Topamax getting off

Common Questions and Answers about Topamax getting off

topamax

Avatar f tn You are on a lot of meds. I was like that yrs. ago; way overmedicated and way overweight. I'm now down to 2 antidepressants and 1 mood stabilizer. (I am also a rapid cycler). Everybody is different and responds to medication differently. The best and most all-around useful mood stabilizer for me has been Topamax. It is an anti-convulsant, also indicated for propylaxis of migraines (which I also have). The great side effect, if you're overweight, is WEIGHT LOSS. Be careful, though.
Avatar f tn Can someone tell me the correct way for me to wean off of Topamax? I currently take 100mg twice a day. One in the morning and one at bedtime??? Thanks so much. God bless.
Avatar f tn anyways the questions I am trying to ask is. Do I need to get off of Topamax NOW before trying to conceive or do I stay on it until I find out I am pregnant and then figure out what to do from there regarding my migraines? thank you!
Avatar f tn Jode, Your dosage is on the light side. My wife tapered off Topamax but her symptoms and triggers are different then most. I'd suggest that maybe keep trying it until you get leveled off for a little while at 75mg then if you don't notice any changes then you might want to ask your Doctor to taper off. Be well and God Bless.
424862 tn?1203803456 We were hoping to have children soon, and were told I couldnt get pregnant while on this drug. What happens if we want to start trying for a baby, do I come off Topamax, and the symptoms come back? Or do I stay on it and not try for a baby for a long time???
Avatar n tn I had been taking Topamax for migrane prevention but it was causing significant memory and thinking problems. I tappered off the Topamax over about 1 1/2 - two weeks. I am now wondering getting off Topamx caused me to have 2 siezures. What do you think?
Avatar f tn I have taken Topamax on and off for years. It works wonders on my headaches. A couple of thinks I am sure your DR told you , but. . . You need to taper on and off slowly (25 MG) at a time 2 of the side effects are paraesthias (intermittent "pins and needles" in the hands and feet. This was extremely scary for a friend of mine who wasn't told. Make sure you have biannual eye exams. Topamax is known to cause increased eye pressures in some people.
1558393 tn?1299070031 Any way my great family doctor is slowly taking me off the Keppra. I go back in two weeks and he is going to try Topamax. Does anyone take this? If so does it work with your headaches? Do you have any side effects? Also has any of you been approved for disability for your Chiari? I did not want to quit my job if there was no hope.
214901 tn?1227567555 Hello! Yes, I was taking Topamax for about the last three years or so. I don't remember getting headaches in the beginning. Topamax is also used as an anti-tremor medication but like you, I used it for migraines. My doctor recently told me to stop taking it. I developed five kidney stones(3 in one, 2 in the other). Apparently Topamax can cause kidney stones! I wish my doctors had told me this a few years back!
979826 tn?1389036358 has anyone heard of Zonisamide? i will go on this drug once i come off topamax I've been on topamax forever!
Avatar f tn Hi. I'm bipolar with psychosis and am currently tapering off of ziprasidone 80mg twice daily. I totally dropped my second dose along with lamotrigine, and Lexapro. So right now I am currently taking ziprasidone 80 mg, chantix 1mg, topamax 50mg 3x day, and ropinirole for side effects 1 mg once a day. I can't believe I actually made it through the night last night.
Avatar f tn But no one seems to be looking for any answers. I think maybe the only way to get them to is to go off the Topamax, but since I have 3 kids that depend on me I need to be able to function which I could not do prior to the Topamax. My options are limited due to insurance. Somehow, those of us with similar symptoms have to get together and figure this out so we can get better. I hope it helps to know that you are not alone. Good luck, and please let me know where you are in your journey.
Avatar m tn Has anyone experienced massive hair loss while on steroids? Mine has been falling out since last spring fairly steadily. I started on 40mg of prednisone a day in the beginning of January. Then was put on Topamax about five weeks ago. At that point, my hair started falling out three times more than before. I'm talking my hands are covered every time I wash it, plus there is hair all over the bathroom floor, counter top, etc., by the time I'm done in there.
Avatar f tn I have been put on zonigrine and its like topamax and its doing nothing for me so Im getting off of it. It too can cause kidney stones. Like we need anymore problems. I too pray you get answers.
410475 tn?1262942367 Yes itching all over body I'm so tired I sleep all day I have no energy I have been on topamax 100 mg for 6 month'sbut I'm getting off this medication starting today
Avatar f tn I believe anyone having migraines for more than half the days of a month is considered a possible candidate. I have a friend who has been able to get off the Topamax by getting botox injections. The potential side effects of Topamax are pretty bad - I got most of them, my friend got a hand full of them. But for some people it's a miracle, so who knows .
Avatar n tn The doctor prescribed topamax to me because i have been getting frequent headaches. I have been taking 25mg at bed for the last 4 nights, tonight will be my 5th night. After 7 days I am supposed to increase the dose. Today I started feeling numbing and tingling in my fingers. I never have experienced this before and its been like this for 5 hours. From what I read I think this is a side effect of topamax. Should I stop using it tonight or should I continue with my 5th dose.
Avatar f tn and was able to loose some weight (though I was not overweight at that time). I began eating more to try to gain weight. The topamax did level off and the weight began to pile on (other anti-seizure meds were added that could cause weight gain). I have been off Topamax for approx. 8 months and was wondering if I began to take Topamax again would it help with weight loss or once it has leveled off it will no longer aid in weight loss?
Avatar n tn And sadly, it appears to be permanent, even after getting off of Topamax. My hair stopped falling out, but what I lost has never grown back. My ponytail is almost half as thick as what it used to be. Thankfully, I had a lot of hair to begin with and the loss was all over, so no big bald spots. I do take Biotin now to try & increase my hair growth, but I think it’s only helping me to retain what I have left.
Avatar f tn old female also with a LONG migraine history and I have fibromyalgia. I had to go off the Topamax (the weight loss was great, but the side effects turned me into a depressed zombie). Now I'm on Lyrica, it's not yet approved for migraines but the testing is very promising, and I have had very few headaches in the last 2 months since I switched and those have been mild. I hope and think that probably your symptoms are related to the Topamax also.
Avatar n tn Are you under the care of a doctor? Typically, Topamax is a medication that you can stop taking safely by being weaned off of it, as opposed to just going "cold turkey". If you are taking a high dose of Topamax, I would definitely recommend checking with your doctor before you make any decision or plan for stopping use of this drug.
1655449 tn?1302089876 By the way, you asked about going off Topamax cold turkey. ABSOLUTELY NOT ! Even when you are not taking it to treat seizures, you can *cause* seizures by not tapering off of it. Consult your doctor or pharmacist about how to safely wean yourself off of it.
3547166 tn?1347814000 Has anyone with or without Depression experienced depression symptoms or thoughts of suicide as a side effect of their antiepileptic medication? This happened to me on Topamax. I was weaned off the drug quickly. my doctor is looking for something else. In the meantime I am having daily seizures.
Avatar m tn I have not lost weight on anything else, and since they took me off I have gained like 30 lbs over just a few years. I had to go off of Topamax and put on another med because I was high as a kite on it. Almost hallucinating - looking at the ground and seeing what looked like a sinking quicksand hole, etc. And the side effects did not go away over a couple months of trying so I had to go on something else.
Avatar f tn My doctor prescribes me loritab 10 and topamax. I have not started the topamax because he says that I have to take it everday for the rest of my life and stopping it quickly can cause anurisms. The headaches are more severe and come on very quickly now. Should I be concerned?
Avatar f tn I coughed myself awake this morning, which scared the heck out of me. And now my husband tells me that I've been coughing in my sleep since my NL started me on topamax. Current list of meds Topiramate (topamax) 50mg 1 tablet 2 times daily, Amitriptyline 100mg 1 tablet at bedtime, Cyclobenzaprine (flexeril) 10mg 1 tablet at bedtime, and Butalbital/APAP/Caffeine (fioricet) 1 tablet to 2 tablets every 4 to 6 hours as needed. And my ENT has me on Diazepam 2mg 1 tablet 3 times daily.
Avatar f tn I was building the topamax up and lowering the lamictal down. Now I am just on the topamax. The side affects seem quite scary to me, severe dizziness and very off balance, I am always tired and have tingling in the hands and feet. I seem loss for words and confused. Will these side affects deteriorate over the a certain amount of time? It is difficult when I have to go to work and live everyday life. Please help.
Avatar f tn I have yet to find a better resource for information on the meds I am taking, and always read up on each one before it goes in my system. Anyway, I am getting off track. In the prescribing label for Topamax it indicates the possibility of developing kidney stones if this medication is not used with a large water intake. I am running late for work otherwise I would get out my med book and quote it to you, but that's pretty much what it said.
