Topamax for pain relief

Common Questions and Answers about Topamax for pain relief

topamax

Avatar f tn The first thing they need to figure out is if you have nerve pain or muscle pain or both. For muscle pain it would be muscle relaxers like Baclefin or Zanaflex or something similar. For nerve pain in the states they use Gabenpentin which is a seizure medicine or Lyrica or Trileptal. Or sometimes anti depressants such as Amitryptoline. For headaches they use Topamax as a preventative. I take Immitrex for my migraines.
Avatar f tn I find that a warm/hot water bath soothes almost all kinds of pain. If your doctor is already giving medicines you may consider that. There's also the hot water bag/ thermal bag. That helps too.
Avatar n tn I use topamax 125mg daily for preventative therapy. I also use 400mg of B2 daily for preventative therapy. To supplement acute therapy, I use naproxen (a prescription NSAID). As for some suggestions... yeah... what DrNoopurMD said!
324184 tn?1308076203 If your daughter starts topamax, be sure to find a urologist. One of the major side effects of topamax is kidney stones. After taking it for my migraines for two years, I had kidney's full of stones. I have had three operations to rid myself of them and the surgery/recovery is very painful. The neurologist found out that I was in the hospital for a week ( the first time) and no kidding..yelled into the phone.. OH MY GOSH...ITS THE TOPAMAX!
503607 tn?1275671579 She has tried steriods, beta blockers, Cymbalta, Celebrex, Topamax, Nortriptine and pain meds. Nothing has brought relief. Can anyone make any recommendations she is desperate for help. She has seen numerous neurologists and they keep trying the same things. We are on Long Island in NY if anyone has any recommendations for a great doctor.
Avatar f tn I am a 53 yr old female.I have been suffering with neuropathy for about 13 yrs. One dr first diagnosed me with CIDP. My new doctor does not agree because I don't have any signs of weakness in my extremities. My symptoms are feelings similar to what you'd feel when someone scratches their nails down a chalkboard. They started in my left foot and shot up that leg. It has spread up my torso, head, face, and right extremities.
Avatar f tn She takes cymbalta for nerve damage and pain and it helps with a number of things you listed vibrations vertigo etc, is also a anti depressant and it gives you energy. She is also taking neurontin for nerve pain as well as vicodin when it gets really bad. I hope this is some use to you.

The first one diagnosed me with CIDP. but my new dr. does not agree because I don't seem to have any signs of weakness in my extremities. My symptoms are feelings similar to what you'd feel when someone scratches their nails down a chalkboard. They started in my left foot and shot up that leg.
975514 tn?1324997938 If you are interested in tapering off of the Lyrica and utilizing the Topamax alone I would have a talk with your pain doctor about it. The optimum levels for pain are between 150mg and 200mg. I am currently at 175mg. You may be able to taper off the Lyrica and ramp up on the Topamax at the same time and have your pain doctor take over the prescription so that you can get a stronger dosage- 50mg in clinical trials wasn't even strong enough to help migraines. GSDgirl- Fironol???
Avatar f tn Started with headache, nausea, and vomiting. Headache location temple and occipital bone area. Pain was constant throbbing and sometimes stabbing. Light and noise sensitive. On topamax and neurontin. Been in the hospital twice in two weeks. We are currently hospitalized since Monday. Nerve blocks to occipital bones, frontal and temporal region. Some relief, but still pain in temples. Nausea persists.
979826 tn?1389036358 she also prescribed Toradol injections for my horrible days. Surprisingly, it helps ratchet the pain down enough to where I can cope!
Avatar f tn Hello I haven't posted in a while because I have been feeling better with topamax therapy, the headaches have gotten better, but I do have a new symptoms the last couple weeks i wanted to ask if other have experienced. I have intense pressure in my head mostly in the top and front and my temples go numb, both at the same time. Also, along the sides of my head above my ears. It either feels numb or like intense pressure. Its always equal, not one side more than the other.
1380526 tn?1292839385 Anyone else had Lyrica for nerve pain like this? Or has something else helped? It is a horrible pain several times a day...Like bare nerve ends shooting through my face for several minutes at a time!!!!!!
Avatar f tn I took Topamax for awhile trying to stop a "non-stop" headache. The side effects were bad enough for me that it was discontinued. The lack of balance and eye pain I had were what my neurologist decided were reasons to discontinue. The headache pain was as bad on Topamax as it was off Topamax, so it just wasn't the drug for me....
998260 tn?1277731559 It worked at first on the pain, however, after one pill I started to feel different emotionally. I kept taking it for the pain until I felt so bad mentally and physically that I had to stop. I was then put on Diclofenac. Right away I started to feel stressed in my chest and arms. I also began to have trouble with my emotions again. It was also keeping me exhausted. It seems like any type of drug used to take down inflammation is just not the drug for me. You may have a different experience.
Avatar f tn http://imgur.com/l3qvEkI A few years ago I started getting pain in one eye and people kept commenting on my left eye always having a red line it on some days. After a while I really didn't feel right but couldn't explain it to anyone at all, even now I can't really put my finger on it.
Avatar f tn Hi, I would suggest you to discuss with your doctor if Topamax will be suitable for you. Topamax has proved to be very effective for migraine prophylaxis. Recent studies have shown that Topamax is very effective for reducing the frequency and severity of migraines. http://www.*************.com/migraine/medications/topamax.html http://www.relieve-migraine-headache.com/topamax-migraine.html Hope this helps!
Avatar n tn But 2 weeks ago I suffered one of my headaches that always begins in the back of my neck and pounds in my head for several days. I have tried every pain medicines for relief (over the counter, migraine, narcotic) I have tried massage and acupuncture also. Can you recomend something i could try for these headaches?
Avatar f tn I am bipolar, have chronic migraines, and doing IVF. I use lithium and lamictal for my mood stabilizers and will stay on them through my pregnancy. The tentative plan is to add topamax after baby for the migraines and an added mood stabilizer boost. I am loving the possible side effect of weight loss as I am overweight, but I would be devastated if I lose my hair. I may have a migraine everday but they're not so bad I would hand over my hair for relief.
Avatar m tn 25mg increase per week is acceptable to let your body get used to it to avoid confusion or anxiety. I started to feel pain relief of my nerve pain once I hit that dose. I have nerve dysfunction in my spine and I have a numb left foot. It began helping me once I reached that level. The important thing to remember though, is medication management is highly individualized. What works for one person, may not work for another.

Avatar m tn I was on 50 mg topamax at bedtime and have recently decided to stop (per dr.)I was only on it for 10 days, but had terrible side effects. Since stopping the MEDs. the side effects are crazy! I feel all of this anxiety and I cannot sleep, I have bizarre thoughts and zero appetite. This has been going on since I stopped 2 days ago. Anyone else experience this and more importantly how many days til I feel better???
