Common Questions and Answers about Topamax dopamax

topamax

Avatar n tn My neuro is switching my meds from Lamictal to Topamax. Although it's only my fourth day at 25mg of Topa, I'm very sleepy! I'm not being weaned at all from Lamictal until I've reached my therapeutic dose of Topa. Is it possible I've misunderstood the nurse? In other words, is this typical? Any other time I've been weaned off of one and switched to another med, it's been simultaneously. I'm wondering if this is why I'm so tired. Thanks is advance!
Avatar m tn I have been advised to take Celebrex or Topamax for headaches. Which treats headaches/migraines better? Which has had more success?
424862 tn?1203803456 Be aware it may take some time to get used to Topamax..also known in some circles as Dopamax because it can cause you to be drowsy and disconnected and have difficulty with word finding...this is more common in the early weeks of treatment. Your dr. will probably titrate your dosage.
551116 tn?1288190247 Tried Topamax last winter, but I wasn't able to tolerate it. I was sad because one of its side effect is weight loss, and after taking a lot of steroids I certainly needed the help! I was checked for neck problems and fortunately I didn't have problems like yours. Disc replacement is a major operation. Did it help your headaches or was the damage already there? My neurologist is thinking about having me do another DHE infusion cycle.
Avatar f tn I know all the usual suspects and Topamax jokes (dopamax, tingling, word recall, etc) that you read on the brochure or hear about, but I wanted some personal feedback as far as how long the effects last and if they diminish. So far I haven't really had word recall issues and I've had some tingling but read that meant I needed to up my water intake and once I did that, the paresthesia (tingles) went away immediately. What I do feel is TIRED....
Avatar f tn Thanks much for your information--is appreciated. There seems to be more to botox injections than I've realized. One doc I saw three years ago suggested botox, but something told me not to do it, and I passed it by. I think I will talk to some docs and other people first. I just don't know what to do.
1558393 tn?1299070031 Any way my great family doctor is slowly taking me off the Keppra. I go back in two weeks and he is going to try Topamax. Does anyone take this? If so does it work with your headaches? Do you have any side effects? Also has any of you been approved for disability for your Chiari? I did not want to quit my job if there was no hope.
Avatar n tn I never heard of it as an abortive med - I am on topamax (aka dopamax) and imitrex for the headaches that break through... I had only heard of the epilepsy/nerve meds for abortives... I hope it works for you! Migraines can be nasty - cause a lot of symptoms... there is a community here just devoted to them.
Avatar f tn i agree that it's very odd for a doc to leave the med decision up to you. i don't have epilepsy (my son does); but i've been on both of these meds. i've been on the lamotrigine for depression (it didn't work) and i currently take the topamax to control migranes. yes, topamax is also called "topastupid" and "dopamax" because i swear i loose IQ points on a daily basis. LOL!! Good luck.
Avatar f tn http://www.topamax.com/topamax/how-topamax-may-help--what-to-expect.html Perhaps a visit to your PCP or a phone call to your neurologist is in order. Normally when a doc starts you on a new Rx, a follow-up appointment is recommended a couple weeks or a month afterwards. If your doctor didn't suggest it, you should book the follow-up yourself so that you can find out if what you're experiencing is Rx or MS related.
1041303 tn?1421387341 I just started taking Topamax 50 mg for migraine control yesterday. My Dr. said the side effects were not bad, but if I noticed any I could take it before bed. Well I took it after I picked it up from the pharmacy at about 3 pm and in the evening I started feeling really sick to my stomach, dizzy, and severe hot flashes. I took a nap because I also was tired. Well I woke up from my nap and had to go to the store and had to come home immediately I felt as though I was going to pass out!!!
Avatar f tn Pain does not help. I had my fifth nerve effected so I take topamax aka dopamax and get killer headaches from time to time. It does decrease over time (my surgery was 2004?) Fatigue is still a constant issue with me and I am replaced - I got a neuro-muscular issue after my pituitary issue was uncovered. Have they looked for other auto-immune issues etc? I do hope you get copies of your tests and get more opinions. It is not worth suffering.
Avatar f tn Much more intelligent response than I can give. I am being taper off my topamax AKA dopamax (trouble with word finding, aphasia.etc.). I sound completly stupid in all aspects of life, hard in my current position at work.
Avatar n tn Topamax is not the friendliest of medications (hence the nick-name, dopamax), but there are other options. Can you indicate what is in the imaging report? Is it white matter? That can be too general to determine the source of the issue. There are also autonomic disorders, where blood pressure is not maintained.
1512520 tn?1290258130 I am on 100 mg of topamax a day ( 50mg 2x daily) and got a sinus infection on day 7 of starting topamax, been battling it for over a week now with antibiotics and it doesnt seem to be going away. Doctor said that I might have to decrease my topamax and I really dont want to as it seems to be working, if anything I was hoping to increase my topamax dose... Anyone else suffer this side effect, did it go away?
1230912 tn?1273492770 I was on Topamax for a short period of time for migraine preventive. It was the worse medicine I have ever taken....It made me feel crazy. Like I was outside of my body watching my life. I also had a difficut time, way more then normal, finding words and putting together sentences that made sense. Then one night I had an hallucination. That was the final straw, and I stopped. The neuro told me many people have bad reactions...and in fact the medical community call it "dopamax"....
Avatar f tn I have found another medicine called topamax that can help with my position. It is an off lable so I am going to talk to my dr about trying it. Anneinside I lost much of my weight from diet and working our. I make sure I only eat about 1200 calories a day based on how much I work out. Almost I got put in adderall and it helped a lot. If you go to your gunocologist she may be able to prescribe you bobtrile. It is an aid in weight loss and helps sooooo much!
1415174 tn?1453243103 I originally went to my neurologist for migraines and was put on Topamax for vertigo. It has worked At the same time I am perimenopausal and have become hypothyroid. My TSH was taken by my family practise doctor and the values have doubled every couple of months and are now at 8.25mcIU/mL reference range 0.358-3.800. He doesn't believe in doing the T3 and T4 and said that they are combined in the TSH value or something like that. In any case he doesn't like to run them.
Avatar f tn I have suffered from migraines since my late 20's. I am now 49. I have tried any and every migrained med, some work, some don't. My doctor has just suggested topamax. Has anyone taken this? Does it work? I am also hypothyroid and take 200mcg of synthroid, will there be issues taking these two meds together? I read that one of the side effects of topamax is weight loss. This I wouldnt mind as Ive put on weight due to my hypothyroid. But, the biggest thing would not have these headaches.
358486 tn?1294776388 Does anyone else here take Topamax for the intense spasms and jerking? If so PLZ reply and let me know if it helps?...how it affects U? If u have any better med suggestions for the intense jerking? I really need all the suggestions possible b4 I go back to the doc. Appreciate ur time....
Avatar m tn I was on 50 mg topamax at bedtime and have recently decided to stop (per dr.)I was only on it for 10 days, but had terrible side effects. Since stopping the MEDs. the side effects are crazy! I feel all of this anxiety and I cannot sleep, I have bizarre thoughts and zero appetite. This has been going on since I stopped 2 days ago. Anyone else experience this and more importantly how many days til I feel better???
424862 tn?1203803456 I have recently been diagnosed with basilar migraine and told to try Topamax, which I have to take over a period of months. We were hoping to have children soon, and were told I couldnt get pregnant while on this drug. What happens if we want to start trying for a baby, do I come off Topamax, and the symptoms come back? Or do I stay on it and not try for a baby for a long time???
Avatar f tn and i have bad peripheral vision .. my doctor prescribed topamax.. i am wondering how long it would take too notice the affects???
