topamax and mood

I have only been taking the Topamax for a week so it is hard to tell what is going on. I have had up and down mood swings. I think it might be the Topamax, though. The only reason I am hesitant to get off of it is that it keeps me from gaining weight from the Abilify, which I had been steadily doing. I am going to hang in with it and if it gets worse, I will go off of it. My doctor told me to take it at night so the worst side affects I will sleep through and it does help.

I am currently taking sertraline for mood swings and have been taking it for about 5 years. I also have recently been put on topamax for migraines. I have read about all this wonderful weight loss. If anything I have gained. Could these 2 medicines together be holding me back from losing> I would like to go off of the sertraline.

I take the birth control pill Minastrin 24 Fe and for about a month now I have been taking Topamax as a mood stabilizer. I recently had unprotected sex and I read that Topamax may interfere with oral contraceptives. If I still take my birth control pill at the same time everyday, should I be protected from pregnancy?

I have just been prescribed it as a mood stabilizer, I take it at night only (to decrease side effects and due to fatigue) and have titrated up to 50mg and will be upping to 75mg this week (25mg a week - going slow because I am pretty neurotic about meds) and will prob stop at 100 or 150mg as per Pdoc.

Hi, my psychiatrist just put me on Wellbutrin, and Topamax as a mood stabilizer. I know that weight loss is associated with both of those, especially the Topamax. I was ok with that, I've been wanting to lose about 30 lbs. anyway. But I'm on low doses of both, so I didn't expect to see much weight loss, if any, and especially not so quickly. My appointment at the psychiatrist was on October 7 and when they had me get on the scale there, it read 131 lbs.

However one lady who had this problem asked her pdoc and he advised selenium and zinc for med induced hair loss when she started losing hair (she thought Lamictal was the culprit but could not be sure) her hair loss stopped falling immediately. She took 200mcg of selenium (not mg) and 50 mg of zinc a day.

I found however, that Topamax was not very effective in treating my mood swings, whereas, Lamictal was an excellent mood stabilizer for me. I am currently taking 400 mg. per day, which is the maximum dose. I also take Remeron, 10 mg. per day, which is an anti-depressant to help stabilize my depressive episodes and diazepam, 10 mg. 4 times a day to control my anxiety and panic attacks.

When I weaned myself off, I fell into a deep depression and had to find myself a new dr. I started Topamax and Wellbutrin, but the Wellbutrin is making my thoughts and heart race. So I have to go off. The Topamax is making me foggy, so I'll have to lower my dose. The dr. is recommending that I go on Abilify, but I'm terrified of weight gain. (I'm bulimic). I did take the 2 mg.

t it make sense to first treat the anxiety and than the possible mood disorder? Should I take both a SSRI and a mood stabilizer? Will see the doc again on Saturday.

havent took it today still cuz i want to stop freaking me out i was at a event yesterday took half a cup of liquor and freaked out remembering im on this and paniked made a scene couldne sleep like i dont kno now its still in my head can i stop it or is it ok to drink weekends atleas or here and there and is it tur if u never has w=seizures it may cause seizures in then long wong or if u stop it ive taken like i said in my system i have like 200 mg ive taken 4 of 50 mg so far have yet to keep g

For a while when I first started taking the topamax I was really worn and out and felt weird all of the time, but I've been on it since the end of Aug '08 and that doesn't happen anymore. I do get drowsy when I take it, but I just take it before bed now. I don't know about the diarrhea thing though. Were you eating with them? Or were you allergic?

Physically I pretty much dodged the bullet. This is day 15 and mentally I am still exhausted. My mood is ALL OVER the place. I cry a lot. I'm anxious all the time. I went from sleeping at least 6-7 hours to maybe 4 very restless hours. My trazadone didn't even help last night and Xanax got me relaxed but only 3 hours of sleep. My question is, is this still part of the withdrawals? I am so ready to be myself again :( Another thing, I am on 50 mg topamax for migraines. 25 in the am.

Everybody is different and responds to medication differently. The best and most all-around useful mood stabilizer for me has been Topamax. It is an anti-convulsant, also indicated for propylaxis of migraines (which I also have). The great side effect, if you're overweight, is WEIGHT LOSS. Be careful, though. I've lost 54 lb. in 10 months; now underweight and have continued to lose, in spite of attempts to gain.

So I'm on Tegretol for mood stabilizing and Topamax for migraines, I think my aggression and outbursts ar getting worse. This cannot happen, I have 3 young children that I care for all day, I stay at home w/ them. I feel as though I am about to crack up, I told my husband, I told my mom, no one knows how to deal w/ this, neither do I. I just dwell on everything, I can't can't shut my thoughts off, I just keep thinking and thinking about things that **** me off.

Hard to say because being that I have schizoaffective disorder I require both a mood stabilizer and antipsychotic. However, as regarding a mood stabilizer I was able to function with Lamictal by itself. Sometimes however it requires an adjunct and Neurontin is often used. Klonopin is an anti-anxiety medication that has mood stabilization properties. Your psychiatrist may be tapering you off this because a person can build up a tolerance to it.

Hi I would also like to comment as well.... I am taking topamax and I take it for migrane prevention.. and not for seizures....Should we still be wearing a medical alert even tho we do not have seizures>?

My eyes, nose, and everything else is dry to the point of I had to rush to the eye doctor (had extremely dry eye), nose sores that bleed, and now my hair is falling out. The doctor did hormone and thyroid test and just called they are normal. He put me on biotin for a month. Should I stop the topamax or go further with blood work since my family has problems. He said the biotin and a multivitamin should help but I have mood swings, constaption, headaches...just don't know? Any ideas.

he said it was an off label usage of it as a mood stabilzer. the topamax gave me really bad restless feelings i felt nauseas and it gave me these buzzing sensations in my head.

Has any one else experienced something like this with Topamax? Has anyone quit cold turkey and are there any harmful effects from doing so?

Topamax is for migraines

I definitely lost weight and I am little to begin with. Recently I went off of Topamax and have gained weight back for sure :( So the weight loss is one of the better side effects LOL. The biggest side effect for me was the hands and feet (and sometimes lips) tingling. Not all the time but especially in the beginning. Numbness too. They weren't bothersome enough for me to stop taking it, though. I hope it works for you.

I know with myself it was going to be used as an adjunct mood stabilizer so see how it goes and if it works and you can tolerate it has been used as a mood stabilizer for a while and one that is generally safe and effective.
