Common Questions and Answers about Topamax and kidney damage

topamax

/ I had all those symptoms and worse Ive seen cardiologist, neurologist, and 10 trips to the emergency room and 2 months into topamax and all those side affect are gone. just drink water...
it stopped when I stopped the topamax.. My doc wanted me to go on Nuerotin, and I wanted to retry topamax, as I was afraid to go on Neurotin, as it is a nasty drug! So... no side affects this time as I'm taking it 50mg 2X daily...except the hair loss... now my hair is then, see through hair follicles, a buch of hair in my brushes...and my hair was ALWAYS thick... always always thick :( Now I just want off... i want off of everything and I'll deal with the seizures unmedicated...
I have digenerative disc disease and my neirologist just prescribed topamax, he said it would help with the pain and tingling but could result in weight loss. I am wondering if prescribing topamax for ddd is common among neurologists? I can't seem to find any other information related to topamax as a pain med, only information I have is that it's a powerful drug with lots of side effects, most not so good. The weight loss aspect is the only plus...
I have been taking topamax for 6 years for miagraines and seizures.I went up on the topamax slowly ( I take 100mg but I started out at 25mg). I will tell you that I was groggy so make sure you take it at night. I also had some problems with concentrating and that lasted about a month. I will say that not having the migraines was wonderful so ifyou can hang for a month you will feel better. The really great thing about topamax is that over 4-6 months of being on the med I lost about 50 lbs.
I have only been on Topamax for my migraines since November 2010 and by January I had four kidney stones. One in my left kidney and three in my right. Now I have been taken off Topamax and it was so far the best medication for my migraines I was on 100mg of Topamax and went from having a migraine everyday to once a month. I miss Topamax but the pain of my kidney stones was much worse.
I use to take topamax and prozac together for my Depression, Anxiety, and Bi-polar disorder. Topamax works great with my body. I have a what i call a binge eating disorder and it took control of it and i lost 50 pounds in 3 months. It also helped my Mood swings due from my bi-polar. But last year i started itching like crazy whenever i got hot. And it wasnt just like scartch scartch then it goes away, it was like all over and i felt like a crack addict.
Hi, I have been taking a very low dose of Topamax for probably a year now and it has really helped me. I have ocular migraines but had begun having daily over the temperol/left eye pain migraine pain during the day. Working for a doctor he tried me on the Topamax at just the 25mg and it stopped them completely.
Fortunately, God was on her side because she was smart enough to stop the Topamax and go to the emergency room before she developed an attack of acute narrow angle glaucoma (symptoms severe eye pain, headache, nausea, vomiting, almost complete vision loss.) Her ocular pressure was actually only slightly elevated and with cessation of the Topamax, her pressure returned to normal in a day, while it took over a week for her vison to return to normal.
There is one called Follicle Booster which is expensive, but helps a lot. And drink tons of water. Topamax is dehydrating and water will help the tingling sensations you get, along with the brain fog that comes with it. A couple of gallons of water a day will help. That's a lot, but you'll notice the difference. Plus you need to replenish your electrolytes with an occasional sports drink. Again, speaking from experience here. Good luck!
The chiropractor found out and gave me an adjustment once, and I never had another kidney stone to this day. That was a few years ago. So, at this point, I am going to cooperate with my neurologist and my primary care physician.
There is absolutely no way to predict who will get this side effect and it can occur even at very low doses. If you are already taking Topamax and you notice any early signs of vision loss or eye pain please see an ophthalmologist immediately.
Stories like this make me so mad!! As for what can help you, I dont know..ive never had kidney stones but my mom and brother have and nothing helped them when they were in the worst of it either. The only thing i can suggest to you is this... can you get them removed /crushed via ultrasonic waves? I think they call it lithotripsy (sp?). THats what my mom had done..she sat in a hottub and ultrasonic waves thru the water shattered her stones.
It can also predispose to kidney stones by effecting the same enzyme in the kidney as acetazolamide - therefore the two may be additive in the risk of kidney stones. Kidnet stones can be very painful and have the potential to damage the kidney. The side effects and risks need to be weighed with the benefit with your doctor. You may be ok by keeping well hydrated etc but perhaps their may be a better headache preventative than topamax if you continue to take Diamox.
This is so embarrassing but due to mental health issues and some serious family issues going on I recently became very depressed and took 8 750s. I am 21 weeks and terrified of the damage I may have done to my baby. I am scared to talk to my doctor and am hoping someone can give me some advice.
I also have permanent kidney damage. First I went to the ER and they discovered the cyst, then they sent me to the OB GYN who had delivered both my kids who then did an ultrasound and sent me to a urologist. The urologist then sent me back to my OB GYN because even though it was on my bladder and ureter; it was a female cyst and he didn't deal w/those. Then my OB Gyn's office sent me to DSI to have a cat scan and when I called for the results they told me there was nothing wrong w/me.
This is going to seem like a weird questions, but were you ever put on benedryl (diphenhydramine) for the extra pyramidal effects? As a Paramedic, this is what we give patients who suffer from this, and most patients are usually sensitive to other benzodiazapines as well and may continue having the symptoms for a long time. Many of these meds are time-release and/or are fat-soluable, and are designed to stay in your system for days or weeks...
I've been taking 500mg metformin myself and I have not experienced any weight loss. I am actually taking it for diabetes treatment. But it has not helped with my weight loss.
If you have issues to gluten it cause many of the same symptoms and cause other deficiencies other than magnesium such as b12, iron, and vit d. Do to the damage in the gut your body cannot absorb them. Also maxalt has artificial sweeteners which is a huge migraine trigger.
For the past year, I have been experiencing burning and stinging in my vulva (which is NOT made worse by peeing), which comes and goes but can last for over a month and is extremely uncomfortable. The area looks normal, and there is no unusual discharge. The last time I had these symptoms was in March - they came on suddenly with a stinging sensation, and lasted for 6 weeks.
i do not have seizures and need to be able to think.tried 2 pills and said no way! . another said topamax.. another seizure drug that may help with pain with lots of side effects (Dopamax!) i said i wil not try.. then she said try the antidepressant Elavil. well that has lots of side effects too..will not take... but they would not give me pain meds! i am crying for almost 3 months.. now i am on all supplements from the Naturopath.
Yeah, tingling is one of my main symptoms as well...but it's not constant. If yours is constant, then I bet it has everything to do with the buldging disk!!! Good luck!!!
I don't have neuropathy but I know a few people who do. One of my closest friends has neuropathy and she takes topamax and it is the only medication like that (non-pain killer... I don't know what you'd call that... non-analgesic daily treatment) that works for her.
On top of the detox, you get ulcers and a virus! And now surgery? I'm stunned. Are you asking if pain med use long term causes damage? I know that several additives in strong pain meds like aspirin, tylenol and ibuprofen definately can cause ulcers (I got one from taking codeine and aspirin some years ago) and/or liver damage. As far as damage from the narcotic goes, I haven't heard of much, although I've read some posts on this site referring to liver damage from oxycontin/percodan.
I have talked to the neurosurgeon who did the surgery and he shrugged his shoulders and said I have no idea and sent me back to my neurologist. He gave me a series of injections in both shoulders and the pain stopped for a couple days but then came right back. Then we tried message therapy, it helps but only for a short period. And I have tried changing my pillows on my bed and sleeping in different positions and nothing seems to help for long term. What can I do?

If someone taking Topamax becomes flushed or overheated, they should relax in a cool place and drink plenty of water. Very rarely, drug withdrawal convulsions (fits) have been reported. Psychosis (often with paranoid delusions and prominent visual hallucinations) has also been reported. Rarely, the inhibition of carbonic anhydrase may be strong enough to cause metabolic acidosis of clinical importance.
The sensation is as if my head and neck are throbbing with pressure and I have to stop walking or slow down and stop and stand still for a minute or so to make the sensation stop. Sounds are muffled in rhythm with the pulsations and I sometimes feel as if I will pass out, but never have. There is no pain. I have been checked throughly by my GP, a cardiologist, and an electrophysiologist and none of them could find a cause.
I have no idea what is causing my problems, obviously, but am concerned about the kidney issue. OH, and I have been taking topamax for migranes, which I just found out I should have never, ever been prescribed, as it causes kidney stones. Anyone with kidney problems should never take the drug. So, now I am weaning off of that as well. Thanks for any thoughts.
yikes.... May I ask were u on a high dose of TOPAMAX and for a long time? I am on it for almost 2 yrs, but a very low dose.....I knew about possible kidney stones....now this...ugh....
It does not seem to be related to exercise since I can go for a run and feel nothing... but then I can be sitting and all of a sudden my calves (always both at the same time) start to ache and feel tight. Sometimes they feel so sore that I can almost not walk. Water seems to help on occasions. I can't understand why all of a sudden I may be becoming dehydrated so that doesn't seem logical... The aches come and go without warning and sometimes it's much worse than other times.
