Topamax off label use

Common Questions and Answers about Topamax off label use

topamax

Avatar n tn Did your doctor prescribe it to you for this? If not, STOP right now...'experimenting' with prescription medications, which are extremely addictive can NEVER have good outcomes.
Avatar m tn topamax is not an atypical antipsychotic rather an off-label anticonvulsant (antiepilepsy) drug to stabilize BP. Strange one of the side effects is anorexia (loss of appetite). The only drug i know which doesn't cause weight gain is lamotrigine. But aside from it all the AC's, lithium, AP's even AD's cause weight gain. In short all BP drugs increase weight. That's a price we pay. I recall once Oprah had a program for BP and all the guests were rather heavy weight persons.
Avatar n tn s not for pain control, but docs use many things off-label. Have you tried neurontin (gapapentin), the earlier drug from Lyrica? Many tolerate it better, some less. It can also cause weight gain, as will any drug that slows you down -- these drugs are basically GABA, which is the body's relaxant, so when you target that you can gain weight. The medical approach with fibromyalgia is to treat the pain, the natural approach is to build the body up through diet, exercise, meditation, etc.
Avatar m tn Ecspecially with children, anyway, how does phenobarbitol work to stop the pain of a migraine??? At the moment I am only on Topamax and take tramadol for fibromyagia, so I use that for the migraines as well. Triptains give me sever heart palapitations and cause my stomach and colon to bleed so they are not an option??? Any feedback???
Avatar f tn It is perfectly legal for a physician, once a med has been approved by the FDA, to use it for off-label purposes. What isn't legal is for the manufacturer to talk the physician into using it for off-label purposes. So this med might be the best thing for you, and it might be completely inappropriate depending on where the professional got the info from. So you're right to question things, but as I said, that doesn't mean this isn't a good med for you.
Avatar f tn In the prescribing label for Topamax it indicates the possibility of developing kidney stones if this medication is not used with a large water intake. I am running late for work otherwise I would get out my med book and quote it to you, but that's pretty much what it said. I write in nearly every post the importance of a large intake of water while you are taking medication, especially if your list is large like some of us.
3219519 tn?1345993889 It has not been approved for weight loss. Weight loss is a serious side effect of this drug, and hence is often being used off label to help people lose weight. Trial using this drug for weight loss had to be discontinued due to side effects which could become serious such as dizziness, ataxia, vomiting, diarrhea, mood disorders, memory loss, difficulty in concentrating, anemia, dyspnea, loss of libido, and bladder problems. Personally, I would not recommend you to use these pills.
Avatar f tn Topiramate (brand name Topamax) is an anticonvulsant (antiepilepsy) drug. It is now being used for multiple off label purposes. ... one of them being neuropathic pain. I found this on the Topamax website: "To achieve best results, Topamax should be taken for 2 to 3 months and then its effectiveness can be determined." I do believe that is more true in other situations then in neuropathic pain. I have had ppl tell me that they noted a difference within a week.
Avatar f tn You are on a lot of meds. I was like that yrs. ago; way overmedicated and way overweight. I'm now down to 2 antidepressants and 1 mood stabilizer. (I am also a rapid cycler). Everybody is different and responds to medication differently. The best and most all-around useful mood stabilizer for me has been Topamax. It is an anti-convulsant, also indicated for propylaxis of migraines (which I also have). The great side effect, if you're overweight, is WEIGHT LOSS. Be careful, though.
100019 tn?1335919717 For genotype 1 patients who cannot take interferon, the panel recommends sofosbuvir plus the HCV protease inhibitor simeprevir (Olysio), with or without ribavirin, again for 12 weeks. This off-label regimen has not been through full Phase 3 testing, but performed very well in the Phase 2 COSMOS trial.
Avatar f tn They all have reported feeling better daily - this off label approach is a God Send! Now I will finish out the 12 weeks - they will do the viral load test again at that time and then 12 weeks post treatment test again to declare me officially SVR!!! NO HORRIBLE INTERFERON OR RIBAVARIN THIS TIME FOR ME!!
1635208 tn?1300807160 Hi welcome to the Hepatitis C community Olysio per the prescribing information sheet is intended to be used with interferon and Ribavirin. The same applies to Sovaldi. Per prescription they are not used together. However there have been clinical trials using them together "off label" and they have been shown to be highly effective when used together. You can web search for Cosmos clinical trial cohort 1 and cohort 2 to see study results.
633143 tn?1262133535 you see, if we weigh under a certain weight, our bodies may stop functioning properly. So, although you are right, one of the side-effects of Topamax can be weight loss, and it is used off-label as a weight loss medication, if 98lbs is under a healthy weight for your age and height category, then it may not be an appropriate medication for you. Mind you, if the Topamax is working wonders for your migraine/headache pain... it might also be a shame to take you off of it...
874521 tn?1424116797 I am seeing my doc next week to get Off this. I am going to try maybe Cymbalta and Topamax. I have read Good Things about Topamax. My Lower Legs and Hands are both Swollen, and Although it did help with the Nerve Pain. I can't stand feeling like a Blimp. I hope you find Relief, Soon.
Avatar f tn ) If you experience any weight-related side-effects, it will be weight-loss, not weight-gain!
Avatar n tn Are you under the care of a doctor? Typically, Topamax is a medication that you can stop taking safely by being weaned off of it, as opposed to just going "cold turkey". If you are taking a high dose of Topamax, I would definitely recommend checking with your doctor before you make any decision or plan for stopping use of this drug.
Avatar n tn I had been taking Topamax for migrane prevention but it was causing significant memory and thinking problems. I tappered off the Topamax over about 1 1/2 - two weeks. I am now wondering getting off Topamx caused me to have 2 siezures. What do you think?
Avatar f tn and was able to loose some weight (though I was not overweight at that time). I began eating more to try to gain weight. The topamax did level off and the weight began to pile on (other anti-seizure meds were added that could cause weight gain). I have been off Topamax for approx. 8 months and was wondering if I began to take Topamax again would it help with weight loss or once it has leveled off it will no longer aid in weight loss?
Avatar f tn I have taken Topamax on and off for years. It works wonders on my headaches. A couple of thinks I am sure your DR told you , but. . . You need to taper on and off slowly (25 MG) at a time 2 of the side effects are paraesthias (intermittent "pins and needles" in the hands and feet. This was extremely scary for a friend of mine who wasn't told. Make sure you have biannual eye exams. Topamax is known to cause increased eye pressures in some people.
Avatar m tn I am using Pegasys 180mug q/wk as an off label use to treat Polycythemia Vera and it works well.I will have to take this med the rest of my life. I am aware of the short term side effects, but what about long term side effects? What can I expect years from now?
1113735 tn?1273174430 I believe the trials in the US involve mostly G1. Members of this form have experimented with it off-label (not for the prescribed purposes) with mixed results. It may improve the efficacy of interferon. don't know about liver stages or alt, ast. personally if i were to start treatment tomorrow i would add it.
