Topamax and withdrawal

Common Questions and Answers about Topamax and withdrawal

topamax

Of course if you give up soda you're going to lose weight! Topamax has completely made me into a different person. I used to have a very good memory and be an organized , efficient person. Now I honest to goodness have to think a minute to tell you how old my children are. Or what my phone number is. At first I'd have to double check it all the time or I might would get it wrong. You know that thing people think is funny where you go into a room and forget what you went in there for?
I started taking Topamax about 5 weeks ago for migraines and its been working like a charm. I have some minor side effects including dry mouth, itchiness, and weight loss, but other than that, its great. I havent had one migraine or headache in weeks!!! I started at 25mgs and I am supposed to increase to 100mgs however I havent gone over 50mgs at night because I feel like its working just fine. In my opinion, if its working fine at 50mgs, why increase?
/ I had all those symptoms and worse Ive seen cardiologist, neurologist, and 10 trips to the emergency room and 2 months into topamax and all those side affect are gone. just drink water...
I'm a college student and I just moved back into my dorm this week, and like the idiot I am I forgot my topamax at home which is a two hour drive away. (Along with my wallet but that's another story entirely). So I've been forced to go cold turkey from it until I can talk to the psychiatrist here, who I won't have an appointment with for at least a week.
It got so bad, that I had to carry around a notebook and pen, and it was a running joke at my work that you could tell me something and I'd turn around and forget. I finally had to go on disability. They titrated me off, and the side effects finally wore off around week 19. I hope you are doing well going off so quickly. My understanding was it could have seriously bad side effects if you did. I hope you experienced none of those.

I have digenerative disc disease and my neirologist just prescribed topamax, he said it would help with the pain and tingling but could result in weight loss. I am wondering if prescribing topamax for ddd is common among neurologists? I can't seem to find any other information related to topamax as a pain med, only information I have is that it's a powerful drug with lots of side effects, most not so good. The weight loss aspect is the only plus...
i recently went off topamax , have been off for 7 days. I now have very sore muscles in my legs to the point i cant hardly move, is this from withdrawal?
I've been on Topamax for a while now and it's having a devastating effect on my memory. How can I taper it off? I'd like to do it as soon as I can... Thanks!
com/topamax/topamax-side-effects.html You can consult your physician for the gradual withdrawal of the drug and then switching over to some other drug.

Suddenly stopping seizure meds can cause withdrawal seizures, even if you didn't have a seizure disorder to begin with (and Topamax is a seizure drug).
I started Topamax in November of this year at 25mg a week and have been increasing the dose by 25mg per week and will reach 200mg next week to reach my limit. My doctor prescribed it for my migraines as I had requested it since all the other treatments seemed to have weight gain as a side effect while this one was the opposite with weight loss as a possibility.
I am sorry to hear about your medical problems. The symptoms could be a combination of side effects of Topamax and withdrawal of Lyrica. Your doctor may need to adjust the dose of both the drugs, slowly reducing the Lyrica and increasing the Topamax. Please talk to your doctor regarding this. Take care! The medical advice given should not be considered a substitute for medical care provided by a doctor who can examine you.
The first time I tried to go off cold turkey, and I experienced the most horrible withdrawal symptoms (brain zaps, vertigo, jitters, etc.). After resuming my med schedule, I then began tapering off over several months. I've now been off for about three weeks, and even though my withdrawals haven't been nearly as bad, I still feel some vertigo and mild brain zaps. On another forum, I've read where some people were given Topamax to help with the symptoms.
My doctor is out of the country and will not be here until saturday. Also taking Prozac 40 mg, topamax 200 mg, klonopin 1mg for bipolar disorder. Any suggestions out there?
The one thing that made diet soda taste really bad to me was Topamax that I took for migraines. It didn't help the headaches but is did make diet coke and regular coke taste really bad. The doctor said they sometimes prescribe it for addictions (I think he meant alochol). I know that you want an OTC solutions but I just thought this was interesting. Maybe you could get a really small dose of it???
i stopped cold turkey from wellbutrin and celexa and was feeling ok for a few days then it hit me. i then went back to half dosage of each for 4 days, this made all symptoms of withdrawal go away. i then dropped my dose to 1/4 for 4 days, figuring this would hopefully make me have no withdrawal symptoms. not sure if i didn't step down for long enough or what but withdrawal is back though definitely not as severe. i have the vertigo which is awful. feeling dizzy, nauseous.
I was suicidal and depressed during w/d from the Z and now with the Lex w/d I am suicidal, nauseated and dizzy, and my moods range from irritable to sad and withdrawn. I am also emotional for the first time in a couple of years. I was briefly hospitalized last year after coming off Paxil cold turkey. I am feeling very frightened, sick, and hopeless. Has anyone else gone through med w/d, and can you tell me how long it lasted?
He also put me on something called Topamax which is used in hiher doses for anti-serusers but in low doses susspose to control cravings and of couse some valium.. Well This is the 7 day and I still feel like ****. I am sleeping so much, no energy I stoped the cattapress and the valium still use the durseyl for sleep and taking a ssri Celixia. My question is how much longer will I feel like ****. In the past it only took a few days and I was fine but this time its really bad.
( anyhow, yes you must wait to take it or you will do into SEVERE withdrawal...believe me, i'll done it, and it is not worth it. it's 24 hours for short-acting opiates and 48 for longer ones like oxy. i waited 24 hours last time, but i still didn't feel well when i first started the bup...i think i should have waited longer. you probably got temgesic - i've tried that too. i has never worked for me doing it on my own. this time i'm under a dr.
Of course there are other antipsychotics as well and of course other mood stabilizers and anti-depressents. You may not feel the withdrawal symptoms now but as time passes and the medication gets out of your system you will and they can be unsafe. As well what they are treating will return. Speak to your psychiatrist now so that they can transfer you to something else before things get out of hand.
Amrix 1xday(24hr release Flexaril), T3 (8-10/day), Topamax (took for 25 days~had a SEVERE mental reaction and was taken off immediately), Xanax 0.25mg (1 at bedtime) and Ambien (10mg at bedtime). For 7 of the last 9 days, I was down to just the Xanax and Ambien. Two nigthts ago I started substituting Melatonin for the Ambien. Amazingly, there is no difference in number of hrs I am getting (about 4) or the quality.
Then she asks me if I want to schedule another appt. HA! I told her NOT RIGHT NOW, I'LL CALL BACK AND DO IT and turned around and quickly walked out before I subjected her to my rapidly impending Bipolar Wrath. Right then I knew my dose wasn't high enough yet- lmao. I ended up having to take a Maxalt on the way home and all in all it was a ****** day. I start 75mg tomorrow.
DnnTrry- I switched from Lyrica to Topamax completely mostly because of the weight gain and cost. Lyrica and Topamax are both anti-seizure meds and do not have any major interactions, but I understand your apprehension. Also, side effects from Topamax are most crippling usually when you increase too fast. I hope your doctor didn't place you on 50mg right off the bat??? That dosage is sure to give you some discomfort.
I knew I was going to have some withdrawal issues and the first week was horrible mentally. Physically I pretty much dodged the bullet. This is day 15 and mentally I am still exhausted. My mood is ALL OVER the place. I cry a lot. I'm anxious all the time. I went from sleeping at least 6-7 hours to maybe 4 very restless hours. My trazadone didn't even help last night and Xanax got me relaxed but only 3 hours of sleep. My question is, is this still part of the withdrawals?
Due to financial issues I haven't been able to fill my topamax script and won't be able to for at least another week. How will this affect me and when I can refill should I just start back up like nothing happened? So far I seem ok.
I gained 40 pounds in six months, need to wear glasses because of my blurry vision, foggy thoughts, bad short-term memory, extreme dry mouth, body spasms, facial tics, grinding teeth, palpitations, slurred speech, and extreme nausea. I have been to many doctors over the years and they all say that these side effects had nothing to do with my medication.
I really wish that you would tell us how long that the whole withdrawal lasted. I am on day 9 and still have those stupid "brain zaps" and just not feeling like myself, however, I really don't know what myself feels like since I have been on Effexor for 5 years and Paxil 3 years prior to that. Before that I was hooked on an illegal drug to deal with depression I didn't know that I even had. Wow...
