I take the birth control pill Minastrin 24 Fe and for about a month now I have been taking Topamax as a mood stabilizer. I recently had unprotected sex and I read that Topamax may interfere with oral contraceptives. If I still take my birth control pill at the same time everyday, should I be protected from pregnancy?

They (VA neuros) diagnosed me with a seizure disorder. To treat me, they gave me topamax. That has helped with the seizures and the migraines. I occasionally get breakthrough migraines. They had to adjust the topamax a few times though. However over the past 3 years, I have also suffered from stomach palpatations, and I'd get really flush and I'd sweat. And I can't breathe. I also get tingling and numb in my hands and fingers. My primary care drs have told me its anxiety.
Topamax can lower ur csf pressure. But it can also really work well as a headache preventative too. One key is to start at a very low dose and go up very slowly to minimize the side effects. I'm not saying that it is the right med for u, but to talk to ur doc. Ask about backing up and lowering the dose if u want to give it a real shot to help u.
Ive been on carbatrol since 15 im now 27. And I used to take topamax up until my first pregnancy which was @ 23 years old. My neurologist said topamax was too dangerous. So with my first pregnancy i did have a seizure at like 4 weeks and I still kept on taking my medicine (carbatrol) afterwards. All came out fine with baby. Hes now 4 yrs old and now on my second pregnancy at 29 weeks and the baby is very healthy as well.
Hi, I am currently on an increasing dosage of topamax for suspected seizures - although the seizures are very mild and random. I am not the type of person who likes to take medication and I have had a read on a couple of different forums about topamax and there seems to be a lot of negativity surrounding the drug with some pretty scary side effects.
Can anyone enlighten me with some success stories??

I use lithium and lamictal for my mood stabilizers and will stay on them through my pregnancy. The tentative plan is to add topamax after baby for the migraines and an added mood stabilizer boost. I am loving the possible side effect of weight loss as I am overweight, but I would be devastated if I lose my hair. I may have a migraine everday but they're not so bad I would hand over my hair for relief.
It's interesting, because my GP spoke to a neurologist who said not to worry, I didn't need any follow up, and I don't need a c-section, so she doesn't feel that the pregnancy would be high risk. I'm hearing the opposite online, so it's confusing.

The pain kept getting worse and worse so I finally saw a nurse practitioner about 2 months ago and she put me on Topamax. I starting taking it and the headaches slowly dulled if anything and then a new pain started at the base of my skull by the middle of my lower neck. I had to recently stop taking the Topamax because I found out I was pregnant.
The last time I saw the MS neuro he felt that the lesions or spots that he called them were from migraines and my age. I have been on Topamax for the last 8 years (for migraine control). One of my previous neuros tried to stop the Topamax due to my complaints of cog. trouble, but I ended up with daily headaches. Even on the topamax I will have a ophthalmic migraine about once every 3 weeks, but without any resulting headache. I haven't had a migraine headache in several years.
I have suffered from migraines since my late 20's. I am now 49. I have tried any and every migrained med, some work, some don't. My doctor has just suggested topamax. Has anyone taken this? Does it work? I am also hypothyroid and take 200mcg of synthroid, will there be issues taking these two meds together? I read that one of the side effects of topamax is weight loss. This I wouldnt mind as Ive put on weight due to my hypothyroid. But, the biggest thing would not have these headaches.
I was on 50 mg topamax at bedtime and have recently decided to stop (per dr.)I was only on it for 10 days, but had terrible side effects. Since stopping the MEDs. the side effects are crazy! I feel all of this anxiety and I cannot sleep, I have bizarre thoughts and zero appetite. This has been going on since I stopped 2 days ago. Anyone else experience this and more importantly how many days til I feel better???
