Avatar f tn Hi. I take 125mg/day for migraines and have more trouble than ever keeping my weight off *BUT* there is always a lot more to the story than that. What is your story? lol....in other words, what are you doing/trying to do to lose or what were you doing before to maintain your weight? I used to weight over 200 lbs and have kept my weight in the "normal" range for 5 years now, even though I struggle keeping it where I *wish* it was to be "perfect.
Avatar m tn Dr. W. I'm sure you've heard the phrase "fat and happy." Well, it's not just folklore. The same carbs that make you fat (and contribute to diabetes and other problems) also make you happy. It's simple science: Carbs allow more of the amino acid L-tryptophan to penetrate your brain. The L-tryptophan triggers your brain to make more serotonin, and the serotonin makes you feel happier. It's as simple as that!
Avatar f tn After discussing my weight(I lost 30 lbs since the level was taken) and the fact that I was on a low carb diet at the time the tests were taken, the test were re-done and a CT was ordered. The new level was 217. Still high but down almost 200. Now without CT results the doctor is suggesting a biopsy. I believe this is due to negative hepatitis tests and recently switching to Topamax from Depakote after 18 years. Is a biopsy really necessary?
Avatar f tn Low carb no carb diet! It's perfectly safe.
1054985 tn?1257173275 I'm not on Atkins, but I do practice low carb, and eat a fair amount of fish, and a little poultry now and then (organic, only!) Red meat I save for special occasions. But FORGET white flour and white sugar and ALL the fakes (as a nod to the Aspartame thread). Stevia just tastes nasty to me. I eat a heap of low glycemic index veggies and fruit the rest of the day. If I do crave something sweet, then unrefined real cane sugar is the only thing I'll bake with.
Avatar f tn This can be done by carefully adjusting your insulin doses and combine with eating a low carb diet (the low carb will reduce your insulin requirements and thus also protect you from going too low or high). I recommend the book diabetes solutions by Dr. Richard Bernstein. HE describes how to get excellent control using insulin and lwo carb diet. Even if you don't end up going as low carb as he recommends, you can still use what he teachers and a lower carb approach to get good control.
1301089 tn?1290666571 I'm doing low carb now. How I miss my sweets! Low-carb diet trumps low-fat on 'good' cholesterol By STEPHANIE NANO Associated Press Writer The Associated Press Monday, August 2, 2010 5:15 PM EDT NEW YORK (AP) — Over the long term, a low-carb diet works just as well as a low-fat diet at taking off the pounds — and it might be better for your heart, new research suggests. Both diets improved cholesterol in a two-year study that included intensive group counseling.
231441 tn?1333892766 Has anyone tried very low carb diet for managing diabetes, and preventing or minimising the use of insulin? It appears that all of a sudden my blood sugar is now 'diabetic' and I can't seem to tolerate regular diet any more if I want normal blood sugars.
1301482 tn?1325722991 Who has done a low carb diet that worked well? Can you give me any tips for low carb snacks/meals?
Avatar f tn I would also eliminate gluten along with the low carb diet. If you try the low carb diet, make sure you take the recommended nutrients. They are recommended for a reason. And some people get silly with the diet and don't take in any carbs - DON'T DO THAT! Maybe you can call your doctor to make sure this diet is safe for you.
Avatar f tn Hi there im on a diet and was wondering what kind of fruits would be low carb or any kinda low carb snacks for in between meals or at lunch time ?
Avatar f tn Is it better to eat a low Carb diet or a low calorie diet..Isn't stuck between the 2,I need to lose72 lbs..n I don't want it to take forever to lose it.I also expertise 6 days a week for 1 1/2 hrs.Just confused about the two. Also I'M on 3 medications that cause weight gain. And I'M wondering as long as I do overeat will I still gain weight from these meds. Thanks Brenda!!
Avatar n tn A little while ago i had a nondiabetic doctor recommend a low carbohydrate diet to help keep my blood sugars low and when i mentioned it to my endocrinologist she said that that type of diet puts extra strain on the kidneys and since diabetics are already prone to kidney problems they should avoit it. i would recommend that at your next doctor appointment you ask to be referred to a dietician to go over the proper diet aspects for a diabetic.
1286779 tn?1400012806 Low carb high protein for sure helps. Eat low glysemic index. foods and stay away from highly processed foods and sugars. Eat real food and organic as much as you can. We also avoid gluten and only eat cereal, oats, bread, crackers, pasta and snacks that are gluten free. We also use raw goats milk from a local dairy farm, in our cereal and eat organic meats and eggs (farm fresh) as much as possible. These are all working well for my daughter who is nine and born without a thyroid gland.
451075 tn?1210258648 Yes, it's totally safe. I have used low-carb diet for long time. I eat alot of protein (all meat and fish (as long as it is fresh and un-contamintated), cheeses and eggs). It's known now that eggs do not have this bad influence on cholesterol as thought before. It's also known that fat doesn't make you fat. So, I never look at calories, I only look at carbohydrates. Besides the protein I eat alot of vegetable (except high carb veggies like carrots, borccoly etc).
Tbd The principle of low carb diet is restricting carbs, particularly all grains, sugars, starchy veges and sweet fruits, and eating a diet that focusses more on protein, low carb plant foods (veges and non-sweet fruits), some nuts, and healthy fats. While this may sound a little intimidating it is actually pretty easy and there are lots of great recipe ideas online easily accessible. key words will be low-carb, and keto.

Avatar n tn Hi, I would change my diet to a low carb diet. A lot of news has been coming out about low carb and I am doing low carb. It has really helped me keep my BG down to an acceptable leval. You might try researching the Dr. Bernstein diet for diabetics. It really works and does not affect a person in any bad way. You also do not have to starve yourself on this diet. I eat between 2000 up to 3000 calories a day but those calories are coming from low carb food.
Avatar m tn Barb, I was on low-carb diet for a long time, but recently I found out that for many people like me, eating a low-carb diet may weaken the thyroid or even cause hypothyroid. If you google "low carb diet and low thyroid", you will see that eating "safe" carbs like sweet potatoes or rice will help out your thyroid a lot. http://chriskresser.
1451080 tn?1438527660 As a family of 5 with two children and myself being on meds and only one person working, I need some economical low carb ideas for meals and/or snacks. The low carb thing is new to my entire family. Any info would be helpful. Also, any info on how to naturally lower my blood pressure is also welcome. Thanks!
Avatar m tn Harvard researchers put pre-obese people (they had just lost 10-15 percent of their body weight) on three different diets—a low-fat, high-carb diet; a low-glycemic diet with fewer carbs; and a high-protein, high-fat, Atkins-style diet. Each participant ate the same number of calories on each diet, yet at the end of the study, they found that people burned the most calories at rest while on the Atkins diet.
Avatar f tn my doctor had me on a high protein, low fat, moderate carb diet, with certain exercises, daily and I was still gaining weight in spite of adequate thyroid hormones. At the beginning of this year, I, finally, ditched my doctor's diet, cut my bread consumption by about 75-85%, in other words, my maximum is 1 slice of bread/day or if we have pizza, I don't get bread, etc...
Avatar m tn there are a few links that come up and they all basically say a low GI diet. Some low GI foods would be wholegrain brown bread, brown rice and no added sugar Alpen. They satisfy u for longer and are slow releasing so that there isn't too much insulin produced to break down the sugar. What we need to avoid is sugar rushes coz we cant handle them an put on weight.
