Avatar m tn I thought the endodontist did a very poor job). So now I'm on my 2nd day of 500 mg Penicillin QID, and I'm still having pain. I've been taking 600 mg Ibuprofen Q6HR alternating with 1000 mg Acetometophin Q6HR, which helps, but I was wondering: how long should I wait till I possibly suspect the antibiotic is not doing the job on the infection? Also, it was recommended that I have a redo of said root canal, which I agree with, but...is that going to be a very difficult procedure?
Avatar f tn re asking if a swollen face and numbness can be caused by a cavity/decay underneath a crown, then yes, it can. The bacteria can travel underneath the crown, down the root canal of the tooth to the jaw bone and spread from there to the cheek, parts of the face, down the neck, etc. I would advise seeing a dentist immediately before the swelling continues to get worse.
Avatar m tn I recently had a crown on a rear bottom tooth. Dentist put in temp filling for few week - extremely painful for few days, gum went white underneath and lots of pain in the jaw / gum but no pain in tooth (prob due to LT problem with TMJ). I returned to dentist for crown prep and she said that due to this problem with temp filling and fact that hole went close to root cavity I may need RCT.
Avatar m tn I thought they had to get the tooth down to a similar size to crown the tooth after a root canal. If the tooth was ok for a crown would it not be a good candidate for a root canal? I've had two full days of antibiotics, very little relief - esp to heat. What I don't want them doing is putting the final crown on next Friday when this pain is still not pin pointed.
Avatar f tn I had my second molar on the left crowned four years ago. Immediately I got a sinus infection. ever since then the doctor has had me on antibiotics at least every 3 months for my newly developed "cronic sinusitis". I told my dentist that the tooth was hurting after the crown, but he said that sometimes residual - (or ghost pain) could be felt after a crown was placed on a tooth.
Avatar n tn It is possible that there was a residual infection on this tooth that was quiescent and was stimulated by the preparation for the crown. If this is the case I do not feel that the antibiotics would be a resolution of the problem in the long range. If this is the case it is possible that the root canal would have to be retreated.I do not know if a post was placed in this tooth and the possibility of a fracture must also be considered.
Avatar f tn Now the same tooth is causing me awlful pain and my dentist says I need root canal. Why would he ever put a crown on a tooth that had an infection. I was treated with antibiotics and I am being treated again 1.5 years later with antibiotics because of that same infection. I think he should have done a root canal then. I have had so many health problems since then I think it's from a tooth that never completely got rid of infection, otherwise I wouldn't need root canal.
Avatar n tn Many stronger cements draw moisture out of the tooth and can leave it very sensitive. If your tooth was prepared correctly so that the crown tucks under your gums, it should never leak or decay. Rest assured, your tooth should be just fine. I would be more concerned about the fracture under the crown. Hope this helps!
Avatar n tn Through a routine x-ray my dentist noticed that a root canal performed on tooth #18 (second molar, bottom left) had only be partially successful: one of the roots was completely filled and another was 3/4 filled), so he referred me to an endodontist for evaluation. The root canal work is over 20 year old, this tooth has never given me trouble since, and I don't have any symptom of infection (though I realize that some infections are asymptomatic). I am 46 year-old.
Avatar n tn Is it possible that my tooth will not recover after being filed down for a crown? The tooth was perfectly fine until it was prepped for a crown. I have highly sensitive teeth, I have undergone 3 root canals already and suffer from TMJ. I am leary of getting the permanent crown on if my tooth does not quit hurting even though he said he can go through the back and do a root canal. what are my options? Thank you.
Avatar n tn It may be that the crown does not fit properly or that the bite is off. Did the tooth hurt immediately after the crown was placed (even in the temporary crown) or did it take a while? Sometimes it does take a while for a root canal to be necessary. Is there any radiographic evidence of infection at the apex(tip) of the tooth. If it is not the bite or fit of the crown, it sounds like a root canal would be the way to go. Good Luck.
Avatar f tn he said there was a pinhole opening to the root but decided to fill the hole and build up the tooth and prepare for a crown. after the buildup and before the crown (2 days later) I went back because it still was bothering me. he said the bite was off and filed it down. the next day i was in extreme pain and could not reach the dentist. the following day i was put on antibiotics and told I needed a root canal. i had the first step of a root canal with a temporary filling.
Avatar f tn I would not place a permanent crown on the tooth unless it is totally asymptomatic. I would consider placing a temporary crown to keep the tooth from fracturing. It is possible that there is still an active infection present. I would advise you see the dentist that did the rct to determine if that pimple is from the tooth in question or an adjacent tooth.See a specialist if you need to.
Avatar m tn I am concerned the tooth will collect bacteria and cause further problems (smell, infection, etc). We were planning on going back to the dentist today to complain but wanted some ammo from other experts - please help.
Avatar n tn Right before Thanksgving I was experiencing pain from a tooth with a 3 year crown. The crown felt lower as if it had shifted, there was pain sensitivity to hot/cold and it hurt when I bit down. The dentist sent me to an endodontist who discovered infection. I had a root canal done and was put on a regime of antibiotics for 10 days. The bite was off for some reason and that was adjusted as well. All the symptoms subsided except now there is a pain/soreness on the SIDES of the crowned tooth.
Avatar n tn If you have an infection under a crown you will need to get the tooth treated if you plan on keeping the tooth. If it is decay, you will lose the tooth if you leave it untreated. If you have an abscess, you may lose the tooth and if the infection is left untreated it could possibly lead to septicemia or death (depending on location). You should see your dentist.
Avatar n tn ve moved since then and he is too far away. How can a nerve die under a crown? When he put the crown on my tooth hurt the whole time, he said he couldn't numb it any further and I would just have to put up with it.
Avatar n tn When I massaged the gum with my finger, I got a really foul taste from the gum. So I went to the dentist. He examined the gum and the crown/tooth joint and didn't see anything that looked bad. When he massaged the gum, he didn't see anything, but I still got a slightly foul taste (but not nearly as strong). He then did a percussion test, tapping firmly on all surfaces of the tooth, and I had no pain.
Avatar f tn While with the temporary crown I complained about pain on the tooth when biting down..The dentist response, the temporary crown is just too high! He went on with the positioning the permanent crown on, adjust the bite and send me home… I came back complaining that I still have the pain on the same tooth. OH! Then you need a root canal!! He said. My question is: Shouldn’t he figure that out before putting the permanent crown in? Is this lack of experience on his part?
Avatar n tn my number 18 tooth had a filling and my tooth broke, the broken piece was removed my dentist put in temp crown 3 weeks later permanent crown is put in but it pains more now the permanent crown than before ,can't bite or chew on that side of mouth do you know why ?
Avatar n tn The pain you feel upon tapping of the tooth is most likely coming from the bone below the tooth. If the tooth had an infection before the root canal, that infection would have spread to the bone. Once the infection in the tooth is removed (root canal), the bone can start healing. Bone takes a couple of months to heal however. When you tap on the tooth, you add pressure to this healing area, which can cause the dull ache you describe. Talk to your dentist about it.
Avatar f tn m 24 weeks pregnant and I imagine that this will be why antibiotics seem not to have been considered - that or there were no signs of any infection at the time of the actual treatment. Could this pain be a symptom of an infection developing since the treatment and therefore not caught on the x-rays? Should I really be getting this much pain 6 weeks after treatment? It doesn't seem to have diminished at all during the last 3 weeks when I have been wearing the temporary crown.
Avatar m tn There was an old silver filling in that tooth, which is quite a deep, and somehow a piece of the tooth came off. He did a white filling, but still, my mouth aches. After that, he suggested to me for teeth cleaning for two weeks and then crown next week. If the crown is not done, then apparently the teeth crack again. If the teeth pains again after the crown, then the next thing is a root canal. Friends.
Avatar n tn And was told the fractured tooth could be crowned but the adjacent molar showed signs of root infection, I had a root canal and crown done on the infected tooth about two years ago. My dentist is telling me that it will have to be extracted. Is there any alternative to extraction such as antibiotics?
Avatar m tn i'm posting xray of my #10 tooth, not sure if it is considered decay or infection but it is on the inside of the tooth not the surface. i posted story previously on this forum without xray image, thanks to all for your input i am trying to avoid bridges, implants and dentures. most dentists have est. $3,000 + for fixed bridge or implant. i currently have no pain unless i chew on hard food with tooth. can tooth be saved ? by root canal ?
Avatar m tn I have recently had a crown on a rear bottom tooth. I had lost part of my tooth due to excessing grinding and fillings kept coming out. The dentist put in a temp filling for a few weeks. This was extremely painful for a few days, the gum went white underneath and there was a lot of pain in the jaw / gum but no pain in the tooth. I think this was due to long term problems I have with TMJ but cleared up after a few days. I returned to dentist for crown prep and explained the situation.
Avatar f tn i have had another crown for 30 years without a single problem. just because a tooth has a crown things can still happen like root fractures but without a crown chances of loosing a cracked/root canaled tooth dramatically increases. if you crown a molar get gold. its much stronger and has less impact on surrounding teeth and gums. it will also last much longer.
Avatar n tn I am in horrible pain ~ My question is should I try to get an emergency extraction of the tooth that is black and hurting? Can the tooth be the cause of the ear infection? Please help, any advice is GREATLY appreciated...I am scheduled for the root-canal re-do in 6 days but I don't think I can make it.
