Topamax and kidney damage

Common Questions and Answers about Topamax and kidney damage

topamax

Avatar f tn I have only been on Topamax for my migraines since November 2010 and by January I had four kidney stones. One in my left kidney and three in my right. Now I have been taken off Topamax and it was so far the best medication for my migraines I was on 100mg of Topamax and went from having a migraine everyday to once a month. I miss Topamax but the pain of my kidney stones was much worse.
Avatar n tn ( I thought I had a UTI and the test was negative for UTI but high in calcium and so they sent me to the urologist who then through the tests found the kidney stones and my ovarian cysts.) I was on special diets and lifestyle modifications and kept having to go to the urologist and follow up with my doctor over and over again, but I kept making more stones. The chiropractor found out and gave me an adjustment once, and I never had another kidney stone to this day. That was a few years ago.
Avatar f tn My doctor prescribes me loritab 10 and topamax. I have not started the topamax because he says that I have to take it everday for the rest of my life and stopping it quickly can cause anurisms. The headaches are more severe and come on very quickly now. Should I be concerned?
Avatar f tn Might want to consider checking into kidney stones...Topamax is known to cause a person to form them. I take Topamax for seizures and monitor possible side effects. Hope you get relief and find out soon. Please let us know what you are diagnosed.
284078 tn?1282616698 Fortunately, God was on her side because she was smart enough to stop the Topamax and go to the emergency room before she developed an attack of acute narrow angle glaucoma (symptoms severe eye pain, headache, nausea, vomiting, almost complete vision loss.) Her ocular pressure was actually only slightly elevated and with cessation of the Topamax, her pressure returned to normal in a day, while it took over a week for her vison to return to normal.
681148 tn?1437661591 never take topamax without water!!! But, for a very small number of people topamax can still cause kidney stones, which are extremely painful. My friend stayed on the topamax because without it she would be completely disabled and no other medication works for her... the kidney stones are something she would rather deal with than be completely physically disabled, but her situation is very severe and if I got kidney stones I would personally cease the medication.
214901 tn?1227567555 My doctor recently told me to stop taking it. I developed five kidney stones(3 in one, 2 in the other). Apparently Topamax can cause kidney stones! I wish my doctors had told me this a few years back! I would ask your doctor what side effects are normal, and what side effects might occur with this medication. Also ask about Metoporol for migranes. It worked for me. I hope you feel better. Good luck!
1781720 tn?1314842836 I'm on 100mg of Topamax twice a day. And I am wondering what kind of long term effects this medications can have on someone? I'm only 19, and I take it for daily migraines. I know Benzodiazepine has a bad stomach side effect, and with Topamax, I was wondering if that would happen with taking this high of a dose.
Avatar f tn One of my daughters has headaches and we have tried topamax and propranol and she has to many side effects fromthem. Has anyone else had this problem.
Avatar f tn t even know if the old one was normal or not, no md ever said I had a kidney issue, I just finished 12 weeks of treatment and am undetected but now I am freaked out by these kidney numera I wrote my md but have not heard back yet Doesn't anyone know or understnad this, I am having trouble understanding what I read from google searches Thanks CH
Avatar n tn Hi I would also like to comment as well.... I am taking topamax and I take it for migrane prevention.. and not for seizures....Should we still be wearing a medical alert even tho we do not have seizures>?
Avatar n tn I've been on Topamax for over a year now and it did that to me at first too, the numbness or tingling, mostly in my toes, I started out at 50mg. and now have been on 75mg, for 6 mos. I will say for me, those side effects have gone away and personally the good out ways the bad, you see, I had a mild stroke from the migraine I had, I have hemiplegic migraines and to me it is worth a little discomfort rather than go through that again!
Avatar f tn Doc says surgery is up to me for now and not necessary unless I cant handle symptons. They increased my topamax and 2 days later I felt like I was riding a speeding elevator. Anyone else have this effect from an increase?
Avatar f tn When HIV has low body weight (less than 60kg or about 130 lbs) they found higher kidney damage and found lowering Viread dose helps in this population. Is this transferable to HBV? I am low body weight at 115 lbs (eat healthy and exercise). I am worried about kidney damage as my age increases (now 41), with low body weight, and knowing this medication is long term/for life. How common is kidney damage on HBV only? I do not want to have to worry about my kidneys now too on top of HBV.
324184 tn?1308076203 If your daughter starts topamax, be sure to find a urologist. One of the major side effects of topamax is kidney stones. After taking it for my migraines for two years, I had kidney's full of stones. I have had three operations to rid myself of them and the surgery/recovery is very painful. The neurologist found out that I was in the hospital for a week ( the first time) and no kidding..yelled into the phone.. OH MY GOSH...ITS THE TOPAMAX!
Avatar f tn My doctor put me on topamax for migraines. She didn't have samples in the office, so she just gave me a perscription for 100 mg pills and said it wouldn't be a problem to start at that dosage. I've been taking this dosage for 7 days, and think it's too much. Is it too late to go back and start taking 25 mg the 1st week, 50 the 2nd, 75, and then 100 the 4th week (I looked up how it SHOULD be taken on the medical site).
998260 tn?1277731559 I am ok with topamax, but it has side effects - all of them do. I tried all of them - and for me, topamax had the least, but every one is different and you have to do what you can. Work up to a dose - and take the least amount that helps you the most. I used to take a smaller amount, but had to increase it. It may be best to see a neurologist. There are also surgeries - but that may not be best for you since yours was caused by an injury so it may be difficult to isolate the nerve.
1041303 tn?1421387341 I used to be on Topamax for a combination of problems. It made soft drinks etc. taste like metal and flat. My stomach was always upset - that was how I lost weight, not a good way to do it. I had "stupid" issues, it is nicknamed Dopamax by a lot of people. My hair started falling out so much that my hair dresser asked me if I was on chemo. With all of the side effects, I just told my doctors to forget it, to find something else.
Avatar m tn I am female so am not sure if our pain is the same, mine is from nerve damage done from a hernia repair. They gave me a topamax it works as a pain management pill and it stops the nerves from snappsing (being so sensitive). They could also try a nerve block in the back which would elevate all meds and just block the source of the pain. So yes the topamax has its drawbacks as it works all over your body, and nerve block can pinpoint were they block.
Avatar n tn It is interesting that their is not a single existing drug for slowing down liver damage from HCV. My assumption is that since the market is quite large, research goes on in this area and if there were hopeful lines of research they would be pursued.
Avatar f tn Unfortunately DMDs don't do anything for relief of symptoms. That's a problem caused by neurological damage. The accrual of damage is slowed down by the DMDs, so you'll get more of a chance to heal the damage than you had before. I would talk to your doctor about fatigue. I have the same problem - I get tired during the day, and sometimes I could just nod off at work! I take acetyl-L-carnitine, which is a nutritional supplement (OTC.) It seems to help.
82861 tn?1333453911 If there is no infection than your dog has kidney damage or kidney failure, and you will have to treat agressively to save the kidneys by using Sub Q fluid therapy, phosphate binders if the phosphate is also elevated, kidney saving herbs such as Rehmannia 8 and more. Please write back once you have additional test results. Thanks.
Avatar f tn I am not the type of person who likes to take medication and I have had a read on a couple of different forums about topamax and there seems to be a lot of negativity surrounding the drug with some pretty scary side effects. Can anyone enlighten me with some success stories?? Thanks, from New Zealand!
1415174 tn?1453243103 I was on topamax and amitriptilyne And I am back on the am amitriptilyne. I was on 200 mg 2x daily of topamax. Let me tell you. First if all that is an extremely high dose. But I could not remember a single thing. I would ask a question and no joke in less than 5 minutes be asking basically the same question with absolutely no recollection what so ever!!! As a full time college student this created some what of a problem when attempting to study.
Avatar m tn Then I read that heightened ammonia in blood can lead to kidney stones, hair loss and confusion...all side effects of Topamax. So, my thinking is that adding water and maybe some milk thistle or other liver supporting supplements may help tip the balance back. I am not sure those things work, this is just my theory on my limited research and there may be much larger issues at play. However, water and milk thistle can't hurt...right?
Avatar n tn Higher than normal level of creatinine may be attributed to a variety of issues such as blocked urinary tract, dehydration, muscle problems as well as kidney problems, such as kidney damage or failure, infection, or reduced blood flow. It is best that you discuss the management plan with his attending physician for proper evaluation.
