Common Questions and Answers about Topamax and dental problems

topamax

Avatar n tn Topamax is used for a lot of things it isn't necessarily labeled for. It's also used for treatment of nerve-related pain. Docs love to give it to patients with spine pain because it's not a narcotic. I know topamax has helped people with pain, but I wasn't one of them. I got every side effect on the fine-print enclosure, including a wooden tongue and numb, nearly paralyzed extremeties. Hadn't even titrated up to a "therapeutic" dose yet.
975514 tn?1324997938 I have been to a opthamoligist and that was my first confirmation. And i went to my neroligist he also said Topamax was not the cause of my eye sight problems. In fact i have a cateract in my left eye.I also stopped the Topamax for a little while. But i will go back to it in a couple months. It did help with the migranes. And i have been takeing it for Eight years with no problems. Good luck.
874521 tn?1424116797 I've had no issues in over two years, only two minor cavities which came from eating my favorite taffy candy. I've heard that opiates can decrease the production of saliva and that's what can potentially lead to dental problems. I brush, floss and drink fluoridated water so I haven't had many problems. However dental issues can be related to genetics and diet as well, so it'd be hard to tell what it came from unless everything else remained the same.
Avatar f tn I am glad you are at least getting the support of a Celebrate Recovery group, but am sorry you are not able to get "formal therapy" right now. It's really great though that you are taking the initiative to go to that group though. That's a big step in itself that you are doing it for yourself you know? Do you have insurance by chance? I know that's a bit of a personal question but insurance does usually help with therapy and such.
1512520 tn?1290258130 Hi, I was on 100mg Topamax for several years and never had sinus problems. How bizzaire....but like Selma said, everyone is different.
Avatar m tn they are both linked to dental problems...especially sojourns! so add those to my dental anxiety and im surprised my teeth are as good as they are!
658757 tn?1397796878 Hi Incontinentia pigmenti type 2, is a rare, genetic disorder having skin pigmentation that often is associated with ocular, dental, and central nervous system abnormalities. Due to the multitude of abnormalities, it is wise to involve a team of doctors consisting of Ophthalmologist, dentist, genetist, dermatologist and a neurologist so that appropriate treatment can be given. It is very important to have routine eye/checkups as there is a risk of serious eye damage.
Avatar f tn i seem to have mostly visual problems and some pain with my migraines.. my perception definately feels off and my eye gets really low on the right side of my head.. i was wondering .. does it make a difference in a dignoses with it being on one side of my head mostly?? and i seem to be so depressed ever since these symptoms started... i have been on all the antidepressents in the world..is it normal to have depression with migraines when they seem to be constant??
Avatar f tn It sure helps to know when you are not alone and others have the same side effects. Topamax helps my migraines and the weight loss is a plus too but the memory is suffering when it comes to writing and speech...like spelling...sometimes I know the word to use but can not even think of the letters to look it up so I end up using a different word in it's place...very frustrating. Speaking is another story. Sometimes it just isn't worth it to talk at all.
Avatar f tn Which is going to probably be a follow up question to this one. I am currently prescribed and take 200mg Topamax a day as a mood stabilizer along with 200mg zoloft. I often wonder if the Topamax might have anything to do with it. I was also recently diagnosed with vitamin B12 deficiency anemia. My blood panel didn't show anything wildly out of the ordinary other than that. What might cause something like this to happen? I take care of my teeth.
5792451 tn?1390934690 I have a hard protrusion that feels like bone (about the size of a dried pea) on the corner of my lower jaw. The exact term is "the angle of the mandible". I noticed it back when all of my Lyme symptoms started and I've had several CT scans and X-rays and none of my doctors have ever been concerned about it. My jaw and neck have been really sore again the past few days so I made an appointment with a dentist.
Avatar n tn I was shocked as I have had weak gums from a young age so have always brushed, flossed and used mouthwash and have never experienced the slightest discomfort with regards to my teeth. The dentist offered to do 2 fillings that day and I agreed, better to get them done early. Two weeks after my initial visit I was at a routine check up with my orthodontist. While there he commented on how healthy my teeth were.
Avatar n tn To cut through the chase, he gave 25MG of Topamax. All the drug did was make me lose my appetite and actually made me feel even more claustrophobic. I actually lost my last doctors appt since I got a panic attack while driving. Didn't it make sense to first treat the anxiety and than the possible mood disorder? Should I take both a SSRI and a mood stabilizer?
Avatar f tn I was on Topamax for about 3 years for sever migraines and saw nothing different with my thyroid problems. I researched Topamax and here are all of the possible side effects (doesn't look like your hair loss or thyroid problems can be attributed to Topamax): Autonomic Nervous System Disorders: Infrequent: vasodilation. Body as a Whole: Frequent: syncope. Infrequent: abdomen enlarged. Rare: alcohol intolerance.
Avatar n tn I tagged this question on to my last post, but I would really like an answer, so I will try again. Does poor dental problems (tooth decay) heighten the chance of HIV infection via oral sex?
Avatar f tn I have experienced the same! 6 months on topamax for migraine pain. Topamax caused seizures and thyroid problems plus numerous other smaller issues that compound to complete life altering issues. I cannot find a doctor in my network that will address this. They will only prescribe more drugs for the symptoms. They are incredibly uneducated in this next generation of doctors, only knowing how to prescribe drugs.
Avatar n tn I was taking Topamax, but it started my period up extremely heavy and painful. I do have Fibroid tumors in my uterus. Do you think it was the cause of it and if so do you know of something else I can go on to help with weight loss?
Avatar m tn So, all those years as a guinea pig and then I started to sleep constantly and then they treated depression to no avail and then they said it was ADHD and put me on Adderall and the Lamictal and the Topamax after trying all kinds of stuff. Well the adderall worked right away for energy because that is what I complained of was the chronic fatigue constantly from the fibromyalgia! So that was a Godsend. Then I got better with the Topamax.
410475 tn?1262942367 For a while when I first started taking the topamax I was really worn and out and felt weird all of the time, but I've been on it since the end of Aug '08 and that doesn't happen anymore. I do get drowsy when I take it, but I just take it before bed now. I don't know about the diarrhea thing though. Were you eating with them? Or were you allergic?
Avatar n tn my whole digestive track and stomach has been messed up since, i started with constipation, now i have diarrhea often, stomach cramps, and loss of appetite from the topamax. i started smoking weed this year, and its the only thing that helps me eat and maintain my weight. but recently i had pooped mucus alone, right after i had pooped. and it happened again tonight. but i have no blood in it, no irritation, inflammation, anything else whatsover. just stomach problems.
