1088430 tn?1259159773 One of the preventative migraine medications that I am currently taking, Topamax, is often prescribed for neuropathic pain. A friend of mine was completely disabled by neuropathic pain until she began taking topamax and because she takes topamax she can walk and use her hands... so it's pretty amazing stuff for neuropathic pain. So, topamax might be a good choice for you to address both issues of nerve pain and migraine pain.
Avatar m tn It is also indicated to relieve neuropathic pain such as migraine headaches and nerve-related pain. This drug should not be discontinued abruptly after long term use because it can lead to withdrawal syndrome. Most common side effects include dizziness, drowsiness, and swelling of extremities. On the other hand, amitriptyline or Elavil, is a tricyclic antidepressant. It is officially approved as a preventive medication for patients with frequent migraines and chronic fatigue syndrome.
Avatar n tn Gabapentin and Lyrica are used for neuropathic tingling/numbness and pain; Cymbalta is a good one to help headaches plus Imitrex, Relpax, Topamax (migraine meds). I hope this will be of help to you.

485259 tn?1519047026 New research for neuropathic pain. This video interview with Dr. Allan Basbaum discusses the possibility of replacing damaged Gabba cells with new functioning ones, thus virtually eliminating neuropathic pain. This video also provides a good explanation of the different types of pain: acute/chronic/inflammatory/ and neuropathic as well as Trigeminal Neuralgia. Hopeful and informative. http://www.facingfacialpain.org/index.php?
975514 tn?1324997938 If you are interested in tapering off of the Lyrica and utilizing the Topamax alone I would have a talk with your pain doctor about it. The optimum levels for pain are between 150mg and 200mg. I am currently at 175mg. You may be able to taper off the Lyrica and ramp up on the Topamax at the same time and have your pain doctor take over the prescription so that you can get a stronger dosage- 50mg in clinical trials wasn't even strong enough to help migraines. GSDgirl- Fironol???
Avatar m tn Lyrica is still one of the newer ones but works really well. I take Topamax and Lyrica. I take Topamax for headaches and Lyrica for neuropathic pain. My pain is well controlled but they do have their side effects.

Neuronal dysfunction is a prerequisite of neuropathic pain, but it is unclear how the degree of structural and functional neuronal impairment is linked to the intensity of neuropathic pain. What does this study add?
Avatar f tn Hi martint1955, First, I want to welcome you to the PM (Pain Management) Forum and let you know that we are glad you found this Forum. We are all CP (Chronic Pain) Patients that help each other with our own expertise and experiences that we have developed through our own CP Issues. I'm sorry that you are having trouble finding a Doctor to prescribe what you think you need for your pain. From everything that I've read on the patch it is the very same medication that Suboxone is.

874521 tn?1424116797 Yes, I started on Lyrica about 9 mos. ago for my lower back pain & neuropathic pain, HOWEVER, it does work & I like the fact that I'm not taking as highly an addictive pain killer as an opiate, I've already gained 26 pounds! That's having switched from regular to DIET soda & DECREASED my food intake!!! So, be forewarned, you're gonna gain more than a little weight.
Avatar f tn Hi could anyone give me any views on carbamazepine for pain please?
237152 tn?1206651036 topamax should be titrated up meaning tapered up and down
2932946 tn?1344722012 m thankful for that. My doctor just tells me to take Tylenol or ibprofen first then resort to my pain meds if it doesn't go away. But i take up to 4 Tylenol or ibprofen at a time just about twice a day. usually lessens it but doesn't go away. I know its not good to take that much Tylenol, anyone else have any other options that help with their headaches?
372366 tn?1284403873 Hi! We had a little discussion on treating neuropathic pain yesterday on the Discussion called, "Update: Neuropathy" by treebranches. You have room to increase the Lyrica dose, I believe, by quite a bit. Also there are other meds which can be added in to increase the effectiveness of the Lyrica. You might talk to your doctor about adding a low dose of amiltriptyline at night or possibly adding carbamazepine.
Avatar f tn -) There are many options out there for pain relief but you must find the cause of the pain or treatment will fail. So if you took Baclofen thinking it's muscle spasms but it's actually neuropathic pain then you will get no relief. Take Care, Karry.
Avatar m tn Many Heppers experience some neuropathic pain.
Avatar f tn Neurontin (gabapentin) can be an effective treatment for neuropathic pain, but would seem unlikely to have any effect on any other symptoms, such as gray patches, sharpness, or color saturation. As has been repeatedly discussed here, however, it's not something one just starts taking; it is an adjustment process. See the Health Page on treating neuropathic pain.
Avatar f tn I thought it was just because of the pregnancy but i only seem to get these certain symptoms with the pain. I had a CAT scan done back before I was put on Topamax but I am afraid the hospital I went to didn't do the CAT scan done right. They didn't use the contrast dye. Ive had a cat scan done before on my leg so was curious why they didn't. The hospital said they didn't see anything abnormal but I am starting to worry. What should I do??
Avatar f tn I used to take Topamax for nerver pain, it was the only anti-seizure med that really worked well for the pain, and I had three attacks of kidney stones before I found out it was the Topamax causing them. I had to stop taking it, but was wondering if anyone else ever had this problem. I did a little research on it and in a small percentage of people it actually does do this, but my urologist only knew of one other person who took Topamax and had kidney stones.
