topamax for alcohol cravings

I am aware of the fact that it is a mood stabilizer however I was told that it helps with cravings for alcohol also . Is this true? Is this a drug that can help alcoholics with their cravings ?

ve not heard of topamax being used for this purpose. however, there is a drug called campral that is specifically for alcohol cravings that has been tried through many years of research in the real world. campral is most effective when combined with some type of aftercare such as therapy or 12 step recovery programs. topamax was used in a study of 371 alcoholics at the medical university of sc which was published less than a year ago. at that time it was not fda approved for such therapies.

I craved alcohol the last 6 weeks i was pregnant. I'd always go to the alcohol section of the store and stare at all the options. I never drank. Now that I've had my daughter, i don't crave it anymore. I had one sip of a margarita and no more lol. It was gross.

Up until about a week ago I was on Hydrocortizone, Levoxyl, Humatrope, Enpresse (a Birth Control), and Topamax. Now last week I saw a new neuro for some seizure medicine complications and he is going to wean me off the Topamax and slowly put me on Lamictal, which I have begun, I am only on 25mg right now. Today I had a very small amount of alcohol, a mixed rum beverage, which I mixed myself, and I felt absolutley awful.

Last night I started taking Wellbutrin SR for my depression. I am taking 150 mg in the morning and 150 mg at night. I have noticed today I am very jittery and shakey. I have had about a half cup of coffee (normally I am on cup 3 by this time of morning). I have smoked one ciggarette all day. Is the shaking a side effect of Wellbutrin or would the combination of caffine having something to do with it? What are some other side effects of Wellbutrin?

Hi I would also like to comment as well.... I am taking topamax and I take it for migrane prevention.. and not for seizures....Should we still be wearing a medical alert even tho we do not have seizures>?

I take Topamax 100 mg once a day for migraines. I have found that it has worked wonders for me. I don't get migraines very often anymore. I was out about once a week before taking topamax and now its much less than that and when I do get them they are at least manageable. sherrilynn- I find it interesting the effect topamax had on your eating habits as I have found it to have the opposite on mine. For the most part my appetite has decreased, except for during my period of course.

Hi, I am taking Topamax for my bulimia. I have suffered with this for So so long. I was on topamax once before and it did help quite a bit, for quite awhile. For an unrelated reason, I had to stop it. I just began it again, and I have to say, I am having a hard time staring it. The side effects are much more exagerated then what I remember. Severe anxiety, depression and extreme senistivity to touch. I was to start with 50 mg a day...and increase from there. I just can't.

i was told if i kept going near the barber shop, i would end up getting a haircut so i stay away from people, places and things that i associated with my drinking, and i try to help others find their own path to a different way of life. the antabuse will do nothing for cravings aside from providing some psychological aversion to alcohol, as it will make you violently ill if you drink on it (i've tried and trust me it sux big time).

It could be those that had a hair loss issue also had a thyroid issue and assumed it was the topamax......????

I also know that when i drink alcohol i end up eating like a horse....same type thing i guess...gets me wanting more and more pleasure/endorphins..AA/NA says abstinence from all mind stimulating drugs/drinks...i am not there yet as i do drink but in moderation...i will have to keep a check on that....i do crave pills when i over do it...the next day when i feel yuck...so i dont over do it...i think i have control of alcohol...again...think...who knows.....

I took topamax for a month for chiari pain and feibro. It made me worse. I usually get most reactions to medicines though. I was depressed and angry all the time. After I stopped taking it I felt a lot better. I have chronic pain 24/7 and nothing works usually. I would rather not rely on pills. I have tried every pill and only ones that work at all and don't make me crazy are excedrin-works as well as anything else, vicodin and morphine.this is just my experience everyones body is different.

What are the best medications to be on for an at home alcohol detox? Can I detox safely by slowly lowering my alcohol intake over the next week instead? I have at home now the following: blood pressure cuff, klonopin and atenolol, also lasix and potassium pills. My biggest concern is my blood pressure spiking. There in no way I am able to detox at an alcohol facility. So if I can't use the meds I have available to me, maybe I should do the taper using less alcohol each day?

The first time I was on Lamictal I took it in conjunction with Topamax. I believe it was the Topamax that was responsible for some weight loss, but it could have been Lamictal, too. I remember being specifically told that if I had winter carbohydrate craving they would probably go away from one or the other. Unfortunately, they were not effective for my bipolar. I have not taken an SSRI in years after bad experiences with Zoloft and Paxil so I can't advise you about the Prozac.

I would ask for an alternative medicine. Topamax causes hair loss which I have experienced first hand. I found out that that is one of the main side effects and wish I hadn't taken it. I would look on the internet for medications that treat migraines and look at all of the side effects. I have found I have to be proactive and do my research and ask the doctor about a specific medication.
