topamax and stomach pain

I woke up a few days ago with a lot of pain in my stomach and spine. It is not time for my menstrual cycle nor have I overexerted myself with physical labor. I have sharp stabbing pains from time to time in my stomach and my spine aches. I urinate frequently and they are clear for the most part and without pain or odor. I have Hoshimoto's Thyroiditis and take Levothyroxin, Topomax for migraines and birth control for irregular menses.

He is complaining of lower back and stomach pain and burning while urinating. Should he go to the ER now? can he stop taking that drug immediately?

All of a sudden, I have experienced joint pain and stiffness. I found out that topamax can lead to these side effects. however, I have gradually gone off the topamax and have quit taking it for approximately 4 - 5 days. Today I am still stiff (shoulders, knee, wrist and ankles) and my ankles are swollen. Do you think this is still a side effect of Topamax in my system?

I have taken pain killers that made my depression worse, and pills for bad stomach that made anxiety go through the roof. I once took Migraleve tablets with anti depressants and had a fit. Very scary. Medication can give all sorts of side effects. I have had migraines all my adult life and depression for 30 years. You are right, migraines are not half as bad as depression. I just take over the counter pain killers for my migraines now.

I have reduced quite all my medication and I feel like slowly back to being the person i used to be I am currently taking only 50mg of Topamax and I can say that the pain disappeared almost completely and the goal is to be free of this medicine at year end. Also I have feelings of anger, because I think I've been taking Topamax for over 10 years without any sense. I think I have found what was the source of all my chronic pain and Topamax was not helping me at all.

We have seen a pediatric neurologist, admitted to the hospital and she is still in bed with nausea, vomiting and frontal head pain. We have had a negative MRI/MRA, spinal tap and blood work was ok with just WBC and platelets elevated. We started with 5 mg of maxalt, naproxen, compazine, zofran, toradol and phenergan injections. No ease of pain or symptoms! Spinal tap last Wednesday and that night, again severe headache, nausea, and vomiting.

my whole digestive track and stomach has been messed up since, i started with constipation, now i have diarrhea often, stomach cramps, and loss of appetite from the topamax. i started smoking weed this year, and its the only thing that helps me eat and maintain my weight. but recently i had pooped mucus alone, right after i had pooped. and it happened again tonight. but i have no blood in it, no irritation, inflammation, anything else whatsover. just stomach problems.

I took Topamax for awhile trying to stop a "non-stop" headache. The side effects were bad enough for me that it was discontinued. The lack of balance and eye pain I had were what my neurologist decided were reasons to discontinue. The headache pain was as bad on Topamax as it was off Topamax, so it just wasn't the drug for me....

Now I take a supplement high in potassium daily and the pins and needles is gone and the pain in the elbows and wrists only appears during bad weather. I've had issues with the Topamax making me so loopy and have just come down on my dose because of it. I'm now experimenting with adding supplements that are suppose to help control migraines with the lower dose of Topamax. I have also lost the ability to sweat while on Topamax, weird...

I agree with u...I was not on meds either...many Drs offered them instead of finding a dx...being post op, I am on a small dosage to try and control the HA's as I still need a few more surgeries....some of my pain is not touched with the small dose I am taking as the pain is joint pain and Topamax is to help control HA's.....

I started Topamax and it makes me feel so bad. The pain is worse than before? is this normal? my feet hand and vision are all affectative. Numbness in feet and hands, just plain can't see. blured vision. lousy feeling .

Wat001.....hi there!!!!!Very glad you are feeling better after getting rid of that extremely toxic & horrible so called medication that is complete poison!!!!!!!! At one time, when I used to take dopamax for supposed bipolar mood swings (which this awful drug only worsened) under force from a psychiatrist & psych ward I was in, it caused severe stomach pain, mental confusion & blackouts, and caused my skin to turn yellow!!!!!!!

Hi.....I have both migraines and depression. My neuro doc put me on Topamax (I take it daily) for migraine management and when I do get "breakthrough" migraines I take Maxalt. The Topamax has worked wonders!!! But it isn't without some nasty side effects. Initially it causes your feet, hands and face to tingle (that goes away)....but it plays hell with your memory (not everyone gets this, but I did). It takes away your appetite (at least it did for me).

If you think reflux might be a part of the problem you can try elevating your head when you sleep, cutting down on caffeine and carbonated beverages, and avoid eating anything within a few hours of bedtime. Antacid could help as long as you don't take them at the same time as your other pills. It can change how well they are absorbed. Hope you feel better soon.

Within a week it went from pins and needles to a piercing pain as if being stung by bees and kept getting worse. They stopped the Topamax and within a week all the sensations that were happening while I was on Topamax went away. Suffered all that and didn't even lose a lb.

You might have Crohns disease but it could be a food allergy or something else. It is good to get the colonoscopy done. I had one so far. It is good if you can have the one where they give you pills instead of the drink to clean you out. Maybe you can call ahead and find out who does that. Regarding the wavy lines (aura) and headaches following they do sound like migraines. You should see a neurologist for this. They can do a electroencephalogram to see if you do.

Recently, my migraine symptoms changed, so the hospital did a CAT scan. They didn't find anything unusual, so I am assuming that means none of my doctors thinks there are any white lesions on the brain to indicate MS. I am finding myself having more balance issues, though, and really bad pain in the hip area. It's usually in one hip more than the other, and not necessarily always the same hip. Lately it's the left hip.

I read that topamax can have joint pain as one of the side effects and have weaned myself off the med. I have not taken any for the past 4-5 days. However, I am still very stiff and achy and my ankles have been swollen for the past 2 days. Do you think that this is still a side-effect of the topamax or maybe something else?

I used to take Topamax for nerver pain, it was the only anti-seizure med that really worked well for the pain, and I had three attacks of kidney stones before I found out it was the Topamax causing them. I had to stop taking it, but was wondering if anyone else ever had this problem. I did a little research on it and in a small percentage of people it actually does do this, but my urologist only knew of one other person who took Topamax and had kidney stones.

I used to be on Topamax for a combination of problems. It made soft drinks etc. taste like metal and flat. My stomach was always upset - that was how I lost weight, not a good way to do it. I had "stupid" issues, it is nicknamed Dopamax by a lot of people. My hair started falling out so much that my hair dresser asked me if I was on chemo. With all of the side effects, I just told my doctors to forget it, to find something else.

I have had a upper GI due to pain in my stomach and they said I have acid reflux in my upper throat area, or something like that. I don't feel the reflux come up into my throat. I took Zantac for a few months and the pain went away. I generally have no symptoms. Lately, I was put on Topamax for my migraine and migraine associated vertigo and a side effect is GI reflux.

Doc says surgery is up to me for now and not necessary unless I cant handle symptons. They increased my topamax and 2 days later I felt like I was riding a speeding elevator. Anyone else have this effect from an increase?

The pain usually occurs while you are sleeping and you are awakened with the pain. Sometimes your eye will close slightly and wonder and your nose will run. Good luck to you and hope you can find a med that will work for you. I went thru several before I found one that worked for me. Good luck.

i seem to have mostly visual problems and some pain with my migraines.. my perception definately feels off and my eye gets really low on the right side of my head.. i was wondering .. does it make a difference in a dignoses with it being on one side of my head mostly?? and i seem to be so depressed ever since these symptoms started... i have been on all the antidepressents in the world..is it normal to have depression with migraines when they seem to be constant??

I have lost 25 pounds in less than a month and it keeps going and i am scared. I am not able to eat much because of my stomach pain but when I am able to I am only eating healthy things. I am having loose stool with blood and coughing up blood. My skin is also when you touch it to me hurts, when I put on my clothes and even when I sit down It hurts so badly. My fatigue is increasing to where I am just a vegetable, literally. I cant do much at all and I am growing so weak. Please I need help!
