Common Questions and Answers about Topamax for ptsd

topamax

Avatar f tn It could be those that had a hair loss issue also had a thyroid issue and assumed it was the topamax......????
Avatar m tn I would ask for an alternative medicine. Topamax causes hair loss which I have experienced first hand. I found out that that is one of the main side effects and wish I hadn't taken it. I would look on the internet for medications that treat migraines and look at all of the side effects. I have found I have to be proactive and do my research and ask the doctor about a specific medication.
Avatar n tn I had at least 1 seizure (most petit mal) every day for a week. I went in for an EEG and had a grand mal right at the end of the test. It turned out not to be an epileptic seizure. My neuro scheduled me for a long-term video EEG, and then suddenly the seizures stopped... But a new symptom appeared: excruciating leg pain. I couldn't sleep, lay down or hardly walk. Not to mention the fact that since this entire thing started I've had no sense of balance.
Avatar f tn I had periorbital migraines and was placed on Topamax, technically an anti-seizure but also great for migraine/headache control and mood stabilization in bipolar disorder. That for a while was the only thing that worked for me. It can have a sedative and appetite suppressant effect. I was also shortly on a low dose of Elavil for migraines. Carefull with that one, take only the amount prescribed.
Avatar n tn I received a closed head injury many years ago, resulting in one sided weakness ,short-term memory issues, PTSD, severe migraine...enough already...anyway, I have been on several drugs for instance Topamax, Inderal, Lyrica, Xanax at length .Presently, due to some unresolved short-term memory issues I am having some difficulty memorizing, concentrating, and focusing on a required project at my job. Obviously frustrated, we/my doctor has decided to try Ritalin. Have you seen this work before?
1655289 tn?1326042889 Topamax does tend to cause weight loss, but trust me, this is not the way you want to lose weight. Topamax (I was taking it for bipolar) first of all did nothing for my moods. I was back in the hospital a few months after first being prescribed this, along with seroquel and ativan for panic and anxiety. That's not what makes this medicine so undesirable though. With each dose increase, I had numbness in my legs and arms. This could continue for as long as 2 weeks after a dose increase.
Avatar m tn An NSAID is good for inflammation, Anti-Seizure (like Lyrica, Neurontin or Topamax) medications are good for nerve pain. If Lyrica made your fiance too drowsy, Topamax might be a better alternative. This is what I take instead. It's in the same class, but has different side effects. Many people do not get as drowsy. Muscle relaxers can help too. Everyone's cocktail is different, because everyone's reacts differently to medications.
1512520 tn?1290258130 I was on 25mg a day of Topamax for migraines and when i started it I noticed immediately more frequent nose blowing. Then later, diagnosed with a sinus infection, treated with antibiotics, but that didn't stop my nose blowing. My sinus problems just kept getting worse and worse as time went on. I started having constant drainage running down the back of my throat. The drainage was so bad I thought I had strep throat, it made my throat so sore.
1276940 tn?1564515084 s Syndrome (4/22/16) via lip bx. I am on Plaquenil (for the 4th time) and Evoxac and I have been having some other symptoms that have me puzzled. They are.......despite being on Evoxac, I am still having trouble swallowing......sometimes. I am still in the habit of sipping while I am eating/chewing, it seems like it always happens in public too. I have anxiety (social & generalized) so drawing attention to my self is worst.
913054 tn?1242955793 The mechanism of action is unknown. It is used off label for a number of other disorders including migraines, PTSD and for patients with mood and eating disorders. I'm glad you were able to taper off this med without any serious side effects. I have read some of the posts on the net also. Everyone responds differently to medications. Some pp; have no problems with proper tapering, indeed I think that is the majority. A select few seem to have more troublesome symptoms.
Avatar f tn is anyone else on these two? I was recently diagnosed with Bi-polar disorder and the doctor put me on lexapro and topamax. I have now heard horror stories about topamax and I don't want to take it. I want to know some alternatives.
614508 tn?1265281722 Has anyone had any interactions/reactions with the drug Topamax when prescribed for BPII & OCD. My understanding from the drug handout is that it is normally prescribed for migraines, seizures and weight loss. My doc has just increased my dosage to 100mg 3x per day. I have experienced some deterioration in my eyesight however I'm not sure if that's attributed to age (hadn't had my eyes examined in 2 years) or the Topamax which I've been on a lower doze for 6 weeks.
1655449 tn?1302089876 I have been on topamax for migraines for eleven months now and have lost a ton of weight...at first i had same side effects and it was very scary, but they do lessen in time and i find not having as many migraines well worth the first 6 weeks of strange speech, confusion, side pain etc. i make myself drink enough water each day...and with the help of excercise i have lost around 27kgs...definitly dampens my appetite!!.
2932946 tn?1344722012 I also have often had a nagging headache post-surgery (nothing like before, but I'd still rather not have it) and am currently trying Diamox Sequels to reduce my high ICP. I'm on a half-dose now and it seems to help with the headache without causing the unpleasant side effects that the full dose caused. I assume that you've had a repeat MRI to make sure that you don't have a leak, pseudomeningocele, etc.?
Avatar f tn I used to take Topamax for nerver pain, it was the only anti-seizure med that really worked well for the pain, and I had three attacks of kidney stones before I found out it was the Topamax causing them. I had to stop taking it, but was wondering if anyone else ever had this problem. I did a little research on it and in a small percentage of people it actually does do this, but my urologist only knew of one other person who took Topamax and had kidney stones.
Avatar n tn I was just prescribed the drug for frequent migrains and was wondering why and how it causes weight loss? Does it decrease your ap?
Avatar f tn Well sorry been gone awhile, thanks for all the comments. I had an allergic reaction to the topamax so that ended that haha. It caused a red rash all over my body, my throat closed up and I had several panic attacks on it; thought I was having a heart attack. Anyhow, needless to say, they took me off of that med and now I'm just taking the xanax 1mg which works great maybe a little too great if you know what I mean but I'm being careful with it cause I know it is very addictive.
Avatar m tn I am uncertain only the Doctor may be able to answer but I do know that some meds prescribed for anxiety, depression and PTSD can have side effects of Hallucinations, so if you are taking anything check out the dose with the prescribing Doc and ask about changing it ..
1103688 tn?1257894552 First off I think that increasing the Topamax to 100mg if possible would be a good place to start since you have said that the Topamax has greatly reduced the number of severe headaches you get. The normal dose of Topamax for migraine prevention is 100mg, so taking it at the regular dose might greatly improve your situation.
Avatar f tn Yes you can have PTSD and any mental illness for that matter for years and not know it. It's not like you're immediately informed of your condition when you develop any disorder. PTSD can also have some psychotic symptoms, they aren't just exclusive to things like schizophrenia.
Avatar n tn I'm surprised no one's responded to your question as of yet! I hope you're able to find the answers; I'd like to know myself. Just don't sacrifice your 30% - i.e. don't sign any waivers to re-enlist. I repeat ~ do not give up your comp & pen. You said you feel you're no longer entitled to the disability payments!!! Man, don't guilt yourself! Any one that's served and is honorably/general discharched is eligible and deserving of payment!!! Dang!
Avatar f tn I too struggle with feelings like that; I was told the antipsychotic I take for schizophrenia also treats the PTSD and I am currently in therapy but it's a slow start so far but I know and expect it to take a long time. So far we talked about the trauma in my life and my therapist put two and two together with a few things so far that I never even realized before.
Avatar f tn org for more information or just google topamax. My Way Out is mostly for drinkers because topa has shown to be very helpful in that area. The worst side effect for me on topa was feeling extremely irritable. I didn't want to be a mean mom, so I had to go off it. The only other solution for me would be to combine topa with wellbutrin or prozac or something else to curb the anger side effect.
