Avatar n tn I have seen infantile spasms while working on a pediatric unit. It is a serious seizure disorder that often causes cognitive/developmental delays. Doctors often down-play the severity of this disease, but the majority of the children that I have seen with this end up needing some for of long-term care. I am really sorry that you are going through this. Here is a website with some more info for you: http://www.aboutkidshealth.ca/Epilepsy/Infantile-Spasms.aspx?
Avatar m tn Hello, Several antiepileptic drugs and a hormonal therapy can be used to treat infantile spasms and valproate is tried as first line drug. Sometimes doctors start withv igabatrin (Sabril) which is often used as the initial therapy because it is relatively safe (especially for short-term use) and effective. If vigabatrin does not control the seizures in 3 or 4 days, adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) is usually used next. ACTH stops seizures in more than half of children with infantile spasms.
Avatar n tn s movements are manifestations of a seizure disorder known as infantile spasms (AKA hypsarrhythmia). The classical description of these spells are similar to what you describe: brief, jerking of the child, oftentimes with the hands flipping back and frequently occurring multiple times in clusters. Infantile spasms are generally divided into 2 broad categories: symptomatic and idiopathic/cryptogenic, the latter category a wastebasket for all of the cases that have no attributable etiology.

Avatar n tn Apparently I am experiencing heart spasms. I also have migraines which they feel are causing the arterial heart spasms. I had a heart catherization and my heart is healthy. I just have occasionally high blood pressure. Believe me I am as confused as you. That is why I am asking if it is okay to take Topamax for my migraines and Norvasc and Cardizem for my heart. I haven't spoke with a pharmacist as of yet. I will pick up the Norvasc today.
Avatar f tn It is also Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved for, and now most frequently prescribed for, the prevention of migraines. It has been used by psychiatrists to treat bipolar disorder,[6][7][8] although it is not FDA approved for this purpose. This drug has been investigated for use in treatment of obesity,[9][10] especially to aid in the reduction of binge eating,[11][12] and also as a possible treatment for alcoholism.
Avatar n tn Hi, my son had infantile spasms which started at approx 3 months old, his eyes would squint and roll up, not fully but as if he was straining, both arms would raise up at the same time, this typically happened on waking or before sleep, I was told for weeks it wasnt anything serious or it was colic.. I video taped him doing theses movements and pushed and pushed to see a neurologist, when they saw it they did say it looked like a fit, prescribed him phenobarbitone* and sent us home...
Avatar f tn Hi, I am 48 years old and have had a twitch in my lower left eyelid for about 3 months. This can be 24 hours a day for many days at a time and then it becomes intermittent. In the last few days, my upper right eyelid has started fluttering intermittently as well. I have been on Topamax (100mg) per day for migraines since 2009, so I doubt whether this has suddenly become the cause. I am not stressed, but I do drink 2-3 cups of coffee per day. Can eyelid twitching go on this long?

She just spent 4 days at all children's and her Veeg was normal, her Contrast MRI including the basil ganglia was normal, her reflux test was negative.

Avatar f tn [15] A pilot study suggests that Topiramate is possibly effective against infantile spasms.[16] A study by Harvard recommends topiramate as an effective treatment in the prevention of Periventricular leukomalacia in preterm infants after an hypoxic-ischemic injury.[17] In May 2006 the U.S. National Institutes of Health web site clinicaltrials.
Avatar m tn topamax 50mg for ulnar nerve pain and cymbalta 30mg which he swtched form my aropax (paxil) which i had taken for 13 yrs without any adverse effects. Avatar n tn I saw a response about what was referred to as benign infantile seizures. My neice has seizures that started at about 2 months old. My sister was told that she would probably grow out of it by the age of 6 months. She is now 2 and a half years old. The description below that I saw on this site sounds like what she is going through: "It is reassuring that thus far all the tests are normal. What you describe is what we would also call infantile seizures.

Avatar n tn Hi. For over a year (maybe two--I've lost count), I have been having spasms while I am sleeping. They used to be minor--a leg jerk here, an arm flail there. But they got to the point where at least once every night my entire body will spasm, to the point where my body actually flies into the air an inch or two above the bed. This can happen either when I am drifting off to sleep or in the middle of deep sleep.
574118 tn?1305135284 goodmorning ezz, just reading your post I am sorry I can't be of any help with your questions on MS and phenomenon ur experiencing. However I do have a question for u abt the neurontin and its use as a stabilizer. I had never heard this before.
Avatar m tn I had bad muscle spasms and stuttering. I was put on benztropine which put the bad spasms and stuttering to a slower pace. I was taken off that medicine by my regualar doctor because of what it did to my eyesight. I only get mild ticks and spasms thruout the day and only stutter at times. I still have a constant shaking in my left hand which i did not have before. I also have head pressure on my left temple that will not go away.
Avatar n tn I have had disabling headaches NON STOP for the past two months and my neurologist put me on Topamax which I started last week. I had my MRI today which I am anxiously awaiting the results of. Scared! But the Topamax has caused me to become, for lack of a better word, stupid, slow, unable to find the right word to say, confused, disoriented, tingling in my hands and feet. I don't know that I will be able to continue taking it.
Avatar m tn I would ask for an alternative medicine. Topamax causes hair loss which I have experienced first hand. I found out that that is one of the main side effects and wish I hadn't taken it. I would look on the internet for medications that treat migraines and look at all of the side effects. I have found I have to be proactive and do my research and ask the doctor about a specific medication.
Avatar f tn Two days ago I went to my first NL appt and he wasnt very nice IDK if it was he was being sarcastic a jerk or if that was just his tone of voice due to his accent. He took one look at my MRI's and couldnt figure out what a spot in the middle of what seemed to be my spinal cord was he keept asking "what is this? what is this?" then he would change the view and ask "what is this?"..... sent me to get a brain MIR and an other C-spine and some blood work I AM FREAKING OUT!
Avatar f tn I had periorbital migraines and was placed on Topamax, technically an anti-seizure but also great for migraine/headache control and mood stabilization in bipolar disorder. That for a while was the only thing that worked for me. It can have a sedative and appetite suppressant effect. I was also shortly on a low dose of Elavil for migraines. Carefull with that one, take only the amount prescribed.
Avatar n tn Referred to neurologist who prescribed Topamax and 24hr EEG. Three hours after taking first dose of Topamax 25mg I was rushed to hospital after waking from sound sleep with nausea, severe muscle spasms, and loss of speech. Muscle spasm and exaggerated twitching stopped after about an hour. Told to not take Rx anymore until after EEG. Spasms and speech loss continued on and off daily with brain fog and extreme fatigue being constant for 3 weeks.
Avatar n tn Same goes with Neurontin the generic is Gabapentin, I was on this it did nothing for me but affect my IBS issues so I got off it.....again we r all different I am on Topamax for 3 yrs now and doing fine as long as I stay on a low dose. Make sure u get more testing to rule out the related issues and go from there, research chiari specialists, and try to get with one.
1655289 tn?1326042889 Topamax does tend to cause weight loss, but trust me, this is not the way you want to lose weight. Topamax (I was taking it for bipolar) first of all did nothing for my moods. I was back in the hospital a few months after first being prescribed this, along with seroquel and ativan for panic and anxiety. That's not what makes this medicine so undesirable though. With each dose increase, I had numbness in my legs and arms. This could continue for as long as 2 weeks after a dose increase.
