Topamax and wellbutrin for weight loss

Common Questions and Answers about Topamax and wellbutrin for weight loss

topamax

I take topamax to control seizures and I must say that I am surprised doctors prescribe it for weight loss alone, and that you are willing to put up with the side effects of it just for weight loss when there are other weight loss drugs out there. The "goofiness and loss of words" bothers me tremendously. I have been taking it since April and that hasn't abated any. Unfortunately I did not experience any weight loss or loss of appetite from it like everyone says. I take 200 mg a day.
But, I am seriously contemplating asking my MD to prescribe topamax for me for weight loss. I think maybe my blood pressure will also decrease, and I am sure my feet and joints won't hurt anymore if I can get this extra 60 lbs off me. As I said, I am 66 years young, and am interested if any other young seniors are in my shoes. Any comments for the older group will be greatly appreciated.
Hi, my psychiatrist just put me on wellbutrin, and topamax as a mood stabilizer. I know that weight loss is associated with both of those, especially the topamax. I was ok with that, I've been wanting to lose about 30 lbs. anyway. But I'm on low doses of both, so I didn't expect to see much weight loss, if any, and especially not so quickly. My appointment at the psychiatrist was on October 7 and when they had me get on the scale there, it read 131 lbs.
Im worried about the memory loss and inability to form sentences mostly!!! I am hoping for a weight loss but wont put too much hopes on it. I am like a diet coke addict! SO it would be shocking if it ends up making that taste bad if thats true?
Take good care of yorself, get exercise, eat well and the weight will come off. I wouldn't take meds for weight loss unless you were morbidly obese, which you obviously aren't. Good luck with your wee one. Don't be discouraged.
I have been using wellbutrin xl 300mg for 15 days and my appetite almost gone but I did not lose weight yet,I do exercises 4 times a week. Has anyone taken wellbutrin or topamax for weight lose? Why topmax cause loss weight? Please share your experience about this medicines ,how long?how many kg lost? mg etc...
very silly, I know. I saw a psychiatrist for the absurdity and was put on paxil, ativan, topamax, lexapro, etc...and due to gaining weight I stopped going to her and was off of all meds. 2 yrs later I started wellbutrin xl 150, 6 months later 300mg...not working but have been very happy with the weight loss so I don't want to stop (gained LOTS during paxil period) I just want the wellbutrin to work so bad that I keep giving it more time to see if it kicks in (about 4 weeks now on 300).
After being on welbutrin for 2 months I had lost 25lbs. I was suprised and happy with the weight loss and energy. However, I couldn't sleep at night and started feeling like my heart was skipping a beat or maybe having an extra one everyday. My blood pressure and pulse were crazy high compared to what they normally were and at times I literally felt sick at the sight of meat on my plate. (Weird, I know).
I am on wellbutrin for the last 4 weeks and have lost 5 lbs. The way I can describe it is, I don't feel like I'm starving when I get hungry. It takes away that feeling for me. I still eat, but I eat less and feel fuller sooner.
hello heisvonh, I am also on prozac, wellbutrin, lamictal, and now topamax to help shed some weight. I was wondering how much weight you have lost total? Like everyone else, I gained 65 lbs. with meds., and lost 15lbs. with wellbutrin, and I am now hoping to shed some more with the topamax. I am depressed with the weight gain, so I am hoping this works. Let me know.
I have been taking both wellbutrin SR, 450mg/daily, and topamax, 200mg/bid for a year and 9 months now, and the combination is great! The topamax is an anti-seizure drug, works for migraines (which I only had as a teenager) causes weight loss and is a mood stabilizer. It also intensifies the effects of many other meds. I have lost over 140 lbs, and just recently began to lose a little more. I started out at 300 lbs, and this mornings weighed 166.8.
I am on 500 mg and it has done nothing for weight loss. It actually constipated me for the first few days and gave me heartburn and chest pain. I don't know if that is normal or not. My doctor says I am insulin resistant and he thinks this will help me loss weight. Should I ask to increase it? Or is it to soon?
(Even though not bi-polar, Lamictal is working well with the wellbutrin for me) The wellbutrin/Lamictal caused a 50lb weight loss but I was nauseous for months. The wellbutrin doesn't help with the anxiety I was having so I had Lexapro added. That did make me gain weight so I went off it and just take Klonopin for anxiety. Now I am having more problems with depression so my doctor increased my Lamictal dose. If you take Lamictal, you MUST increase/decrease doses SLOWLY.
Hi, I have been on Effexor XR for 3 years and I have gained about 40-50pounds, most when my dose was increased to 225, now I am on 75mg b/c I'm getting ready to wean off the medicine in a couple of weeks, and I haven't lost anything yet. My eating habits have not changed and I exercise. I have always been underweight and I could eat whatever I wanted...I'm only 26 years old...I know my metabolism has changed some, but not enough to pack on 40 pounds.
My doctor prescribed it for my migraines as I had requested it since all the other treatments seemed to have weight gain as a side effect while this one was the opposite with weight loss as a possibility. A year ago I tried Sibelium for 3 months and it worked but I gained 12 pounds in a month and a year later those pounds have not budged.
Your doctor is right. wellbutrin at 450 mg already has 4 times the risk for seizures as other antidepressants, and the risk goes up by another 10 times if you increase to 600 mg (see http://www.rxlist.com/wellbutrin-drug/warnings-precautions.htm). One option might be to try topamax. It's used off label as a mood stabilizer, it's an anticonvulsant (lowers seizure risk), and tends to cause weight loss. It doesn't work mood wise for everyone though, and not everyone loses weight.
I am taking it for my depression and hoping it helps with weight loss. I lost about 10 lbs on topamax, and then regained it when I came off. I have also heard stories about peoples' hair falling out. Has any of this ever happen to you?
I also had this kind of crazy weight loss on topamax. For me, it turned out to be the combination of the dosage of topamax and other medications that made the weight loss so severe. I noticed that once I stopped taking wellbutrin and as my headaches improved I lowered my dose of topamax, the weight loss eased off and it took about 6 months to get back to my usual weight. Now I am back watching what I eat, instead of eating everything in site and losing weight!
I'm getting more used to the symptoms of the buzzy/shock things and tracers. My doctor has added wellbutrin SR 150 to the mix. I've noticed a complete loss of appetite with this mixture. I now have to force myself to eat. If I smell something good I may become curious and go taste it, but there's not much interest, really. I'm still on the Ativan, for another month. They barely help at 1mg. He told me to take 2 if I needed them. Gee thanks, so then I'll run out even faster.
I have been on a cocktail of topamax (from 50 to now 100 mg) a day, wellbutrin XL (450 mg) a day and now Busbar 15 mg a day for about a year. The topamax has been to keep my weight down with the Anti-depressants, which has been difficult in the past. That has been quite successful, I'm the thinnest I've been in a long while. But I'm noticing that my thick curly blond hair has now become straw and thin. Does this has to do with the topamax? Should I stop? Please advice.
First of all I am not a nurse ot doctor but I wanted to comment on the hair loss. I have also been prescribed topamax for pain, mood stabilizer and weight loss so I have been looking a lot on the net. I have seen a few things about hair loss. I wanted to comment on that. I have been a hairstylist for 24 years and one thing that I have noticed without doubt is that when one of my customers loses a significant amount of weight (25 lbs or more) they always have a loss of hair.
Take topamax for 1-2 months on its own to lose 10 pounds then start the Paxil again while continuing the topamax. Plan B if Plan A fails i.e. no weight loss return to wellbutrin, worked for me before, did not cause weight gain didnt always help with anxiety but better than nothing! Here it goes... Day 1...took after meals, drank lots of water and ate a banana (to avoid tingling feelings), only side effect is feeling bit sluggish but also didn't have much sleep last night...
When I weaned myself off, I fell into a deep depression and had to find myself a new dr. I started topamax and wellbutrin, but the wellbutrin is making my thoughts and heart race. So I have to go off. The topamax is making me foggy, so I'll have to lower my dose. The dr. is recommending that I go on Abilify, but I'm terrified of weight gain. (I'm bulimic). I did take the 2 mg.
I have been struggling with Bulima for 3 and a half years now and Im getting help. I want to try a drug to help me with the withdrawel affects of the crutch of eating for emotional needs. My Psychiatrist said Celexa, Prozac or Zoloft are my options. Celexa being the main one. I am concerned that I will gain weight though from their affects. I am also concerned it will increase my appetite. Will it help me with my mental addiction for the need to eat all the time?
a bunch of years ago i was in a car accident and was pretty immobile for a long time and gained a ton of weight. when i was up and around again i was totally grossed out with myself, i was up to 178 and cut out all wheat from my diet. ALL of it. most sugar too, except for natural sugars in fruit etc.. i lost 60 lbs in 6.5 months. it was so easy because after a week and your body has detoxed from it you literally don't even want bread, pasta etc. anymore...
If your dr is putting u on anti-depressants for your migraines ask about if you would benifit from wellbutrin I had weight loss from that one and if i remember right it will help with your headaches or i know for a fact topamax works well on my cronic migraines anyway but I have to take other stuff for the mental side. those are a couple suggestions you can discuss with your doctor.
Geodon is now approved for Bipolar, and is what I take. It's nuetral for weight gain. Zoloft can have weight loss as a side effect, and Topomax has weight loss as a side effect. All three of these meds combined and I lost weight without even trying. Of course when I lost my insurance and wasn't able to take them any more I gained it all back in record time. 20 pounds in a month. Of course Iwas very depressed and eating really badly, as well as being sedentary.
