I have digenerative disc disease and my neirologist just prescribed topamax, he said it would help with the pain and tingling but could result in weight loss. I am wondering if prescribing topamax for ddd is common among neurologists? I can't seem to find any other information related to topamax as a pain med, only information I have is that it's a powerful drug with lots of side effects, most not so good. The weight loss aspect is the only plus...
I started seeing a neurologist a few months ago and he recently gave me Xanax (1/2 during the day and 1 at bed) after trying a few other things that have not worked. And like you, I've done all the tests with and without contrast. I think the knows I am very wary of anything becoming addictive. I have tried natural methods to supplement his care: acupuncture, massage and recently a Chiropractic technique that seems to give instant relief for short periods of time.
I have been on Topamax for 6 weeks, 25 mg 2x a day, and I have not had a migraine in a month. This drug is wonderful. It is not without its side effects. I have lost my appetite, but I also feel groggy sometimes, and I have noticed the brain fog, like not being able to remember the name of a very familiar place or what I ate for dinner the night before. I have not noticed any hair loss yet.

Funny you mention the panic disorder, after my second round of anti-biotics my GP said I was stressed and anxious and put me on a anti-depressent/anxiety med and I felt great for the first week or so, then had the WORST panic attacks ever, one after another and so on. (I had a reaction to the drug- I think it was celexa)? Then when I called my GP- and said what is going on here, they sent me to a pyschologist due to my sensitivy to meds.
Life has been one hell of a roller coaster, but in this time I have managed to graduate college and an MBA, secure and maintain a well-paying and fulfilling business career and marry the love of my life (and hang on to her thus far). I have seen 3 different family doctors, 2 different psychiatrists and 1 endocrinologist...
5mgs of Klonopin. I have Xanax XR as a PRN and had too take that, along with 5 melatonin and 3 Benadrtyl to sleep last night; ridiculous...I still have a bunch of Xanax XR floating around in my system and it's not putting a dent into the mania. Over the past two weeks, my psychiatrist and I have tried Lithium (became very agitated) and Seroquel (made the cycling far worse). We thought about Zyprexa, but it works in the same manner as Seroquel.
She also takes 450 mgs of Wellbutrin a day for depression and 100 mgs of Topamax for migraines. Add to that the fact that she drinks a few glasses of wine every night and you have quite a cocktail. Since being put on Adderall her behavior has really changed. Yes - she is more focused at work - but she is also quick to take offense and anger now too. If any of us dares to say that she may be overmedicated - she gets angry and defensive.

Prior to the trip to the ER, my neurologist was treating me for almost daily migraines with 100 mg a day of Topamax and Imitrex and Zomig nasal sprays. It turned out the 'migraines' were actually sinus headaches. The untreated sinus infection and a severe UTI had caused the flare-up that landed me in the ER. At that time, I was on roughly 10 different medications, including Cymbalta, the commercials for which warn not to use it with migraine meds.
From my headache days - have you tried Topamax? It's a daily pill is an anti-seizure drug, it can have side effects and you only want to take a low dose. It did not work for me but others I know claim it has. I lived in la la land while on it. Dulled my senses to the point of being dangerous...but all people are different. While I was seeing my neurologist for my burning lip and chin, she offered a headache drug call something like Micquin(?).
My psychiatrist is weening me off the Lexapro and is giving me Topamax which should induce weight-loss and also lessen the side effects of going off the Lexapro. Unfortunately, there is a lot of side effects of Topomax as well but weight gain is not one of them and need to loose the weight now !!!!
There are only a couple of known mood stabilizers that have proven to reduce kindling and one (Lithium) that actually seems to reverse it. Studies are being done every day with the newer classes such as Lamactil and Topamax to see if they can help with the kindling but no really hard proof has come about yet. There are links to early dementia with Bi Polar that has been untreated but the good news is that with proper medication - we don't have to go through it.
it gave me a perceived higher level of thinking and social interaction. then things started to change. i no longer wanted it, i needed it to function. without it i was completely withdrawn and unable to even answer the phone. this took me to some very dark places of desperation. a real alcoholic will improvise even if it means drinking mouthwash or rubbing alcohol mixed with fruit juice.
