Topamax dopamax

Common Questions and Answers about Topamax dopamax

topamax

I started taking Topamax...or Dopamax as I call it..2 years ago..the only side effects I have is verbal impairment or a mild form of aphasia. I have to draw things as I can't think of nouns in a sentence. Writing isn't too bad, but speaking is a challenge. I only take 100mg. At first I lost 5 lbs and the colas, carbonated pop, etc tasted weird but I got used to it. Then the weight went back on and then some. And the headaches are coming back now. So now I'm not sure what to do.
Any way my great family doctor is slowly taking me off the Keppra. I go back in two weeks and he is going to try Topamax. Does anyone take this? If so does it work with your headaches? Do you have any side effects? Also has any of you been approved for disability for your Chiari? I did not want to quit my job if there was no hope.
I could easily get a prescription for Topamax as I have migraines and my doc and I talked about it at our last visit. I would also LOVE the weight loss side effect. Anyone that has or is taking Topamax - does it make you feel nervous? Does it make your heart beat faster and/or palpitations? I have anxiety so I can't use it if it will make me more nervous. Anybody have bad side effects from Topamax?
Dopamax I mean Topamax is prescribed for migraines and for epilepsy and other off label such as mood stabilizer if I remember correctly. Doesn't seem like it would be something prescribed for ocd-typically an ssr only. I would get another opinion on that one. I was off the wall on prozac and I have ocd/anxiety. Lexapro isn't bad just start out low and then paxil, zoloft, etc. are other choices but prozac is way, way stimulating for people with anxiety.
Be aware it may take some time to get used to Topamax..also known in some circles as Dopamax because it can cause you to be drowsy and disconnected and have difficulty with word finding...this is more common in the early weeks of treatment. Your dr. will probably titrate your dosage.
I know all the usual suspects and Topamax jokes (dopamax, tingling, word recall, etc) that you read on the brochure or hear about, but I wanted some personal feedback as far as how long the effects last and if they diminish. So far I haven't really had word recall issues and I've had some tingling but read that meant I needed to up my water intake and once I did that, the paresthesia (tingles) went away immediately. What I do feel is TIRED....
I took topamax a few years ago for migranes. It really helped with the migranes but I stopped it because of the dopamax and hairloss side effects. My dr suggested I try it again because of the headaches. I can't believe the doses that some of you go up to and being able to handle the side effects. The first time I started really slow and this time the dr has me increasing to dose alot quicker than before. I am having scary nightmares which i didn't have the first time.
I just started taking Topamax 50 mg for migraine control yesterday. My Dr. said the side effects were not bad, but if I noticed any I could take it before bed. Well I took it after I picked it up from the pharmacy at about 3 pm and in the evening I started feeling really sick to my stomach, dizzy, and severe hot flashes. I took a nap because I also was tired. Well I woke up from my nap and had to go to the store and had to come home immediately I felt as though I was going to pass out!!!
I have digenerative disc disease and my neirologist just prescribed topamax, he said it would help with the pain and tingling but could result in weight loss. I am wondering if prescribing topamax for ddd is common among neurologists? I can't seem to find any other information related to topamax as a pain med, only information I have is that it's a powerful drug with lots of side effects, most not so good. The weight loss aspect is the only plus...
I have been prescribed Wellbutrin for depression and Topamax as a mood stabilizer. The combination worked very well for me and the bonus was that I lost weight. However, I also lost hair. I was wondering if anyone else experienced the same problem.
I have been, in retrospect, mildly hypo for many years. So the Topamax didn't cause it. The Topamax was given for supposed "Migraine Associated Vertigo" diganosed last year after having a mis-diagnosis of Meneire's Disease over the last 13 years. My main symptom was vertigo and dysequalibrium. I now know this is due to my hypothyroidism. Every doctor checked me for it, but I was told my TSH being in the upper end of the reference range was "normal". I didn't think it was!
I just started Topamax. I'm on 25mg/day and will increase by 25mg/week until I reach 100mg. I heard the weightloss effect depends on the dose. So, what dose did everyone here have their success? And what type of diet/eating plan and exercise plan did you do to help it along? I'm desperate to lose 40 lbs (half of which I gained on Zoloft-no longer taking). PLEASE respond if you had any weightloss on this drug, I'm very curious. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!
I found this site today. I was on Topamax for about 1 year for depression and chronic pain syndrome (broke my neck in a car accident). I did loose a lot of weight. Dopamax! Yes. But - her is what I found to be true about Topamax and I pray they each person considers this. There are many SSRI's that should NEVER be combined with Topamax! Effexor being the number one drug that should never be combined with it.
My question is, have anyone of you ever been on Tomamax to help curving the cravings? What I have read up on about topamax is that it is usualy prescribed to lose weight and or to decrease ones migrans. I also read that it eventually makes any carbenated drink soda/beer taste awful. Please tell me that somebody has used it or knows of somebody that does. Thanks so much.
I have been on Topamax for about 2 years now for migraines. I am on 150 mg per day. I take 3 50 mg pills before bed each day. I have definitely had my issues on topamax. When I first began on it, the appetite loss was extreme but I eventually adjusted. I have lost almost 50 pounds on the drug and have finally got into a size 10 just this month. My goal is a size 8, 150 pounds as I am 5 foot 6 inches tall.
My neuro is switching my meds from Lamictal to Topamax. Although it's only my fourth day at 25mg of Topa, I'm very sleepy! I'm not being weaned at all from Lamictal until I've reached my therapeutic dose of Topa. Is it possible I've misunderstood the nurse? In other words, is this typical? Any other time I've been weaned off of one and switched to another med, it's been simultaneously. I'm wondering if this is why I'm so tired. Thanks is advance!
I have been advised to take Celebrex or Topamax for headaches. Which treats headaches/migraines better? Which has had more success?
i was wanting any ideas on if the tumor was the reason the topmax was puttin pressure in my eyes.. i really want to try the topamax again.. i have asked my migraine spealist and she didnt know.. i dont see my neuro for a couple months and will ask about this..
I have had radiculopathy in the past and took Neurontin for it and it helped a lot. Later I switched to Topamax and it helped better, but the side effects can be really bad. It messes with your short term memory and tends to make you dopey. Many people call it Dopamax. It also caused me to have kidney stones. If it is nerve pain the best thing would probably be something like Lyrica or Neurontin. It helps with the transmission of the pain signals in the nerves. It disrupts them somehow.
I wouldn't take topamax for any reason, on or off steroids. Even neurologists call it "dopamax" because it makes people so dumb while they're taking it. My cousin ended up in the mental hospital from the side effects of topamax. As far as losing weight while on steroids, if you are on a low dose, diet and exercise should do it. If you are on a hig dose, you will probably not be able to lose weight. Can you switch off the steroids onto something else?
I am now feeling the numbness and tingling, although I am not actually numb you just feel like you are. Its a strange yet slightly cool feeling. You can function normally so its not a side effect that worries me. The side effect that does worry me is the "dopamax" side effect that I am noticing - the loss of words, the losing train of though, trouble concentrating...feeling slightly stupid...going down a level of intelligence.
I never heard of it as an abortive med - I am on topamax (aka dopamax) and imitrex for the headaches that break through... I had only heard of the epilepsy/nerve meds for abortives... I hope it works for you! Migraines can be nasty - cause a lot of symptoms... there is a community here just devoted to them.
I believe it is not FDA approved for migraines,it should be.I take Topamax 75mg. a day for the last 2 and 1/2 years and it has worked great. Some people take more or less.I still get a few migraines and take imitrex.Do you have cervical disc problems?I did ,I had two discs replaced three months ago.But ask your doctor about Topamax.
Thanks much for your information--is appreciated. There seems to be more to botox injections than I've realized. One doc I saw three years ago suggested botox, but something told me not to do it, and I passed it by. I think I will talk to some docs and other people first. I just don't know what to do.
I am so down today because I was going to start topamax and it was supposed to help with my anxiety and weight loss. But it made me very sick today, and I have been stuck in this fog all day. It gets so depressing, and feels so lonely. I start my day treatment program next month so, I am hoping that it will be really helpful. I don't want to llook back 1 year from now and be in the same situation. I don't want to struggle everyday.
I will be sure to ask for it. I am getting prepared to start Topamax. I am not looking forward to it. I do not need anything to hinder my thinking further. The fact some call it Dopamax is not encouraging. And, thanks for relaying your experiences with hyperacusis. To know of someone that commiserates because of experience is helpful.
http://www.topamax.com/topamax/how-topamax-may-help--what-to-expect.html Perhaps a visit to your PCP or a phone call to your neurologist is in order. Normally when a doc starts you on a new Rx, a follow-up appointment is recommended a couple weeks or a month afterwards. If your doctor didn't suggest it, you should book the follow-up yourself so that you can find out if what you're experiencing is Rx or MS related.
i've been on the lamotrigine for depression (it didn't work) and i currently take the topamax to control migranes. yes, topamax is also called "topastupid" and "dopamax" because i swear i loose IQ points on a daily basis. LOL!! Good luck.
I was taking Topamax (dopamax) for headaches until it begin to cause problems with my eyesight. I had to stop it, but I still take it occasionally. Bucie, get an MRI of your brain. You could have arterial blockages. I have them. If you have strange feelings along with these headaches, then you could be at risk for a stroke. Not to scare you, but it is true. First I would check the side affects of all of my medications.
I am being taper off my topamax AKA dopamax (trouble with word finding, aphasia.etc.). I sound completly stupid in all aspects of life, hard in my current position at work.
