my thyroid started acting up. I started losing my hair, cold hands and feet, feeling very tired, bad memory etc.. Now my symptoms have escalated. My memory is to the point where I can’t even remember simple words. I am depressed all the time and can’t get out of bed during the day. Then I can’t sleep at night. I'm having a hard time separating the side affects from the Topamax and the thyroid, which got me thinking.
Avatar n tn your doc should have checked your thyroid befor putting u on that drug because it could have been the cause of your headaced. did u check your thyroid before getting on the drug? thyroid gland can cause problems like headache and hair loss and other symptoms.
Avatar f tn It could be those that had a hair loss issue also had a thyroid issue and assumed it was the topamax......????
Avatar n tn I was taking Topamax, but it started my period up extremely heavy and painful. I do have Fibroid tumors in my uterus. Do you think it was the cause of it and if so do you know of something else I can go on to help with weight loss?
Avatar n tn When I read posting on Topamax, people start having hair loss, fatigue, cold feet, etc.. then they go off Topamax. I wish they would check their Thyroid levels first. But I guess there really isn't a point since they are going off the medicine and the side affects should go away. I'm one of those "get to the bottom of things" kind of people. If I was a Dr. I would be running those tests because I would want to know if that’s why people’s hair was falling out.
Avatar f tn I am having my thyroid labs done also, since I have thyroid disease as well. My traumatic event was my PREVIOUS DOCTOR gave me a steroid shot, that supressed my thyroid hormone, while I was taking thyroid medication, made my body like having double doses, caused me to have shortness of breath for two weeks and chest pains and SHE said it was in MY head! Thank goodness for other doctors in my life to see this, well in the middle of the crisis is when various aches started, which my Endo.
Avatar n tn I started out on 2-25mg topamax a day and was losing weight my dr put me on just 1-50mg now and am gaining weight like crazy,is there a reason for this change that I should be aware or have checked
Avatar m tn Apparently, that was thyroid related. Now the thyroid is stable, hair loss stopped, then started again when I went on the topamax. I hope it stops soon.
Avatar m tn Would like to come off lyrica in favour of topamax .how to cope with pain as it will take 6 weeks to build up to 150mg topamax?i presume I must stop taking lyrica at the outset?
Avatar f tn I have suffered from migraines since my late 20's. I am now 49. I have tried any and every migrained med, some work, some don't. My doctor has just suggested topamax. Has anyone taken this? Does it work? I am also hypothyroid and take 200mcg of synthroid, will there be issues taking these two meds together? I read that one of the side effects of topamax is weight loss. This I wouldnt mind as Ive put on weight due to my hypothyroid. But, the biggest thing would not have these headaches.
Avatar m tn I on keppra, dalitin, and topamax to control seizures but now I have thyroid problems do you think is the seizures causing my thyroid problems or is the medicine ?

Avatar n tn What dose did you start with at the beginning? My neurologist wants me to try Trokendi first at a dosage of 25mg daily. It's new but really is Topamax in an extended release form. It's suppose to give less side effects because it's suppose to be consistent in your blood stream. I'm a bit nervous cause it's a seizure medication. I'm wondering if it would be better to try 25 mg Topamax and break in half to start. I'm very sensitive to medications.
1968463 tn?1374757813 I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism after taking Topamax for the headaches before surgery. Coincidentally, my thyroid levels would raise and lower as my Topamax doses would raise and lower (as we experimented with finding the correct dose). I had discussed the possibility of the Topamax causing the thyroid disease with my doctor, neurologist, and even pharmacist.
Avatar f tn My sister had thyroid cancer, niece has goiter, aunt died of throat cancer and brother has throat cancer. I just had blood work because suddenly in June I developed a temple pressure headache. The doctor put me on 25 mg of topamax and I had already been on Prozax 20 mg for 12 years. My eyes, nose, and everything else is dry to the point of I had to rush to the eye doctor (had extremely dry eye), nose sores that bleed, and now my hair is falling out.
Avatar m tn So now I have to get back on the Topamax. But I hear that Topamax is terrible and it is the only one so far that works for me for mixed episodes. I get depressed and then I will feel fine and then off and on. That is not too fun to live like that. But right now about two months ago I had the liver biopsy, and it showed stage 2 and then stage 3 for bridging fibrosis. I was treated twice with intereferon. The first time the interferon was in the 90's for one year and did not work.
1033165 tn?1309435416 What help is there to stop this now. Increase topamax or what? Help these hurt and makes it very hard to deal with going to work and family life. Family doctor is doing lab work on my in about 3 wks for this when he rechecks my synthroid levels. But that can seem so far away.
Avatar n tn I am so confused I just saw a neurologist for my migraines and he prescribed Topamax. When I read the info that went with it and looked up info on line it said something about interacting with asthma meds and meds for the urinary tract. I have asthma and take flovent and xopenex I also have interstitial cystitis so therefore I take Elmiron. I have no idea if the doctor read my list of meds or not. But I do not want to take this if there is going to be an interaction.
1415174 tn?1453243103 The neurologist said I may be able to get off the Topamax because the vertigo may be due to the thyroid does that sound right? Will I eventually be able to just go back to my usual Sumatriptan and be taking synthroid instead and this will control the vertigo?
489786 tn?1255692879 I have had migraine headaches for most of my life and have taken everything at one time or another. What works best for me is 50mg of topamax daily. Even taking the topamax I get "break through" headaches. I've taken many of the triptans and had good luck with all except Imitrex (got terrible rebound headaches!!!). Excedrin migraine, if I take it right away, works OK now that I take the topamax daily. I hope you get some relief soon.
Avatar f tn Recently I have been gaining a whole lot of weight, that is not normal for me because I have always been on the slim side. I do not think its because of eating because I havent been eating any more than I ever did. Does this sound like a thyroid problem to you? I've already had thyroid tests run and they came back normal. Could I still have a thyroid problem and it not be showing???
Avatar n tn I began taking topamax recently to try and help me lose weight. I wanted to see if anyone else had any good/bad experiences with it? I know one usually takes it for headaches, but I don't. I started taking it a month ago to get it in my system, now I'm working out everyday moderately (exercise bike, dumbbells)and changed my eating habits cutting out pb, and chips which were my main downfall. Don't drink soda, alcohol or do drugs. I am on anxiety medicine.
Avatar n tn Please google Topamax side effects or Topamax reviews and you will see many people with a lot of the same symptoms as you. Good luck to you and God Bless.

470964 tn?1240246255 I still have trouble with fatigue, maybe a side effect of the Topamax, but doc is checking my thyroid and liver enzymes just to make sure everything checks out. Right now, I'm not on Wellbutrin. My doc and I think I have Seasonal Affective Disorder. We are looking into starting Wellbutrin in October if I need to and continuing through March. I just hated the numbness of the Zoloft. If I don't need Wellbutrin in the fall, I'll stay off of it.
975514 tn?1324997938 He said that what I described to him was a rare symptom that he only usually hears that from women who suffer from thyroid disorders and that I should get my thyroid checked out. When I left his office I was a little puzzled. Anyone have experience with this? I am also taking a migraine medication called Topamax. Could this be kick starting some issues I may be predisposed to perhaps???
