Topamax for tmj

Common Questions and Answers about Topamax for tmj

topamax

Avatar m tn m wondering if this could have something to do with my jaw. Does anyone have symptoms like this from TMJ? The only other TMJ symptom I have is that my jaw hinge clicks slightly whenever I open and close it, though I know this is common without TMJ. Or has anyone had any jaw issues that caused pain behind their eye?
Avatar n tn They are using the botox for TMJ as well now ..The heaadaches from tmj are soooooooo close to migraines .
Avatar n tn I had this pretty steadily for 4 weeks, then tapered for a week, then it was gone for a week. I was so relieved. Then I had a migraine and the feeling returned 24 hours later. I do have a history of migraines, and sometimes this feels like I am on the verge of a migraine with this condition. I have tried Mazalt and Relpax and neither really help this current condition. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I am a 36 yo female.
1983417 tn?1326416870 I've suffered from daily horrible intense chronic tension headaches the past 5 months which I believe where due to stress which caused a "flare up" in my tmj so I saw a nuerologist who diagnosed me with chronic tension headaches. The past week I've been taking topamax and an anti-inflamatory which has significantly reduced my pain. However, my head feels sooo weak and weird! I was wondering if this was a normal healing process since I was in pain for so long?
1232362 tn?1333135406 I called, made an appt. The Dr. was my hero. It was TMJ (very serious case) and they made a bite plate for me to wear, and he adjusted my jaw so that little disc snapped back into place and that was 4 years ago and I haven't had a problem, migraine since! So, yes TMJ can cause migraines. The Neuro Docs just don't want to look at that aspect because it' more dental (jaw and teeth) then brain and they're only solution is meds! Hope you find relief.
Avatar f tn It could be those that had a hair loss issue also had a thyroid issue and assumed it was the topamax......????
Avatar f tn I developed vertigo on Christmas night. I was on topamax for 7 days which stopped the Auras and migraines but not the vertigo. I was having too many side effects and had to stop the med. what started as wanting answers for migraines quickly developed into a desperate need to stop the vertigo. I lead an active life with two children in sports. I've minimized my driving but frankly am going crazy with having others drive me around. Does Ménière's cause these type of head tinglings?
1983417 tn?1326416870 I'm 21, was diagnosed with tmj at 17. Had a personalized mouth guard I used every night. As of sept 2011, had a "flare up" everyday horrible facial pain, head pain and pressure, neck pain and weakness, throbbing, saw a tmj "specialist" who said not to wear mouth guard any more so I don't yet said there's nothing he can do for me. Pain increases come Dec, vertigo occurs, chiropractor relieves 85% of it.
Avatar m tn I would ask for an alternative medicine. Topamax causes hair loss which I have experienced first hand. I found out that that is one of the main side effects and wish I hadn't taken it. I would look on the internet for medications that treat migraines and look at all of the side effects. I have found I have to be proactive and do my research and ask the doctor about a specific medication.
390338 tn?1206462648 Yes, I'm taking the Topamax for migraines. I have had them since I was only 12 and I am 42 now. They have increased in frequency with age. Today, we discussed working our way up to 150mg also. I would really rather not so I want to take it slow. What side affects are you feeling at 75mg? I guess the most I am feeling right now is the tingling and numbness in my fingers and toes. Sometimes in my heels. A little in the left side of my face.
Avatar f tn I had periorbital migraines and was placed on Topamax, technically an anti-seizure but also great for migraine/headache control and mood stabilization in bipolar disorder. That for a while was the only thing that worked for me. It can have a sedative and appetite suppressant effect. I was also shortly on a low dose of Elavil for migraines. Carefull with that one, take only the amount prescribed.
Avatar n tn I use to use Botox injections in my temples, jaws (tmj) and back of neck (bad muscle) for my migraines but discontinued, at that time I was put on Topamax for one yr. the migraines increased tremendoulsy and moved from what they had been before. I have been put on a higher dose of Topamax now, I have also tried almost every drug their is for migraines previously to the Botox injections.
Avatar f tn Hi, I'm new to this site. I have learned a lot here but have many questions about headaches. I've had very bad headaches for over a year weekly almost everyday. I think i've tried every med out there and Im now on topamax 3x daily. I tried nerve blocks 3 in 3 months, until the doctor told me that my head couldn't handle anymore steroids. As well as triger point injetions. Again I can't have anymore of those for 6 more months because I've done about 4 in 5 months.
Avatar n tn I started going to the chiro about two weeks ago for my tmj and he said I should have neck adjustments for 2 weeks 3 days a week. So far it hasnt helped my tmj it may have made it worse cause im now streesed about my neck it feels sore and numb going down my back. Was this a proper thing to do for tmj?
1222635 tn?1366396286 we live in alabama..i am assuming that it is not required by law for insurance companies to cover TMJ, as BCBS of AL does not. any help is appreciated. my dentist told me my problem will only deteriorate without treatment and i am at a loss for what to do as we have no money.
Avatar n tn If the patient has an overbite, people with that have a tendency to get TMJ problems. I use a flat-planed splint at night for mine, since I clench at night... it has helped with the migraines some, but I still can get a lot of pain talking extensively.
1655289 tn?1326042889 Topamax does tend to cause weight loss, but trust me, this is not the way you want to lose weight. Topamax (I was taking it for bipolar) first of all did nothing for my moods. I was back in the hospital a few months after first being prescribed this, along with seroquel and ativan for panic and anxiety. That's not what makes this medicine so undesirable though. With each dose increase, I had numbness in my legs and arms. This could continue for as long as 2 weeks after a dose increase.
Avatar m tn I've been using a dental mouthguard at night for the last few years because my dentist said I was grinding my teeth at night. The first one broke, and the second one has a large crack in the same location. I've also had TMJ problems, mainly in the right jaw joint, for many years. A couple years ago these got much worse, and I had more jaw pain and migrane-like headaches.
Avatar f tn I see a specialist in TMJ who tells me my case is very severe and he has been urging me for at least a year to get a full surgical joint surgery with new implants. I have heard awful things about that type of surgery. I feel like I haven't heard anything positive. I know when I see him, he is frustrated because my jaw hardly opens and it sounds like crumbling rocks, no more popping, that was the good ole days. His frustration is that I won't give in to surgery.
Avatar m tn An NSAID is good for inflammation, Anti-Seizure (like Lyrica, Neurontin or Topamax) medications are good for nerve pain. If Lyrica made your fiance too drowsy, Topamax might be a better alternative. This is what I take instead. It's in the same class, but has different side effects. Many people do not get as drowsy. Muscle relaxers can help too. Everyone's cocktail is different, because everyone's reacts differently to medications.
Avatar m tn Hi! I've dealt with TMJ for several years, and it is important to find a doctor who actually treats it! For the first several years I had a maxillofacial surgeon and when i moved I found a dentist who specialized in TMJ. The reason why this is important is that they will understand the need for speciliazed splints to reduce harm to the jaw, and also be able to properly medicate, measure the progress and damage to the joint, and see if surgery(rarely) is needed.
Avatar f tn I've had trismus for over 3 weeks now after having a cracked tooth pulled. This tooth had considerable work done on it and was going to get a crown when the dentist discovered it was cracked all the way down to the root. My jaw was getting very stiff each time work was done. Two days later I had it pulled and got the trismus. I am currently going to both the oral surgeon, and a physical therapist. I can assure you that nothing so far has worked. Would botox?
Avatar f tn I also have suffered from tmj for many many years. At first, I thought I actually had a brain tumor, I was feeling that wierd! I felt like my vision was off center, I had shoulder pain, neck pain. sinus problems, and stuffy itchy ears, and feelings of being off balance. I was told its all in my mind ,but that was back some years ago. I eventually got an ortho who put me on a night guard.. i would grind my teeth so hard at night I cracked the dang thing!
Avatar m tn Also, I bet we all do big yawns now and then--I open my mouth very wide and stretch a bit farther for a moment when the TMJ tension is too high. Accupressure w/ a thumb just above the back jawbone in front of the ear and below the cheek bone feels good. Press the spot firmly a few moments--mine makes crackling noises on that spot when opening my mouth. That spot is probably the muscle the chiropractors are pressing from the inside--it feels similar.
