Common Questions and Answers about Tooth extraction in cats

teeth

Avatar n tn s got a tooth abscess in a healthy tooth and that the tooth should be extracted. He said it is unusual in cats and that they don't know the cause. He also suggested some antibiotics for a few days before the surgery to help with the infection. Just wondering if it is worth trying to save the tooth. Go through the course of antibiotics and see if he gets better. My vet made me feel like I was just being cheap and that conventional wisdom is to just remove the tooth.
Avatar m tn Two days ago I begun to get an overnight sharp pain in a different tooth. The pain was in the very last back tooth, which is two teeth down from the tooth with the odour mentioned above. Something small had just snapped off and slightly chipped this last back tooth and caused immediate pain when touched and I thought "dam" I expected merely just a small repair job a tiny pin head side minor filling.

Avatar f tn ones is from wisdom teeth extraction. It appears the longer you wait the higher the risk of nerves being intertwined with the tooth. Did the pain start shortly after the tooth extraction?
Avatar f tn To Emeral42: One of my cats had to spend 3 days/2 nights at the vet in 2007, with fluids, lab work and medication, and it cost us $700. To Jade59: $700 for a tooth cleaning, now I find that very expensive! We have a cat with gengivitis, adopted him in December and he had his tooth cleaning in January, it cost <$300. Tooth cleaning alone under anesthesia is $170 + $100 for blood work and IV during cleaning = $270. This price does not include extraction but I think it's # $40/tooth.
874521 tn?1424116797 Pulling a tiny tooth is not really that simple. The top three causes of tooth loss in cats is a carie or cavity also known as FORL (Feline Oral Resorptive Lesion). There becomes a PAINFUL (though pets don't show much pain - more as I go along) cavity in the mouth and the gum line gets red and irritated and the gum line gets infected. (More on gum issues and how it affects the rest of the body and why bloodwork is VERY beneficial.
Avatar f tn I have hypercementosis(mis spell) and had an extraction of number 4 tooth 6 weeks ago. I'm experience a lot of pain and the only thing that helps is my finger in place of the missing tooth. I've had two course of antibotics. The area has been checked twice and they thought I might need a root canal in tooth number 5. Specialist checked with no reaction to hot, cold and pressure so she prescribed oral rinse. I looked and the area is white but doctor said that it's healing.
152660 tn?1291755571 For Oliver they added an extraction because we knew one of his canines would have to come out. They scheduled them both to come in this morning. Ollie was first- the vet called to get permission to pull teeth and that type of stuff - he needed 5 teeth pulled, and 2 more needed something else done. They are also doing a biopsy of a growth in front of his lower canine. She didn't think it was cancer, but wanted to make sure. He will be on soft food from now on.
Avatar n tn Usually all blood thinners including aspirin are stopped at least three days before tooth extraction. In people more vulnerable to bleed, the drug is stopped at least a week before extraction. Post extraction, you can re-start the medication after 24 hours if there has been no bleeding. Sometimes you may need to wait for 2-3 days after which you are allowed to re-start aspirin. Please discuss this with your dentist. Take care!
1203066 tn?1265879976 I am not sure I am following your post. From what I read, the kitty was drinking more excessively prior to the tooth extraction (last year) and then the "excessive" drinking subsided. Is the excessive water consumption happening again now? What about her urination? How often is she using the litter box? What kind of food are you feeding her? Some diets actually encourage a cat to drink more water. Was any sort of bloodwork done prior to her surgery?
1809287 tn?1316744936 about a week ago i had a tooth extraction done on my very back molar on my lower right side. the extraction went pretty well, although quite uncomfortable. afterwards, i felt somewhat okay, but about two to three days after i started to feel this uncomfortable pain in my lower jaw bone. the pain is felt in my jaw, my throat, my temple, my neck and my ear. i am having constant headaches.
Avatar n tn The tooth was very difficult to extract and the dentist had to focibly rock the tooth back and forth to get it loose enough to remove. The tooth came out fully in tact. However, I now have a very painful, sharp bony protrusion on the outside of the gum area of the extraction. Is this some kind of broken or crushed socket?

Avatar n tn infected teeth are very difficult to numb. usually a course of antibiotics before the extraction works well. have the tooth checked it might just be a case of needing the root canal redone and an extraction is not necessary.

Avatar f tn A recent dental checkup revealed a hole in my upper left wisdom tooth. I am waiting for extraction. I am having lots of symptoms which my GP diagnosed as TMJ but which are probably down to this tooth. I have now developed a very sensitive scalp (on both sides of my head) and wondered if the tooth could be causing that too?
Avatar m tn HI, A gap remains in the gums after tooth extraction. This can be stitched with sutures or it can also heal on its own. The only thing you need to be careful about is that there should be no infection. You can ask your dentist to have a look. Hope this helps. The answer is based on information provided. Exact advice is not possible without a proper examination and investigations. You are requested to consult your Doctor. Take care and keep us posted.
