Common Questions and Answers about Topamax for tension headaches

topamax

Avatar f tn Hi Headaches at the back of the head may have occipital neuralgia, cervicogenic headaches, tension type headaches and migraine headaches as differentials. A scan of the cervical spine will be able to assess if an underlying disorder of the cervical spine may be contributing to the pain. Cervicogenic headaches may also refer pain to the face. Arthritic or musculoskeletal causes have to be ruled out. Occipital neuralgia usually occurs after a mechanical injury to the head or neck.
Avatar f tn I am into my 3rd week of topamax and I am still having bad headaches. My nuero started me at 1 every night for the first week, then 2 every night for the 2nd week, then 3 every night for the 3rd week he was hoping that would get everything under control and we could wing me off of it so I wouldnt be dependent because he says i suffer from tension migraines and just regular headache migraines. WELL ITS NOT WORKING!! my head still hurts!!! how long does it take to work?
Avatar f tn For the last few days I've had a sharp throbbing headaches on the right side of my head. It gets extremely worse when I turn my head to the right or lean forward. I've taken Ibuprofen, tension headache, I've even tried 2 800mg Ibuprofen nothing seems to help. I do have high blood pressure, in which I check often, and is controlled with HCTZ 25mg and a low sodium diet. I'm doing some research to see if I can take care of this problem without going to the doctor.
Avatar m tn I would ask for an alternative medicine. Topamax causes hair loss which I have experienced first hand. I found out that that is one of the main side effects and wish I hadn't taken it. I would look on the internet for medications that treat migraines and look at all of the side effects. I have found I have to be proactive and do my research and ask the doctor about a specific medication.
Avatar f tn My neurologist diagnosed it as chronic tension headaches and were prescribe Topamax that I stopped taking about a year ago. I am very scared something is wrong because I am having nagging headaches starting at the back and working its way behind my eyes. I don't know if its anxiety/stress or if its really something wrong. Should I go get another Ct Scan or MRI? My doctor tells me Im ok its from anxiety and sleep apnea.
618913 tn?1234747600 Hi, I don't know if anyone has any advice. I have had a headaches since last Friday (off and on) They got worse on Wednesday with really bad nausea and I had to go into my neurologist and he gave me an IV treatment. They gave me extra pain meds and nausea meds and said I'd feel like I was punched in the head the next day but that the IV treatment was successful. I felt that way the next day but I still have remnant headaches. Today I'm even sound sensitive.
Avatar f tn these could be one of the chronic severe headaches like migraine, cluster or tension headaches. Observe if you have any associated aura of symptoms like nausea, vomiting, dizziness, photophobia etc. postural record of blood pressure to rule out any autonomic instability needs to be kept. trial of medications for preventing migraines like topamax and to treat them like triptans needs to be allowed. MRI brain is required to rule out tumors or aneurysm.
Avatar f tn My oncologist prescribed Epleptin and Neurexal for me. I have been on this medication for 3 months now and my headaches are not as severe or often as before. I feel great!!! :):):) Please go and see your neurologist and ask him for this medication.
Avatar f tn Hi, Thank you for the question. For persistent headaches, possibilities like migrainous, cluster, tension and refractive errors that need to be evaluated thoroughly with the help of a neurologist here. Migraine like headache can be throbbing, one sided of face & head and preceded by aura (starts with blurred vision). Cluster headache may appear as burning, explosive in nature and tear appears from eyes. Tension headache originates with stress and anxiety disorder.
Avatar f tn The pins and needles is common for Topamax. You may eventually go to 100mg if it is helpful. Most medications can cause rebound headaches. If your migraines are only occassional, ask your Neurologist if you can try Maxalt MLT 10mg. It's fast acting but you will need to observe a strict protocol for usage to prevent rebound headaches. Have you been able to ID your triggers?
Avatar f tn Well i want to start by saying that i am 18 years old and have been suffering with these really bad headaches for about 4 years. I know that everyone get headaches and migraines but when i get them it always seems like something is wrong. I started to go to a neurologist about two years ago but after two visits i stopped going because he was claiming that my headaches/ migraines where related to food i ate which i know is not true.
Avatar f tn I have been taking muscle relaxers, I thought they were helping but I still get horrible headaches about once a week for three to four days. They put me on Topamax, and that was working for two weeks then yesterday I get a headache again. Xrays were normal, MRI of neck show slipped disc and spinal cord slightly rotated. I got Facet shots, which made the neck pain go away but nothing will help the headaches.
Avatar f tn We need to stay in touch. I also have daily chronic headache, same tests as you were normal, have been to 3 neurologists (2 headache certified). Have your doctors accurately defined (to your satisfaction) whether you have migraine or tension or cervicogenic headache? Different preventive medication for migraines may not be effective on tension headaches. I have tried propanolol, which did nothing for me. Ditto for topamax--just made me dizzy, couldn't tolerate it for more than 1 day.
1983417 tn?1326416870 I've suffered from daily horrible intense chronic tension headaches the past 5 months which I believe where due to stress which caused a "flare up" in my tmj so I saw a nuerologist who diagnosed me with chronic tension headaches. The past week I've been taking topamax and an anti-inflamatory which has significantly reduced my pain. However, my head feels sooo weak and weird! I was wondering if this was a normal healing process since I was in pain for so long?
Avatar f tn Well im 18 years old and been having these really bad headaches since i was about 12. Doctors can't figure out what's wrong.I had a mri of the brain, mra of the neck and they all came out clear. I'm taking 2 butal apap 325 caff tab, 1 and a half topamax, 1 and a half trileptal, and one baclofen. My doctor also gave me a soft neck brace to wear while in on the computer and watching tv, but it seems like the brace is making this worse.
1512520 tn?1290258130 My neuro wants to put me on it for recurring tension headaches and I could certainly use the weight loss side effect lol.
536122 tn?1213486475 tension-type headache and cluster headache.. The attacks of pain can be caused by triggering factors such as stress, hormonal changes, and diet. Tension-type headache is the most common and affects up to 75% of headache sufferers. Although it is more common in women, tension-type headache can affect anyone who sustains the same body position for lengthy periods, or individuals prone to anxiety or stress. It is caused by contractions of the neck and shoulders.
Avatar f tn I have been treated for tension headaches and migraines since 2009. I was diagnosed with JME when I was 13. I'm currently on 150 topamax and 500 lamictal for seizures. I have tried antimigraines, analgesics, muscle relaxants, nonsteroidal-anti-inflammatory and steroids, ssnri antidepressants and obviously acetaminophen and aspirin for headaches . I have one every single day but the severity of it varies. Within the past few days I have noticed slight shaking and weakness in my hands.
Avatar f tn hey, i'm with ya on the daily chronic tension headaches! you sound like me. i, too, suffer from migraines (but not nearly as much as i did just a year or few before)....but the biggest trouble i have is with the daily tension headaches. there's a TON of true "migraine" medication out there (i'm currently taking Relpax, works great, doesn't make me nauseous like the imitrex sometimes did).....but not much in the way of meds for true tension headaches.....
Avatar f tn After two months of various symptoms that started with a traumatic event with my PREVIOUS doctor I was diagnosed by a Army neurologist with Fibro. and will have a appt. with a Rhumtd. doctor hopefully in a week for confirmation. Before I got in I just started Topamax for pain I've been having primarily face pain, headaches, aching in upper jaw ( maxillary) but, this was given to me by a PA on a low dose, the neuro. is starting me on nortryptilyn.
Avatar n tn For 5 months now i have been suffering with headaches on the top of my head, allways in the same area,i have no problems with vision..The headache started very badly one morning and i vomited 15 times in 3 hours,i had to rush to the doctors to get a pain killing injection..Since this episode i have moderate headaches everyday, if the pain increases the nausea starts.does anybody have any idea what could be causing this?i am now being sent to a nerologist.
Avatar f tn My doctor prescribed me topamax today. I am already on amitriptylline 30mgs at bedtime for "migraines". I think my headaches are related to the chiari as dr shelat reproduced the pain when he put pressure on my head in a certain way. My current md said there is interaction between amitriptylline and topamax and also compazine which i take as needed.
Avatar n tn Barring that, my personal belief is that namenda and topamax are the best thing going for both migraines and tension headaches as prophylaxis. I took them both together and they helped some. I also usually added in an antidepressant known to suppress headaches (of which there are a few). And I did also take the magnesium supplements with it as has been suggested - still do in fact, along with some other vitamins.
Avatar n tn I had my surgery dec 2008 and was without headaches for two months after surgery. I discontinued pain meds after two weeks after surgery. Headaches returned in Feb 09 from pressure from bending over as before surgery. I may have pushed myself too hard as my father had broken his hip and needed constant lifting. Now it's almost a year later and headaches are continuing usually later in the afternoon early evening. If I lay down flat the HD usually will go away after a few minutes.
