Topamax side effects long term

Common Questions and Answers about Topamax side effects long term

topamax

I am concerned about long term side effects but I am glad to read about those that have been on it for 6+ years and are doing okay so there's hope for me! Best of luck to you all.
Does anyone know how long topamax withdrawal side effects last? I had to get off, rather quickly, because I developed tremor, was suicidal (tried 2x), violently angry, depressed, etc. On topamax for migraines and panic disorder, 400mg/day for about 5 years. Been off 14 weeks: experiencing mood swings, anger "attacks", insomnia, tremor, hair loss, depression, hot flashes (didn't even have those during menopause!). Though these are decreasing, I'm still experiencing them.
I am quite worried that I take the meds then as soon as I stop taking Topamax, that all these horrible symptoms come back full force and in effect we have 'wasted time'... the neuro said Topamax had the least side effects in comparison to beta blockers and other antidepressants. I have been referred for MRI and will be speaking to her again within the next few months (hopefully!).
My wife tried topamax for headaches, she could not tolerate it. She felt as if she was dazed. She felt like for lack of a better way to say it, like a ghost...like everything was passing her by and she wasn't really present. She stopped it because she could not function on it.
I am mainly taking it for migraines after going off Elavil due to gaining so much weight while on it, so I am looking forward to the weight loss side effects. Some side effects of Topamax I have noticed are occaisional tingling, mainly of fingers, fatigue, and soda pop that contains sugar tasting horrible. Diet pepsi however has been unaffected for me. The one side effect that concerns me which I have never seen mentioned is feeling extremely dehydrated.
You are not alone, I too suffer from extreme exhaustion and lots of long term side effects. I agree that it's hard to fight the system but you have to keep trying! Keep checking with different doctors...........at least that's what I'm doing, it just is NOT normal for an HCV SVR to experience this much fatigue (there must be something else wrong). You sound like a very caring man and she is lucky to have you. My best to you and your wife.

I take 250mg twice a day and by temp never drops, never has. Because I am on so may meds my docs have taught me to be very aware of the side effercts etc. Topamax can cause low grade fevers, sweating, anxiety, cramping etc. Has any of your symtoms started after to Topamax? and if so have the doctors run a Topamax level. Another issue is sometime there are problems with the name brand and the generic.
My doctor increased the dose gradually. I have had very few side effects. ANY drug can cause side effects and should be used with caution and discussed with your doctor. This is where a doctor/patient relationship is extremely important. The only side effect that I have experienced is slight fatigue and confusion when my dosage was increased--this went away once my body adjusted to the medication. It has helped my migraine headaches a lot.
My concern is with long term use and side effects of Neurontin (mid-forties male, 170 lbs). Can you please enlighten me regarding this question? Thank you in advance.
I'm on 100mg of Topamax twice a day. And I am wondering what kind of long term effects this medications can have on someone? I'm only 19, and I take it for daily migraines. I know Benzodiazepine has a bad stomach side effect, and with Topamax, I was wondering if that would happen with taking this high of a dose.
I tried the others and the side effects were intolerable - so agree about the side effects. It is a shame that just removing the pin(s) did not help... have they thought about botox? I know my doc considered that for me for a while but it would have effected my eye, so it was not an option.
All of the symptoms you describe are consistent with the use of Tegretol especially in the early stages. As your body becomes acustomed to it, these side effects should dissipate.
Hmm..I've not experienced any horrible side effects at all from the Topamax. That's interesting? Were you taking the Pristiq before you began Topamax again? I'm sorry you're experiencing these things.
I take topamax for migraines too - I just started it only two weeks ago, so I can't say anything about the long term effects of it. My neurologist cautioned me that soda would taste weird beforehand but being a young college student, I kinda figure that I can handle a few odd side effects if the medicine that causes them takes away the pain that keeps me from my studies. To answer your question, YES.
the problem with us having BP that if we substitute one med for another is only to alter the side effects to another set of side effects. I can't remember one drug with no side effects. As to the valproate it gives weight gain and sorry but it's known to cause ovarian cyst which can be unwanted for girls. As to Topamax i don't know.
What did the savella side effects do to some people i hear they are horrible?
I went without anything but OTC stuff and mild exercise for a month to get clean, and I liked where that was going, and after feeling these side effects from Topamax, well, I've made up my mind to try like hell to do this drug free. I can't handle anymore of the pharmaceuticals.
As far as the benzos go, they are all potentially addicting, but a lot of us with anxiety disorders have to accept that we may have to be on them long term. So far the Topamax has been a little wierd but not scary. It has made my stomach feel a little off, but not nauseous. I'm still hungry, but half way thru my food it's easy for me to be done, where as before I would eat every last crumb.
I also get the weird usual side effects of trouble with word finding and what not but I kind of get a kick out of those side effects, for the most part I really like Topamax, it has really helped me as long as I am careful with it but it can really pack a wallop.
I've read all the dosing advice and short and long term side effects of clenbuterol. I'm trying to find out if you take Clen for just 4-6 weeks to get cut fat/increase muscle and don't want to ever take it again - will you automatically gain the weight back if you're continuing to workout and eat a low-carb diet?
I havent had a soda in 5 weeks, and as far as the side effects go. Remember the side effects are possible side effects. The could happen to some, all or none. Its the chance we all take to get well.
i did not know this was one of the side effects of Topamax and the only way i found out was by going on the web , i think we should get told more about this side effect of topamax it's not nice seeing your hair washing away every time you want to wash your hair. I've started to take a multivitamin and omega3 oil to see if this helps i also read somewhere on another fourm "can't find it again" that selenium based shampoo helps so i might try that also...
Anxiety festers to a life-threatening level, and my short-term memory is now shot, but my long-term memory has actually increased sixfold over the years. My heart pounds often, but I am actually able to run mile after mile and I lift weights. I just recovered from a relapse...but every single time I binge for weeks and weeks at a time taking 16-32 at a time, about 1-3 times a day. I feel as if my mind is no longer the way a human mind should be.
I have been prescribed Flexeril for over a year, as a muscle relaxant for long term back and neck pain... I was told it was a 'safe' drug, and not to worry about it - it was not addicting. Now, after taking it for this long, I have re-read the patient information packet, and see that it is only for short term use, and I cannot find information on how to titrate off. I get migraine headaches whenever I stop taking it for any length of time, as well as other symptoms...
I am a former migraine sufferer. I had been put on Topamax and thought the side-effects to be unbearable at the time. Hair-loss was not a concern for me, though. Yes, I am a woman. With hair. Anyway, I fasted for 11 days, a naturopathic way to detoxify the body, and I don't experience a migraine but one every couple of months. Now I am on it for another reason: mood stabilizing. I will admit I want to lose weight.
But the RLS is driving me insane. HOW can I stop this? And when will I start to feel better. Can long term sub users who have gone through withdrawal please help me? I was always told the withdrawal would be very mild, and this is a miracle drug. I will say, my life and habits have changed. I have no desire to use any pills at the moment, and I don't expect that to change. I was abusing hydros after 2 shoulder surgeries.
I have done my best to warm people about the sight threatening side effects from Topamax, but this last week I have seen the worst case scenario up close and personal. This patient was a 65 year-old man on only 25 mg of Topamax a day for headaches. It took us over 8 hours just to get the eye pressure under 50 (which is still about 3 times normal.) He was rapidly losing vision from an attack of acute angle closure glaucoma IN BOTH EYES.
Did you take the Topamax for vertigo? What is Chiari malformation? Thanks for the info on short term side effects. Which side effects did you have? What dose were you on? So did you take Topamax for 3.5 years or how long? I read that pins and needles are common and that you don't sweat with this drug and can get over heated. I guess it sounds like if you don't get acidosis you don't get the kidney stones or Osteoporosis. Did you have a lot of weight loss too?
Any one out there whose child from birth has taken topamax and what are the long term side effects?
