Common Questions and Answers about Topamax not working

topamax

Avatar n tn I have been seeing a neurologist now since October or so. I am on topamax to control the migraines 50 mg but they are not working at all. I take oxycodone w/ acetaminophen and they help with the pain but I was reading and you said that is not good cause that could cause rebound headaches? I was just wondering if you had any advice for me I am only 24 years old and I can not even get out of bed more than half the time.
4971738 tn?1390565384 Any reviews on topamax? I am takin 200mg for over two month and I have not notice any weight loss!
Avatar f tn Is anyone on here started taking or tried the drug Topamax for their migraines???
Avatar f tn Hi there Dr perscribed me Topamax for my migraines and I am a little nervous to try them. I heard you can also lose weight with this. I quit smoking 4 weeks ago and have put on quite a bit of weight, so was wondering if you can share your experiences and side effects to see if it is worth it.
Avatar f tn I began having seizures as an infant {1956}, they stopped & did not return until the 80's when I began working for the USPS. I have not had another since my disability retirement in 2003. My neurologist has yet to suggest that I stop the medication. I must say I agree with you that she should perhaps not stop taking the medication at all.
Avatar m tn I just started on topamax for 2 days on 25mg for headaches i had headaches for a long time. Im worried about this drug and mixing it with other drugs that i take. Im HIV positive and i take stribld everyday before bed my nero doc wants me to take topamax before bed as well. So im taking both of these pills at the same time and i care about my hiv drugs working without interuptions because the virus will get a chance to mutate. So will topamax interfere with stribld?
Avatar f tn Well over the past 4 years I have been told 5 times that I either had MS or didn't. So recently I went to see a neuro about my constant headaches and while in the ER he told me that I did have MS (since I have brain lesions and spinal fluid was positive.) I have no physical signs of MS except recently I have blurry vision in my left eye alot of the time. I also get headaches if not everyday than every other.
Avatar f tn t do anything for headaches/migraines, I would definitely suggest she bring this up to her doctor at her next appointment. If the medication does not seem to be working after several weeks, it would be up to her to stop it and wait for the next appointment, or continue on it, while waiting to talk to her doctor about it.
Avatar f tn My doctor recently started me on 25mg of Topamax twice daily. I am on day two, with no relieve yet. Can anyone tell me how long it will take to see any difference? Any information would be appreciated.
Avatar n tn Hello! I'm currently on Lamictal but considering changing to Topamax since this drug (topamax) more effectively treats partial seizures and migraines. What is your experience with it?
Avatar f tn My nuero started me at 1 every night for the first week, then 2 every night for the 2nd week, then 3 every night for the 3rd week he was hoping that would get everything under control and we could wing me off of it so I wouldnt be dependent because he says i suffer from tension migraines and just regular headache migraines. WELL ITS NOT WORKING!! my head still hurts!!! how long does it take to work? I have been having headaches for a while now.
1512520 tn?1290258130 I was on on Wellbutrin XL 300mg for 2 years, it worked well for the most part, did not gain any weight but it was ineffective for my anxiety and was not working as much for depression near the end. I started Paxil CR 12.5 mg for 6 months (second time I m trying Paxil), I felt great but 25 lbs crept on and it has made me severely depressed. I am now off Paxil for 1.5 months and my anxiety is coming back, and havent lost any of the weight either.
1558393 tn?1299070031 Hi Tina, I was on TOPAMAX and was not a fan.....first I was not told before hand that there is an adjustment period of at least 2 weeks....and during that time I was a walking zombie.....it was so horrible I went to the Dr at the two week point and asked to be removed from it....that is when I was told it takes at least two weeks for your body to adjust to it.....so I stayed on it.....I was also told it will change your headaches....
Avatar f tn I have a lot of co-workers at a call center who have also tried topamax but say its not usefull and hated the side effects so they stopped.
Avatar m tn I recently jumped from about 25mg/50mg to 100mg a day of topamax. Since then, I have whan my doctor has says is tendonitis in both hands, wrist and middle arms. Strange I think. I have taken a strong anti-inflammatory, and then the steriod pack, heat, ice, etc, etc, rest, arms splints all that for 2 weeks. No change. Still top of hands, top of wrists looks swollen, hurts to bend wrists. Tingling (pins and needles) sensensation.
390338 tn?1206462648 I take vitamin B2 (200 mg 2x day) and magnesium (250 mg 2 x day) as preventatives, both prescribed by my nuero. I have been taking since July 2007. Not sure if they help.. I am also taking Topamax too.. so far I'm up to 75 mg a day. Has the Topamax been helping you? I still have migraines most days. There is a lot of research that both of these vitamins do help.. I will take any added relief I can get! I'm curious why your dr. gave you Frova?
470964 tn?1240246255 About nine months and 2 miscarriages later, I decided that I really needed to be back on anti-depressants, so he put me back on Zoloft 100 mg/day as well as Topamax 50 mg/day for migraines. The Topamax has been working wonders for my migraines, and the Zoloft seemed to be working at first, but lately something doesn't seem right. I am not emotional, like crying, but I'm more angry, which was an issue before the Topamax, but I was able to control it better.
Avatar f tn Hi, my psychiatrist just put me on Wellbutrin, and Topamax as a mood stabilizer. I know that weight loss is associated with both of those, especially the Topamax. I was ok with that, I've been wanting to lose about 30 lbs. anyway. But I'm on low doses of both, so I didn't expect to see much weight loss, if any, and especially not so quickly. My appointment at the psychiatrist was on October 7 and when they had me get on the scale there, it read 131 lbs.
Avatar f tn Hi, I would suggest you to discuss with your doctor if Topamax will be suitable for you. Topamax has proved to be very effective for migraine prophylaxis. Recent studies have shown that Topamax is very effective for reducing the frequency and severity of migraines. http://www.*************.com/migraine/medications/topamax.html http://www.relieve-migraine-headache.com/topamax-migraine.html Hope this helps!
Avatar n tn Don't know anything about Topamax -- it's approved use is for seizures and preventing migraines, not treating them, which suggests it's not for pain control, but docs use many things off-label. Have you tried neurontin (gapapentin), the earlier drug from Lyrica? Many tolerate it better, some less. It can also cause weight gain, as will any drug that slows you down -- these drugs are basically GABA, which is the body's relaxant, so when you target that you can gain weight.
Avatar f tn I have tried to taper off but not working. I take much more than you and have been on it for years. so even more difficult. My doc. just prescribed me lamical to try and get me off of it even though I am not bipolar, but do have some racing thoughts. You can try and taper off, but work with your doctor on that.
Avatar f tn As for the vertigo the topamax seemed to help it some but it didnt help the balance. Now im on 125mg of zonigran. its like topamax but its not working either I could take the name brand topamax but when it went to a non name brand I had bad reactions to it like bad mood swings. I hope you get some answers on whats going on best of luck to you.
Avatar f tn Hi and welcome to the Migraines & Headaches Community. Why did you stop taking Topamax? If you are not going to do what the doctor prescribes there isn't much they can do for you.
Avatar f tn I'm back with another question :-). DS is 11.5 yo, recently diagnosed. He was put on topamax and imitrex for migraines which are supposedly unrelated and are what sent us to the neurologist in the first place. Migraines continue, some tingling in hands and feet, which is likely the topamax. However, today he had a migraine (been on topamax just over three weeks). Once it wore off I took him to school.
Avatar f tn Hi...I have been on Topamax for 2 1/2 years and it doesnt seem to be working anymore. I went to a neurologist and he raised my dose from 100 mg to 125 mg about 3 wks ago. The headaches are still there...everyday, some stronger than others, but EVERYDAY. I also take 450mg wellbutrin. I dont know if I should call the Dr and ask him if I should start taking 150mg or does anyone think its too early to say (3 wks) I take relpax when they get real bad and that works great, but 4 hrs later...
