topamax dosage side effects

I'm back with another question :-). DS is 11.5 yo, recently diagnosed. He was put on topamax and imitrex for migraines which are supposedly unrelated and are what sent us to the neurologist in the first place. Migraines continue, some tingling in hands and feet, which is likely the topamax. However, today he had a migraine (been on topamax just over three weeks). Once it wore off I took him to school.

t try Topamax before but what I know is numbness and tingling are some of Topamax side effects. It become less with time. Are numbness and tingling really bad? or u can handle it? Do you have any other side effects? How long to use it? Is Topamax useful as mood stabilizer and good for weight loss according to your experience?

hi julianna i started topa 2 yrs ago and am now on 300 mg a day for my migrains the beginng was ell lots of side effects one h/a shaking nausea best of all weighttloss they all did go away you just have to wait it out it is worth it it is a cause for stones drink plenty of water and also taper off if yoy deceide to stop other wise you will hve very bad side effects.

Hi, I am currently on an increasing dosage of topamax for suspected seizures - although the seizures are very mild and random. I am not the type of person who likes to take medication and I have had a read on a couple of different forums about topamax and there seems to be a lot of negativity surrounding the drug with some pretty scary side effects. The cognitive side effects also went away after a couple of months. After about 3 months on Topamax and getting to my maximum dose, I was getting minor headaches and virtually no side effects. The best thing about Topamax as opposed to other migraine drugs is that it doesn't make you gain weight. Topamax gave me my life back.

I am on my 2nd week of Topamax. Get ready for some very strange side effects. Your hands and feet and face will tingle and fall asleep. I have no appetite at all. I can go from breakfast to dinner of the next day and not be hungry at all. I have to force myself to eat. I'm forgetting things. I went to Wal Mart and forgot what i went there for. I am on it for migranes so im hoping i can stick it out because my headaches are unbearable. Good luck!

It helps suppress the desire to eat even smoking which I have quit too. I have had all blood tests ran on me. I've been going to my doctor for 10 years. I did not have any problems before taking this medication. A group of doctors consulted me in the ER and all agreed that my dosage of Topamax, 100 mg 2X's a day, is two much!!! Upon further conversation, I learned that by neurologist was supposed to gradually increase my dosage to that amount. And reading the rest of the blogs, I see that nearly everyone was gradually giving Topamax in doses of 25mg. My neurologist started me at 100mg twice a day and I have been there every since.

I was taking it .. cannot handle the side effects. While the taste thing is horrid, its the "slowness" of my brain that I can't deal with. I had the same problem with Neurontin .. makes me feel like my synapses are on slow motion.

I am on topamax now and some side effects are hard to deal with. my dr is decreasing my dosage. my side effects are that my arms and legs are numb and tingling like pins and needles and I am very tired I have diahreea alot. you have to stay in contact with your doc while on the medication.

All of a sudden, I have experienced joint pain and stiffness. I found out that topamax can lead to these side effects. however, I have gradually gone off the topamax and have quit taking it for approximately 4 - 5 days. Today I am still stiff (shoulders, knee, wrist and ankles) and my ankles are swollen. Do you think this is still a side effect of Topamax in my system?

Then I read that heightened ammonia in blood can lead to kidney stones, hair loss and confusion...all side effects of Topamax. So, my thinking is that adding water and maybe some milk thistle or other liver supporting supplements may help tip the balance back. I am not sure those things work, this is just my theory on my limited research and there may be much larger issues at play. However, water and milk thistle can't hurt...right?

I also take Topiramate (Topamax). Your side-effects are very similar to what I experienced when I started the medication. But, as Selma wrote, there is an adjustment period. It took me two or three weeks to adjust and things got better. When my Neuro increased the dosage the side effects did not seem to be as drastic. Now, three years on the med, I have very few side effects. Those that I do experience are tolerable in comparison to the migraine.

Hello, Topamax can cause itching and erythematous rash in some individuals.Although the main side effects of topamax are slower reflexes, trouble thinking or concentrating, tiredness, poor coordination, and dizziness,yet it has shown itchy skin in some individuals. I feel that if you are showing any allergic reaction to topamax,pls stop taking it and consult your doctor for a change in prescription.You can take over the counter antihistaminic like benadryl or Claritin for itching.

Normally when a doc starts you on a new Rx, a follow-up appointment is recommended a couple weeks or a month afterwards. If your doctor didn't suggest it, you should book the follow-up yourself so that you can find out if what you're experiencing is Rx or MS related.

I have a lot of co-workers at a call center who have also tried topamax but say its not usefull and hated the side effects so they stopped.

Hi, may I ask what dosage of Topamax were u on...I tried to up my dosage and got worse, now that I am at the lowest dosage I am ok....just wondering if it was the dosage? And by pain r u talking headache's...some have all over pains...so I am asking to what end ur pain is. I am not a fan of meds either, so I understand where u r coming from.

Can increasing Topamax cause a delayed side effect? A month and a half ago, I was put on increased dosage of Topamax. However, I am now and have been for the past week experiencing "pins and needles" in my feet, legs, arms and hands. Every post I read online suggested this side effect kicked in with introduction or increase of the medication, and not a month or more later. I told my neuro's medical assistant (I needed to call anyway) and he said she would let the doc know.

It sure helps to know when you are not alone and others have the same side effects. Topamax helps my migraines and the weight loss is a plus too but the memory is suffering when it comes to writing and speech...like spelling...sometimes I know the word to use but can not even think of the letters to look it up so I end up using a different word in it's place...very frustrating. Speaking is another story. Sometimes it just isn't worth it to talk at all.
