Topamax for bipolar 1

Common Questions and Answers about Topamax for bipolar 1

topamax

I have been on topamax for almost 4 years, for the treatment of bipolar disorder. In the beginning I believed this was a miracle drug. I did not have any side effects that I believed were that noticeable, or could not live with. I did after six months lose 40 lbs, and did not know it was the drug. I did not change anything.
what was the reason the doc put you on topamax?was it for bipolar or headaces? lithium 300 carb can cause weightloss and memory loss.topamax realy helps for headaces alote.you seem to be takeing a couple of different things, plus smoked pot on top of it how can you pin point it to topamax.i think pot can cause memory loss too . i wish you luck!!!!
hi- I am attempting to taper off of bipolar medictions Topamax 100MG 1tabTID [anticonvulsant] as mood stabilizer and Bupropion 100 MG 2tab BID [antidepressant] I am dx as bipolar 1, rapid cycling- took 2 years to get this level of med, and it to be effective. Problem? MOTOR SKILLS! Topamax is severely inhibiting my ability to concentrate, articulate thoughts and also my memory has gone to the birds- and I am only 26 next month!
I found that it did not work for my Bipolar even though i was on 800mg and yes, you will need regular blood tests to check your liver and kidney function. If you are concerned about it talk to your Psychiatrist about other options. I did! It is your body and you do have control over what goes into it.

He is currently taking Topamax (37.5 mg), Desoxyn (5 mg), Tenex (1 mg), Abilify (1.25 mg), Prozac (1 ml), and Zyrtec... My question is... is this to much? I have let my ex-wife handle this for a long time... I don't believe that he needs all of this medicine. I think he is taking way to much... he is starting to have a real hard time and doesnt like the medicine or the way it makes him feel.
I had periorbital migraines and was placed on Topamax, technically an anti-seizure but also great for migraine/headache control and mood stabilization in bipolar disorder. That for a while was the only thing that worked for me. It can have a sedative and appetite suppressant effect. I was also shortly on a low dose of Elavil for migraines. Carefull with that one, take only the amount prescribed.
Hold your head high and carry yourself with pride. Remember God loves you. I'm on topamax for migraines I have 1 atleast 3 or 4 times a week if not more they get so bad I get sick and can't be around anyone. I wish you all the luck in the world and may God bless you....
Hi I just wanted to tell my story, I went back to the doctor today and they have to wean me off the Topamax I was on it for Migraines. I am also on Wellbutrin for depression and have been for years. They put me on the Topamax about 3 weeks ago I have notice some weight lost however I went "crazy" lol.

My dr. put me on Topamax... for migranes, but also for weightloss... He says it will really kick in and start helping me shed weight once I get up to the 150-200mg mark. I am currently on 100mg's/day and will increase to 150mgs by the weeks end...then 200mg's by the following week... Anyone else use this drug and what are your experiances at the different dosage levels? I have no headaches at all which I love...
I've been on Topamax for about a year now at 75mg x 2 day i can put up with most of the side effects but the last few weeks i've been getting hair loss. i did not know this was one of the side effects of Topamax and the only way i found out was by going on the web , i think we should get told more about this side effect of topamax it's not nice seeing your hair washing away every time you want to wash your hair.
This might be a stupid question. But for those who have bipolar (like me) how are you able to have relationships. Me I have never been in one or in love, Just lust when those manic days hit and this cause me to try for a relationship for all the wrong reasons. So how are you able to do it.
any advice? What has it done/not done for all of you. I'm bipolar II with more noticable depression than mania. Please help. My other option is to either go back to prozac or try wellbutrin, or just the lamictal.
I have been on topamax for migraines for eleven months now and have lost a ton of weight...at first i had same side effects and it was very scary, but they do lessen in time and i find not having as many migraines well worth the first 6 weeks of strange speech, confusion, side pain etc. i make myself drink enough water each day...and with the help of excercise i have lost around 27kgs...definitly dampens my appetite!!.
All except Topamax, which wasn't used for the bipolar dosorder but to ease up on a side effect. I took Topamax in the a.m. It was only temporary as long as the side effect occured and I felt and showed had a handle on it. If your husband has been on the fentanyl patch for a long time and he is on high dose, the taper will take some time, He probably built up tolerance if his headaches didn't really go away. I don't have headaches like he does.
My Internist may put me on Topamax for weightloss. Can't have anphetamines(heart issues)for appetite supression. Have over 100 lbs. to lose and wonder if this is an effective drug.
I take 40mg of fluoxetine/Prozac and being an antidepressant I hear it makes mania in bipolar disorder much worse. I am currently being assessed for bipolar disorder but after starting on the antidepressant for a few months now I haven't noticed a significant change in mania symptoms whilst taking it compared to when I took no medication. Is it possible to have bipolar but not having worsened symptoms due to antidepressants?
I'm probably type 1, I'm just older now. Thanks for sharing, I've seen quit a few bipolar folks come through here, most of us end up addicts also. I can't tell if it's getting better with clean time, or worse. I know this will be as personal of a choice as a person can make, but hearing your stories helps.
I have been, in retrospect, mildly hypo for many years. So the Topamax didn't cause it. The Topamax was given for supposed "Migraine Associated Vertigo" diganosed last year after having a mis-diagnosis of Meneire's Disease over the last 13 years. My main symptom was vertigo and dysequalibrium. I now know this is due to my hypothyroidism. Every doctor checked me for it, but I was told my TSH being in the upper end of the reference range was "normal". I didn't think it was!
I have been on Topamax 150mg for 1 1/2 years and recently went off because of hairloss. I did have 25 lbs. weightloss but also noticed in past 6 months that my hair was falling out! If there was just one thing that I do take great care of it is my hair. I am afraid to wash or style it at all! However, I do! It is now about 50% the thickness that it once was prior to Topamax. I have started to take Biotin 1000mcg about 2 months ago but did take a multivitamin the entire time.
I'm used to the 50mg, and I have only taken 1 Imitrex since I started the Topamax. I feel like this drug may really help my migraines. On the Bipolar end of things, I feel like it is helping a *little* to control my urges to "lash out", ie.. things that I would normally say or do, instead I just think them to myself and move along. I am having a little difficulty with word recall, but I had that before. It's a little worse now but I'm already used to it. lol. 160. Grrrrr.
Topamax! It is an anticonvulsant used for epilepsy, migraine prevention, and off-label used for bipolar and weight loss. I have read good reviews for people using it for bi-polar. I am surprised no one mentioned it to you already. Good luck, although I am sure you have already been put on something. I have found that the key to taking medications is research A LOT before you put it in your mouth. http://www.iguard.
Geodon is now approved for Bipolar, and is what I take. It's nuetral for weight gain. Zoloft can have weight loss as a side effect, and Topomax has weight loss as a side effect. All three of these meds combined and I lost weight without even trying. Of course when I lost my insurance and wasn't able to take them any more I gained it all back in record time. 20 pounds in a month. Of course Iwas very depressed and eating really badly, as well as being sedentary.
This patient was a 65 year-old man on only 25 mg of Topamax a day for headaches. It took us over 8 hours just to get the eye pressure under 50 (which is still about 3 times normal.) He was rapidly losing vision from an attack of acute angle closure glaucoma IN BOTH EYES. That is one of the most significant things that people don't always realize.
Plus, when they reject you it hurts - I know how that is, believe me. I have 1 friend that I can count on for anything, but my family, ....not so much. If you husband doesn't understand that his messiness contributes to your mania, too, start getting rid of the excess - maybe. My ex and I had this problem when we were married and it has come out since we have been divorced (5+ years), that he felt neglected in some way, and was always wanting to spend money, collecting ****, etc.
Patients with bipolar disorders face significant risks of morbidity and mortality and present medical practitioners with considerable diagnostic and management challenges. The lifetime prevalence of bipolar disorders is estimated at 1-4% of the general population.1 Suicide is attempted by 25-50% of sufferers2, and overall 15% of people with bipolar disorders die by suicide.3 Accurate diagnosis depends on recognising often under-reported symptoms of elevated mood.
I hope anyone who uses Topamax for any reason is fully aware of the serious risk of acute narrow angle glaucoma. I had read several articles about it but saw it firsthand last week. As usual on my quiet weekend off I got the dreaded call from the emergency room, again. This time about a woman on Topamax for 7 days who seemed to have lost almost all her vision 12 hours after increasing her dose per her doctor's instructions.
i take serequel 100 before bed for panic disorder and wellbutrin 300 for depression tramadol for fibro pain cholersterol meds.
Yeah, I'd have to say that maybe, just maybe, all these medications just may have screwed with my physiology at least a little, but what do I know, I was just a mere LAB RAT! I don't know if I'm really Bipolar I have a therapist I've been seeing for 6 years and she thinks I just suffer from trauma. Meanwhile I had another therapist I worked with for a year tell me I was bipolar one???? I'm living my life Medication free now, and I'm learning to live one day at a time all over again.
